Mercury bioaccumulation in zooplankton and its relationship with eutrophication in the waters in the karst region of Guizhou Province, Southwest China.

Zooplankton play an important role in the transfer of mercury (Hg) from the lower to upper trophic positions in the food chain. In this study, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) levels were measured in three size fractions of zooplankton collected from three reservoirs (Hongfeng, Baihua, and Aha Reservoir) and one wetland in karst areas to understand mercury accumulation in zooplankton from alkaline environments. The results showed that the alkaline waters had lower zooplankton MeHg levels (0.1 to 66.8 ng g-1) than most of the acidic waters reported. However, the zooplankton THg leve…

Polarization sensitivity as a contrast enhancer in pelagic predators: lessons from in situ polarization imaging of transparent zooplankton.

Because light in the pelagic environment is partially polarized, it has been suggested that the polarization sensitivity found in certain pelagic species may serve to enhance the contrast of their transparent zooplankton prey. We examined its potential during cruises in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean and at a field station on the Great Barrier Reef. First, we collected various species of transparent zooplankton and micronekton and photographed them between crossed polarizers. Many groups, particularly the cephalopods, pelagic snails, salps and ctenophores, were found to have ciliary, mu…

Gut Microbiomes of Marine Zooplankton: Consequences for Host Performance, the Biological Carbon Pump, and Prokaryote Biogeography.

Marine zooplankton are a link between primary producers and higher trophic levels and play a pivotal role in organic matter export via diel vertical migration and faecal-pellet production. Molecular surveys have revealed each individual as a holobiont hosting dense, taxonomically structured microbiomes in the gut, on the cuticle, and within feeding structures. These microbial partners expand dietary breadth through carbohydrate-active enzymes, supply limiting vitamins, detoxify xenobiotics, and may buffer thermal and oxidative stress, thereby influencing host fitness and the fate of particulat…

Community-level eDNA decay patterns in marine zooplankton: Implications for optimizing eDNA-based marine environmental monitoring.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has the potential to greatly transform marine ecological monitoring, yet its capacity for accurate biodiversity estimates is constrained by its decay process. Previous research has largely focused on laboratory-cultured single species, and thus the dynamics of mixed-species eDNA from natural communities remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a 10-day time-series experiment to track the community-level eDNA decay process following the complete removal of zooplankton, employing an integrated approach of morphological analysis, quantitative PCR (qPCR), metabarcoding…

Mercury and methylmercury uptake and trophic transfer from marine diatoms to copepods and field collected zooplankton.

Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (CH3Hg) are found at trace levels in most marine waters. These species, particularly CH3Hg, then ominously bioaccumulate through marine food chains eventually reaching potentially harmful levels in top oceanic wildlife. Accordingly, it is important to measure and evaluate uptake at environmentally relevant concentrations where trophic transfer initiates; during uptake in primary producers, and consumption by plankton grazers. Experiments using cultured copepods (Acartia tonsa) and field zooplankton assemblages were performed with two different sized diatom specie…

Trophic transfer of cyanobacterial toxins from zooplankton to planktivores: consequences for pike larvae and mysid shrimps.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potentially harmful effects of zooplankton preexposed to cyanobacteria on two planktivorous animals: a fish larva (pike, Esox lucius) and a mysid shrimp (Neomysis integer). The planktivores were fed zooplankton from a natural community that had been preexposed to cell-free extract or to purified toxin (nodularin) of the cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena, and the growth, feeding, and pellet production of the planktivores, as well as the toxin content of the pellets, were measured. In addition, radiolabeled nodularin ((3)H-dihydronodularin) was used in …

Computer Vision-Assisted Semiautomatic Analysis of Zooplankton in a Longitudinal Study of the Ecological State of Lake Baikal.

