High-pressure EPR spectroscopy indicates that cholesterol forms aggregates in supercritical carbon dioxide. In pure carbon dioxide, changes in cholesterol aggregate size or packing structure are observed with changing pressure. The racemic alcohols 3-chloro-1-(2-thienyl)-1-propanol, 3-chloro-1-phenylpropanol, and 1-chloro-3-(3,4-difluorophenoxy)-2-propanol were converted into a mixture of one enantiomer as butanoate and the other as alcohol by lipase catalysis. Subsequent Mitsunobu esterification without separation proceeded with inversion of the unreacted alcohols to give high yield and ee of the three enantiopure butanoates. The butanoates of opposite configuration were produced in a similar manner, but starting with lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of the racemic butanoates.

The behaviour of 2-phenyl-1-propanol (I) and 2-phenyl-2-propanol (II) and their glucuronides with HCl has been investigated. While I shows a high acidic constancy, II undergoes a partial conversion into 2-phenylpropane (III) which itself yields numerous products. The glucosidic bond of glucuronide I is quantitatively split by 10.0% HCl, whereby an aglucone yield of nearly 100% is obtained. The second glucuronide behaves otherwise: the recovery of II is very low (only 40% to 45%) with HCl concentrations of 1.0%-20.0%, although with 1.0% HCl 100% of the glucuronide is hydrolysed.

The crystal structures of brucine (2,3-dimethoxystrychnidin-10-one), C(23)H(26)N(2)O(4), brucine acetone solvate, C(23)H(26)N(2)O(4).C(3)H(6)O, and brucine 2-propanol solvate dihydrate, C(23)H(26)N(2)O(4).C(3)H(7)O.2H(2)O, have been determined. Crystals of brucine and its 2-propanol solvate dihydrate exhibit similar monolayer sheet packing, whereas crystals of the acetone solvate adopt a different mode of packing, as brucine pillars. The solvent appears to control the brucine self-assembly on the basis of common donor-acceptor properties of the surfaces.

The concentration of acetone dissolved in liver perfusion medium was determined by injection of the sample into a gas chromatograph equipped with a Carbopack/Carbowax-packed glass column.
