Effects of Immunoadsorption on Markers of Iron Metabolism: A Case Series.

Immunoadsorption selectively eliminates circulating antibodies in antibody-mediated diseases. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia; however, the potential role of immunoadsorption in contributing to iron depletion remains insufficiently established. This study quantified levels of eluted iron, ferritin, and transferrin in the regeneration solutions of peptide ligand adsorbers from 13 patients and in ABO antigen-specific non-regenerative adsorbers from five patients. Markers of anemia and iron status were assessed at baseline and monitored for up to 2 weeks. Analysis of regenerati

Establishing "Glycoantigens" as a cross-field concept in Glycobiology, transfusion, transplant, and immunology.

Cell-surface glycans (carbohydrate structures) serve as critical antigens in transfusion and transplantation, yet their study remains fragmented across disciplines. The ABO blood group system, the most clinically tested glycan compatibility system, is still assessed using the same broad phenotypic classifications (A, B, AB, O) established over 125 years ago, which fail to capture the underlying structural diversity of glycans or account for tissue-specific expression patterns. Beyond ABO, numerous other glycoantigens remain almost entirely neglected in clinical compatibility testing, despite t

Effect of clinical application of anti-CD38 and anti-CD47 monoclonal antibodies on blood group detection and transfusion therapy and treatment.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effect of anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) (daratumumab, DARA) and anti-CD47 mAb combined with azacytidine on blood transfusion compatibility tests, transfusion effects in the treatment of multiple myeloma or acute myeloid leukemia and the corresponding management strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among the 19 patients who were treated with DARA and anti-CD47 mAb, 4 patients with cross matching incompatibility were selected. The ABO blood group, the Rh blood group, irregular antibody screening and direct antiglobulin test (DAT) and cross matching testing wer

Role of ABO blood system in COVID-19: Findings from a southern Italian study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a worldwide infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 and infects humans by binding to the ACE2 receptor. Blood group ABO glycoproteins can influence the binding of the virus to ACE2. The role of ABO blood system in the susceptibility to infection as well as in the clinical outcome of infected patients is still controversial and needs to be clarified. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 167 patients positive for SARS-CoV-2 who underwent nasopharyngeal swab, and of a control group represented by 891 subjects negative for SARS-CoV-2, to assess the association between ABO

ABO and Rho(D) blood groups in IMSS population in the State of Nuevo León (estimation of simple and double incompatibility frequency in married couples and their offspring).

ABO and Rho (D) blood groups were studied in 61,023 people receiving medical care at the medical units or blood banks of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in the metropolitan area in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, so as to determine the genetical inheritance patterns that control these blood antigens, and that were used in the stimation of ABO and Rho (D) incompatibility in married couples and in births with maternal fetal incompatibility. It was found that IMSS populations, regardless of the medical units, can be considered as part of the same one and are different to those observe

The combination of chest compression synchronized ventilation and aortic balloon occlusion improve the outcomes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in swine.

AIM: The primary mission of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is to provide adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery for restoring spontaneous circulation from cardiac arrest (CA) events. Previously, studies demonstrated that chest compression synchronized ventilation (CCSV) improved systemic oxygen supply during CPR, and aortic balloon occlusion (ABO) augments the efficacy of external CPR by increasing blood perfusion to vital organs. However, both them failed to make a significant improvement in return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). In this study, we investigated the effects of combined

Blood Diathesis in a Patient of Rare Blood Group 'Bombay Phenotype'.

Bombay blood group or Oh phenotype is a rare autosomal recessive phenotype within the ABO blood grouping system. It occurs due to a mutation in the H gene that produces H antigen on red blood cells (RBCs). Individuals with two mutant H genes lack H antigen on RBCs and have anti-H antibodies in serum. At the time of blood grouping, this blood group mimics O blood group but it shows incompatibility with O group blood during cross matching. Several studies have reported an association of decreased von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels in plasma with ABO blood groups. Here we report a case of a 19-ye

[Chances of reducing the formation of immune antibodies after massive transfusions in open heart surgery (author's transl)].

Children, young people and women at the age of possible maternity form the majority of patients operated by extracorporal circulation. A longterm planning of these operations should also have donor in call, who are compatible with the patients' Rh groups and Kell antigens. Having practiced such a selection of donors we succeeded in reducing the formation of immune antibodies. 6 out of 330 patients had antibodies, but 4 had been sensibilized before operation. In the case of the other 2 it would not be excluded that they might have been immunized a long time ago. We emphasize the importance of h

Regulation of ABO blood group antigen expression by miR-331-3p and miR-1908-5p during hematopoietic stem cell differentiation.