Studying zooplankton in freshwater ecosystems is crucial for ecological research, providing insight into ecosystem health, biodiversity, and water quality. This study focuses on developing a hybrid approach for studying and analyzing zooplankton communities using machine learning and human expert analysis. The goal of the study was to automate the labor-intensive process of zooplankton analysis as part of a long-term Lake Baikal monitoring program (since 1945), while maintaining continuity with traditional methods. A software and algorithmic system were developed to automate the analysis: imag…

Application of machine learning models for zooplankton abundance prediction in ponds of Southeastern Coastal Regions in Bangladesh.

Zooplankton abundance prediction in surface water bodies is crucial because they reflect ecosystem health and have role in aquatic food webs and nutrient cycling. This study examined the applicability of machine learning algorithms to estimate zooplankton abundance in ponds using water quality parameters. Data on zooplankton abundance and water quality parameters were collected monthly. Multiple linear regression (MLR), support vector regression (SVR), random forest regression (RFR), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB), were used to observe the relation between zo…

Impacts of autochthonous dissolved organic matter on the accumulation of methylmercury by phytoplankton and zooplankton in a eutrophic coastal ecosystem.

The bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) within the pelagic food webs is a crucial determinant of the MeHg concentration in the organisms … her level of autochthonous DOM in the water may result in more significant MeHg biomagnification in zooplankton. This can be explained by alterations in the structure of pelagic food webs and/or an increase in the direct consumption of DOM and particulate organic matter (POM) containing MeHg. Our study offers direct field monitoring evidence of dual roles pla …

Effects of chemical preservation on bulk and amino acid isotope ratios of zooplankton, fish, and squid tissues.

RATIONALE: It is imperative to understand how chemical preservation alters tissue isotopic compositions before using historical samples in ecological studies. Specifically, although compound-specific isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) is becoming a widely used tool, there is little information on how preservation techniques affect amino acid δ15 N values. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of chemical preservatives on bulk tissue δ13 C and δ15 N and amino acid δ15 N values, measured by gas chromatography/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/IRMS), of (a) tuna (Thunnus albacares) and squi

Monitoring of genotoxicity in marine zooplankton induced by toxic metals in Ennore estuary, Southeast coast of India.

The present study provides preliminary in-situ data on genetic integrity of marine zooplankton. Paracalanus parvus, Oithona rigida and Euterpina acutifrons were collected during four different seasons (summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon) from 2011 to 2012 in Ennore and Kovalum estuaries. DNA damage levels in different zooplankton were analyzed by comet assay and were correlated with different environmental stressors. Spatial and temporal variations in DNA damage was observed in all the species. Zooplankton from Ennore estuary showed significantly lower genetic integrity. Particulate…

The effect of ocean alkalinity enhancement on zooplankton standing stock and community composition in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: a mesocosm study.

Ocean acidification (OA) due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions has significantly altered ocean chemistry since the industrial era. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is an innovative strategy to mitigate excess CO2, with ocean liming (OL) serving as a potential carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method, through the spreading of Ca(OH)2 (slaked lime) at the ocean surface. This study examined the ecological effects of OL on a natural zooplankton community from the ultraoligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean Sea during a 14-day mesocosm experiment conducted in spring-summer. We investigated how varying concen…

Illuminating the planktonic stages of salmon lice: A unique fluorescence signal for rapid identification of a rare copepod in zooplankton assemblages.

Monitoring of planktonic salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis salmonis) abundance and parameterization of key life-history traits has been hindered by labour-intensive and error-prone quantification using traditional light microscopy. Fluorescence illumination has been proposed as a means of improving visualization, but prior to this study adequate investigation of the relevant fluorescence profiles and measurement conditions has not been undertaken. We investigated the fluorescence profiles of L. salmonis and non-target copepod spp. with excitation and emission matrices (200-600 nm) and iden

Decadal changes in zooplankton abundance and phenology of Long Island Sound reflect interacting changes in temperature and community composition.

