Coping with epilepsy in Zimbabwe and the Midwest, USA.

In this article, the experiences of persons with epilepsy were explored in terms of coping with providing a basis of discussion and training to support groups, particularly in Zimbabwe. Coping mechanisms lay stress upon the individual's control in mastering the disease. It was assumed that a systematic research effort of intra-cultural and cross-cultural sharing of experiences could enhance discussion and training in the support groups. Coping with epilepsy was explored with 37 adults (27 from Zimbabwe and 10 from the Midwest, USA) using open-ended questions in a written questionnaire. Questio…

Surveillance for equity in maternal care in Zimbabwe.

The great hope and promise of post-independence efforts to promote equitable health care in Zimbabwe started with three years of dramatic improvement. Commitment to correcting inequities which were as discriminatory as any country in the world produced rapid extension of health centre infrastructure and the improvement of district hospitals. The major constraint was the entrenched pattern of sophisticated, high-technology health care left by colonial administrators which continued to monopolize resources. In spite of the excellent beginning, development of services for the poor was thwarted by…

The pattern of haematological and lymphoreticular malignancy in Zimbabwe.

A 3-year prospective study undertaken in Harare, Zimbabwe, revealed that the relative frequencies of lymphoreticular and haematological malignancies were similar to those of Western countries, and fitted well into the African pattern except that Hodgkin's disease was relatively less and myeloma relatively more frequent. The distribution of non-Hodgkin's and Hodgkin's lymphoma in Zimbabwe corresponds well with the overall trend in Africa, i.e. with the proportion of Hodgkin's disease increasing and that of non-Hodgkin's disease (particularly Burkitt's lymphoma) decreasing on moving away from th…

Missile injuries of the abdomen in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia.

One hundred and thirteen patients with missile injuries of the abdomen were seen over a 3-year period at one hospital in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. The details of these injuries and the results of their treatment are presented. Twenty-four patients died (21 per cent). Twenty of these patients had sustained high velocity missile injuries, 18 had damaged colons and 3 died from major vascular injuries before surgery. Excluding these last 3 patients, the mortality rate for high velocity wounds of the colon was 52 per cent and that for all other patients was 6 per cent (P less than 0.01). More than half th…

Molecular characterization of Brucella species from Zimbabwe.

Brucella abortus and B. melitensis have been reported in several studies in animals in Zimbabwe but the extent of the disease remains poorly known. Thus, characterizing the circulating strains is a critical first step in understanding brucellosis in the country. In this study we used an array of molecular assays including AMOS-PCR, Bruce-ladder, multiple locus variable number tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) and single nucleotide polymorphisms from whole genome sequencing (WGS-SNP) to characterize Brucella isolates to the species, biovar, and individual strain level. Sixteen Brucella strains iso…

Community Based Antiretroviral Treatment in Rural Zimbabwe.

Treatment of HIV has reduced HIV/AIDS-related mortality. Sustaining >90% virologic suppression in sub-Saharan Africa requires decentralized care and prevention services to rural communities. In Zimbabwe, the number of people receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) has increased rapidly. However, access to treatment monitoring tools such as viral load and drug resistance testing is limited. We assessed virologic treatment outcomes among ART recipients in Nyamutora, a rural community receiving bimonthly ART and prevention services. We enrolled all ART recipients (143) at 6-monthly visits in the…

Cancer survival in Harare, Zimbabwe, 1993-1997.

The Zimbabwe national cancer registry was established in 1985 as a population-based cancer registry covering Harare city. Cancer is not a notifiable disease, and registration of cases is done by active methods. The registry contributed data on randomly drawn sub-samples of Harare resident cases among 17 common cancer sites or types registered during 1993-1997 from black and white populations. Follow-up was carried out predominantly by active methods with median follow-up ranging from 1-54 months for different cancers. The proportion with histologically verified diagnosis for various cancers ra…

Oculocutaneous albinism among schoolchildren in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The term oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) covers a range of autosomal recessive genetic conditions involving hypopigmentation of the skin, hair, and eyes. In southern African black ethnic groups the tyrosinase positive form, OCA2, is predominant, with few cases of tyrosinase negative OCA1. The prevalence of OCA2 in schoolchildren in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, was found to be 1 in 2833. The gene frequency for OCA2 was 0.0188, with a carrier frequency of 1 in 27. Most of the pupils with albinism belong to the majority Shona ethnic group. As consanguineous marriages are discouraged in the…

The burden and risk factors of NCDs in Zimbabwe: evidence from the Zimbabwe population based HIV impact assessment 2020 survey.

BACKGROUND: The burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has emerged as a critical public health challenge in Zimbabwe, exacerbated by a complex interplay of socioeconomic factors, demographic shifts, and urbanization. This study leverages data from the Zimbabwe Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (ZIMPHIA) 2020 survey to provide further insights and understanding of the prevalence and risk factors associated with NCDs in the country. METHODS: Utilizing a two-stage, stratified cluster sample design, we analyzed data from 19,535 participants. We conducted univariate and multivariate logis…

Stemming cholera tides in Zimbabwe through mass vaccination.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, Zimbabwe declared another major cholera outbreak a decade after recording one of the worst cholera outbreaks in Africa. METHODS: A mathematical model for cholera was used to estimate the magnitude of the cholera outbreak and vaccination coverage using cholera cases reported data. A Markov chain Monte Carlo method based on a Bayesian framework was used to fit the model in order to estimate the basic reproductive number and required vaccination coverage for cholera control. RESULTS: The results showed that the outbreak had a basic reproductive number of 1.82 (95% credible …

HIV-1 infection and perinatal mortality in Zimbabwe.

As part of a survey of the causes of perinatal mortality at Mpilo Maternity Hospital, 220 neonatal deaths and the mothers of 221 stillbirths were tested for HIV-1 antibodies. The HIV positive rate in neonatal deaths was 23.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 18.0 to 29.2%), significantly higher than 15.4% (95% CI 10.6 to 20.1%) in stillbirths. Perinatal deaths from congenital malformations, birth asphyxia, pregnancy induced hypertension, placental abruption, and oFther non-infectious causes had similar low HIV positive rates averaging 8.1% (95% CI 3.9 to 12.3%). Deaths from septicaemia had a sign

The two-toed Wadoma--familial ectrodactyly in Zimbabwe.

Ectrodactyly has been referred to as being present among the Wadoma people of Zimbabwe for many years and has given rise in popular imagination to the legend of 'the two-toed people'. An investigation into this situation is reported in which three members of one Wadoma family are described. Reference is made to reports of a similar condition occurring in a group of people who may be ethnically related to the Wadoma living on either side of the Botswana/Zimbabwe border, who have not, as far as is known, been scientifically assessed.