The ABO blood group system is the most important factor in clinical transfusion medicine and is implicated in a number of human diseases. ABO antigens are not confined to red blood cells (RBCs) and are widely expressed in a variety of human cells and tissues. To date, many alleles with variant ABO expression have been identified and in many cases traced to one of the >250 reported genetic variations in the respective glycosyltransferase. The role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the regulation of blood group antigens during erythropoiesis has not been addressed, however. Here, we show that miR-331-3p

Rh Blood Group Antigens and Alloimmunization Risk of Pregnant Women in South Western, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Rh blood group antigens are the second most important blood group antigens in clinical transfusion due to their immunogenicity and prevalence. Childbirth, miscarriage, and other obstetrics events are risk factors for alloimmunization in women which increases the likelihood of haemolytic blood transfusion reaction and hemolytic disease of the fetal/newborn (HDNF/B). Even though there are several data on the RhD status of our populations. However, there is a dearth of data on pregnant women's C, E, c, and e status, their alloimmunization risk, and rates in Nigeria. OBJECTIVES: This

Multiple dose IVIG treatment in neonatal immune hemolytic jaundice.

Isoimmune hemolytic jaundice due to ABO and Rh blood group incompatibility is an important problem in the neonatal period. Intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) treatment in isoimmune jaundice has been shown to be effective, but the response to treatment is variable. In this study, the effect of multiple doses IVIG therapy versus single dose MG therapy was investigated in 61 babies who had ABO and Rh hemolytic disease. Patients were divided into three groups. Group I received multiple dose IVIG treatment, group II received single dose MG treatment, and group III was not given any IVIG. All three

Erythrocyte autoantibodies, autoimmune haemolysis and pregnancy.

The clinical and serological records of 20 pregnant patients with erythrocyte autoantibodies were critically reviewed and analysed. This series, the largest reported, confirmed an association between erythrocyte autosensitization and pregnancy, and suggested that this occurred on an average of 1 in 50,000 pregnancies. The clinical presentation varied from severe haemolytic anaemia to serological abnormalities discovered during the routine testing of well patients; overt haemolysis was present in 7 cases. Treatment was only necessary in 3 patients where the haemolysis was severe. 3 infants were

ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (A2 to O). Qualitative and semiquantitative studies of the humoral immune response against different blood group A antigens.

The humoral immune response against blood group A antigens with different core saccharide structures has been investigated in four blood group O recipients transplanted with kidneys from two blood group A2 donors. Radioimmunoassay and thin-layer chromatogram binding assay studies showed that different individuals responded differently to the same antigenic stimulus. Antibodies were produced in the recipient that bound to the terminal trisaccharide of the blood group A antigens. In some cases antibodies that bound to a larger antigen epitope, including the fourth and fifth sugar in the polysacc

The sensitivity and specificity of the immediate-spin crossmatch.

The immediate-spin (IS) crossmatch is used to detect ABO incompatibility between donor red cells (RBCs) and the serum of the intended recipient. However, this test may be positive in the absence of ABO incompatibility (false positive) or it may be negative when ABO incompatibility exists (false negative). During a 25-month study, the rates of both false-positive and false-negative IS crossmatch results were evaluated, and the sensitivity and specificity of the IS crossmatch were determined. During the study period, 53,656 IS crossmatches were performed for patients without significant RBC anti

A novel allele of B(A) blood group detected in a donor and a patient during a retrospective review of ABO group anomalies in a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: ABO discrepancies, inconclusive results between forward and reverse typing, are one of the significant challenges encountered in transfusion medicine. Their frequency and etiologies can vary among ethnicities. This study aimed to characterize ABO discrepancies in a Thai population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 285,450 donor and 258,780 patient samples for ABO discrepancies, which were categorized into five groups, as described below. The serological ABO grouping was performed using an automated system, and further serological techniques were used in the discrepa

Preventing Mistransfusions: An Evaluation of Institutional Knowledge and a Response.

BACKGROUND: Blood product mistransfusions occur when a process error causes transfusion of incompatible blood products. These events are known sources of negative patient outcomes. One such event demonstrated an institutional knowledge gap and an opportunity to reduce this source of transfusion errors. The focus of this study was to evaluate the application of point of care cognitive aids to bridge potentially lethal knowledge gaps in blood product to patient compatibility. METHODS: A patient-donor ABO antigen compatibility grid for red blood cells (RBC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) was deve