Between 1939 and 1982, several surveys indicated that zooplankton in Long Island Sound, NY (LIS) appeared to follow an annual cycle typical of the Mid-Atlantic coast of North America. Abundance peaked in both early spring and late summer and the peaks were similar in magnitude. In recent decades, this cycle appeared to have shifted. Only one large peak tended to occur, and summer copepod abundance was consistently reduced by ∼60% from 1939 to 1982 levels. In other Mid-Atlantic coastal systems such a dramatic shift has been attributed to the earlier appearance of ctenophores, particularly Mnemi…

The relationship between zooplankton vertical distribution and the concentration of aqueous Hg in boreal lakes: A comparative field study.

The production of the highly toxic monomethylmercury (MeHg) is heterogenous throughout the water column. Multiple factors have been identified to significantly affect this process, such as an extended anoxic water layer and a deep-water phytoplankton maximum. However, the role of water column heterogeneity on mercury (Hg) cycling is still poorly known, especially concerning the role of zooplankton grazers. Here, four boreal lakes with contrasting characteristics were sampled (i.e., transparency and the presence/absence of fish) at both day and night in order to maximize the heterogeneity in zo…

PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs in zooplankton in the Baltic Sea - spatial and temporal shifts in the congener-specific concentrations.

In the marine food-webs, zooplankton is a key element in the transfer of persistent organic pollutants to higher trophic levels. We determined the congener-specific concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in offshore zooplankton (size from 0.2 to 20mm) collected in 2001, 2002 and 2010 in the northern and central Baltic Sea. Of the PCDD/Fs, the concentrations of 2378-TCDF were from 18 to 47 and of 23478-PeCDF from 7.9 to 29 pg g(-1)fat and showed little tempora…

Refining Zooplankton Diet Composition Studies Over Short and Long Time Scales by Combining 18S Metabarcoding With Fatty Acid Analyses.

Understanding diet composition is essential for unravelling trophic interactions in aquatic ecosystems. DNA metabarcoding, utilising various variable regions of the 18S rRNA gene, is increasingly employed to investigate zooplankton diet composition. However, accurate results depend on rapid inactivation of digestive enzymes and DNA nucleases through proper sample processing and preservation. In this study, we compare the prey communities of Antarctic krill retrieved from the 18S variable regions V4 and V7 and assess how different processing treatments affect the detected prey composition of bo…

Transfer of antibiotic resistance genes between Enterococcus faecalis strains in filter feeding zooplankton Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulex.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria from faecal pollution sources are pervasive in aquatic environments. A facilitating role for the emergence of waterborne, multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens has been attributed to biofiltration but had not yet been substantiated. This study investigated the effect of filtration and gut passage in Daphnia spp. on conjugal transfer of resistance genes in Enterococcus faecalis. In vivo conjugation experiments involved a vancomycin-resistant donor strain bearing a plasmid-borne vanA resistance gene, and two vancomycin-susceptible and rifampicin-resistant recipie

Biochemical and toxicological effects of organic (herbicide Primextra(®) Gold TZ) and inorganic (copper) compounds on zooplankton and phytoplankton species.

In Europe, mainly in the Mediterranean region, an intensive usage of pesticides was recorded during the past 30 years. According to information from agricultural cooperatives of the Mondego valley (Figueira da Foz, Portugal), Primextra(®) Gold TZ is the most used herbicide in corn crop fields and one of the 20 best-selling herbicides in Portugal. Copper is mainly used in pesticide formulations. This study aims to determine the ecotoxicological and biochemical (namely fatty acid profiles) effects of the herbicide Primextra(®) Gold TZ and the metal copper on marine plankton. The organisms used i

Depth-stratified zooplankton diversity in the central Indian Ocean Basin: An integrative pre-mining survey using morphology and DNA metabarcoding.

Zooplankton play a crucial role in marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles, and their rapid responses to environmental changes make them effective indicators of ecosystem health. However, limited data on zooplankton diversity within the polymetallic nodule (PMN) contract area of the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) restrict the reference information available for future monitoring. Mesozooplankton communities were characterised through morphological identification and 18S rRNA metabarcoding. Samples were obtained using a depth-stratified Multilayer Plankton Net (MPN; 0-5000 m) and mesopela…
