Zinc and Wound Healing: A Review of Zinc Physiology and Clinical Applications.

Our understanding of the role of zinc in normal human physiology is constantly expanding, yet there are major gaps in our knowledge with regard to the function of zinc in wound healing. This review aims to provide the clinician with sufficient understanding of zinc biology and an up-to-date perspective on the role of zinc in wound healing. Zinc is an essential ion that is crucial for maintenance of normal physiology, and zinc deficiency has many manifestations ranging from delayed wound healing to immune dysfunction and impairment of multiple sensory systems. While consensus has been reached r…

Reduction of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol with zero-valent zinc and catalyzed zinc.

Reductive dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) was conducted with Zn and Zn bimetals, Pd/Zn, Ni/Zn, Cu/Zn, Pt/Zn. Zn showed relatively low reaction rate toward 2,4,6-TCP, while Pd/Zn had dramatically increased reactivity and other bimetals had higher reaction rates than that of plain zinc. Phenol and less chlorinated phenols were found as dechlorination products. Pd/Zn produced cyclohexanone which is a product of aromatic ring reduced. Surface area normalized kinetic constants and second metal contents normalized kinetic constants were calculated and compared. Two mechanisms, ma…

Effects of a zinc-deficient diet on tissue zinc concentrations in rabbits.

Young male New Zealand White rabbits given a diet containing 2 ppm of Zn (Zn-deficient diet) ceased to grow after 5 wk. Control rabbits give … fed the low- and Zn-deficient diets, but this response depended on the particular tissue and diet. Zinc levels in bone decreased by approximately 45% and in fur by 20 to 30% on either low-Zn or Zn-deficient treatments. With a Zn-deficient diet, Zn in liver and testes decreased by 20%, Zn in skin by 35%, and Zn in brain by 10%. The Zn concentration in …

Adjusting zinc deposition behaviors by a modified separator to acquire zinc anodes for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries.

Aqueous rechargeable zinc ion batteries (ARZIBs) are ideal for massive and longstanding energy storage applications because of their excellent security and low operation cost. Nevertheless, ARZIBs are subject to the severe corrosion reaction of zinc metal anodes that is derived from the thermodynamic unsteadiness of the zinc anodes in aqueous solution, as well as zinc dendrite growth originating from uncontrolled zinc deposition. Herein, we created a separator by coating a thin piece of polypropylene (PP) with a compound consisting of zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate [Zn(OTf)2] and poly(vinylide…

Human zinc deficiency.

The objective of this paper is to provide a current overview of the significance of zinc in human nutrition. To achieve this, the following issues are addressed: (1) the biochemistry and biology of zinc in the context of their relevance to zinc in human nutrition and to our understanding of the complexity and practical importance of human zinc deficiency; (2) the history of our understanding of human zinc deficiency with an emphasis both on its brevity and on notable recent progress; (3) the clinical spectrum of severe zinc deficiency; (4) the lack of ideal biomarkers for milder zinc deficienc…

Comparison of the Oral Absorption, Distribution, Excretion, and Bioavailability of Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Gluconate, and Zinc-Enriched Yeast in Rats.

SCOPE: The oral absorption, distribution, excretion, and bioavailability of zinc sulfate (ZnS), zinc gluconate (ZnG), and zinc-enriched yeast (ZnY) in rats are fully and systemically compared for the first time. METHODS AND RESULTS: After zinc compounds were orally administered to rats at a single dose of 4 mg Zn kg-1 , blood, tissues, urine, and feces at different time points were collected for the quantification of zinc concentration. Blood was also harvested for the zinc assay in the multiple-dose administration. Plasma zinc levels among three zinc compounds showed no difference, and zinc …

Zinc homeostasis and zinc signaling in white matter development and injury.

Zinc is an essential dietary micronutrient that is abundant in the brain with diverse roles in development, injury, and neurological diseases. With new imaging tools and chelators selectively targeting zinc, the field of zinc biology is rapidly expanding. The importance of zinc homeostasis is now well recognized in neurodegeneration, but there is emerging data that zinc may be equally important in white matter disorders. This review provides an overview of zinc biology, including a discussion of clinical disorders of zinc deficiency, different zinc pools, zinc biomarkers, and methods for measu…

The Role of the Slc39a Family of Zinc Transporters in Zinc Homeostasis in Skin.

The first manifestations that appear under zinc deficiency are skin defects such as dermatitis, alopecia, acne, eczema, dry, and scaling skin. Several genetic disorders including acrodermatitis enteropathica (also known as Danbolt-Closs syndrome) and Brandt's syndrome are highly related to zinc deficiency. However, the zinc-related molecular mechanisms underlying normal skin development and homeostasis, as well as the mechanism by which disturbed zinc homeostasis causes such skin disorders, are unknown. Recent genomic approaches have revealed the physiological importance of zinc transporters i…

Kinetics of zinc status and zinc deficiency in Berardinelli-Seip syndrome.

Berardinelli-Seip syndrome (BSS) is a very rare disorder characterized by near-complete absence of adipose tissue from birth or early infancy, hypoleptinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and other clinical signals. It is caused by mutations in AGPAT2 or Gng3lg. We evaluated 10 BSS patients and 10 healthy subjects. A single dose of 382.43 μmol zinc was administered intravenously before and after 3 months of oral zinc supplementation. Blood samples were collected from the contralateral arm at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min after zinc injection. Plasma and serum were …

Zinc ions in the endocrine and exocrine pancreas of zinc deficient rats.

OBJECTIVE: Zinc deficiency is a problem world-wide. Zinc and insulin are intimately related, and a reduced zinc intake may affect glucose metabolism. The present study investigates how subclinical zinc deficiency in rats affects glucose metabolism and zinc distribution in the pancreas. METHODS: Glucose metabolism was evaluated by blood-glucose, serum insulin, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests. Immersion zinc-sulphide autometallography (iZnSAMG) was used to describe zinc ion distribution. RESULTS: After 4 weeks on a zinc deficient diet (<10 ppm),…

Inhibition of rat methylbenzylnitrosamine metabolism by dietary zinc and zinc in vitro.

Methylbenzylnitrosamine is an esophageal-specific carcinogen in the rat, and the incidence of methylbenzylnitrosamine-induced esophageal carcinoma is increased by dietary zinc deficiency. Methylbenzylnitrosamine requires activation by cytochrome P-450 to be mutagenic; the present study examined the role of dietary zinc deficiency and the in vitro addition of zinc on the cytochrome P-450-dependent microsomal metabolism of methylbenzylnitrosamine. Dietary zinc deficiency significantly increased the cytochrome P-450-dependent esophageal and hepatic microsomal metabolism of methylbenzylnitrosamine…
