A confirmatory factor analysis of the Impact of Event Scale using a sample of World War II and Korean War veterans.

This study assessed the factor structure of the Impact of Event Scale (IES), a measure of intrusion and avoidance, using a sample of World War II and Korean War veterans who had experienced combat 40-50 years earlier. A series of 3 confirmatory factor analytic models were specified and estimated using LISREL 8.3. Model 1 specified a 1-factor model. Model 2 specified a correlated 2-factor model. Model 3 specified a 2-factor model with additional cross-factor loadings for Items 2 and 12. Model 3 was found to fit the data. In addition, this model was found to be a better explanation of the data t…

Trauma-induced dissociative amnesia in World War I combat soldiers. II. Treatment dimensions.

OBJECTIVE: This is the second part of a study of posttraumatic amnesia in World War I (WW I) soldiers. It moves beyond diagnostic validation of posttraumatic amnesia (PTA), to examine treatment findings, and relates these to contemporary treatment of dissociative amnesia, including treatment of victims of civilian trauma (e.g. childhood sexual abuse). METHOD: Key WW I studies are surveyed which focus on the treatment of PTA and traumatic memories. The dissociation-integration and repression-abreaction models are contrasted. RESULTS: Descriptive evidence is cited in support of preferring Myer

Learning from History: Applying World War II Palliative Care Lessons to Future Conflicts.

Because of the volume of casualties projected in future large-scale combat operations (LSCO), military nurses need to be prepared to perform palliative care and end-of-life care due to the projected lack of air superiority and resources required to rapidly evacuate patients. Much of the mental trauma experienced by military nurses who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom was because they felt unprepared and that they couldn't do enough. The lessons learned from WWII related to combat palliative care can inform the future needs of military nurses in preparation f

[Developing indices for caloric restriction related to World War II--a pilot study].

BACKGROUND: The vast numbers of studies regarding caloric restriction (CR) and breast cancer risk are based on war-related extreme situations. Studying the impact of CR in Jews during World War II (WW II) is challenging due to its variance and duration. OBJECTIVE: To develop novel research tools in order to assess CR exposure in Jews that occurred more than 60 years ago during WW II. METHODS: A pilot study based on Israeli women born in Europe in 1926-45, who lived there during WWII. Primary incident breast cancer patients and population-based controls were interviewed using a detailed quest…

[Mortality of psychiatric inpatients in France during World War II: a demographic study].

INTRODUCTION: In France, World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945. Under-nourishment was a national problem, and was more severe in mental hospitals. The mortality of psychiatric inpatients in France during World War II has long been a controversial issue in the country. LITERATURE FINDINGS: Some authors wrote of the "soft extermination" of 40 000 mental patients, although this has been proven false. The historical study published in 2007 by Isabelle von Bueltzingsloewen provides in-depth description and analysis of starvation due to food restrictions in French mental hospitals. Although the Fre…

Consequences of captivity: health effects of far East imprisonment in World War II.

Though medical consequences of war attract attention, the health consequences of the prisoner-of-war (POW) experience are poorly researched and appreciated. The imprisonment of Allied military personnel by the Japanese during the World War II provides an especially dramatic POW scenario in terms of deprivation, malnutrition and exposure to tropical diseases. Though predominantly British, these POWs also included troops from Australia, Holland and North America. Imprisonment took place in various locations in Southeast Asia and the Far East for a 3.5-year period between 1942 and 1945. Nutrition…

Neurosurgery during the Greco-Italian War (World War II): the management of war-related head injuries at the Italian field hospital of Sinanaj in Albania.

During the Greco-Italian War (World War II [WWII], 1940-1941), an Italian field hospital was set up in Sinanaj, Albania. The hospital's military surgeons carefully collected information about the characteristics and management of patients with war-related injuries. In 1942, they published a detailed report, with a section dedicated to the management of war-related head injuries. The aim of this report is to analyze that section, to describe the characteristics and neurosurgical management of war-related head injuries, and to depict the status of war neurosurgery in the Royal Italian Army durin…

Beyond the burn: Studies on the physiological effects of flamethrowers during World War II.

Flamethrowers are widely considered one of warfare's most controversial weapons and are capable of inflicting gruesome physical injuries and intense psychological trauma. Despite being the last of the major combatants in World War II (WWII) to develop them, the United States military quickly became the most frequent and adept operator of portable flamethrowers. This gave the U.S. military ample opportunity to observe the effects of flamethrowers on enemy soldiers. However, while most people in modern times would consider immolation by flamethrower to be an unnecessarily painful and inhumane wa…

Half a Man: The Symbolism and Science of Paraplegic Impotence in World War II America.

At the conclusion of the Second World War, more than 600,000 men returned to the United States with long-term disabilities, profoundly destabilizing the definitions, representations, and experiences of male sexuality in America. By examining an oft-neglected 1950 film, The Men, along with medical, personal, and popular accounts of impotence in paralyzed World War II veterans, this essay excavates the contours of that change and its attendant anxieties. While previous scholarship on film and sexuality in the postwar period has focused on women's experiences, we broaden the analytical lens to pr…
