AIM: To understand associations among bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone area, and their association with fractures in adults with cerebral palsy (CP).
METHOD: This retrospective cohort study included 78 adults with CP with a hip dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) from 1st December 2012 to 3rd May 2021 performed at the University of Michigan. Data-driven logistic regression techniques identified which, if any, DXA-derived bone traits (e.g. age/sex/ethnicity-based z-scores) were associated with fracture risk by sex and severity of CP. BMC-area associations wer

UNLABELLED: Millions of CT scans are performed annually and could be also used to opportunistically assess musculoskeletal health; however, it is unknown how well this secondary assessment relates to osteoporotic fracture. This study demonstrates that opportunistic CT screening is a promising tool to predict individuals with previous osteoporotic fracture.
INTRODUCTION: Opportunistic computed tomography (oCT) screening for osteoporosis and fracture risk determination complements current dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) diagnosis. This study determined major osteoporotic fracture prediction by

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) have higher fracture rates and post-fracture mortality than the general population, but bone mineral density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is less predictive of fracture in this patient group. Bone biopsy and high-resolution imaging indicate that cortical thickness (CT) is reduced and cortical porosity is increased in ESKD. The aim of this study was to assess cortical parameters using DXA in patients with ESKD. It was hypothesized that these parameters would show deterioration and be associated with fracture.
METHODS: Using

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased incidence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia. However, the relationship between osteoporosis and sarcopenia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus remains to be unclear. Appendicular skeletal muscle was adjusted by height (appendicular skeletal muscle mass [ASM]/height2 ) as a marker of sarcopenia. This study aimed to explore the relationship between ASM/height2 , osteoporosis and bone mineral density (BMD) in this population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 192 women and 225 men with type 2 diabetes mellitus were re

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a frequent clinical condition, which affects nearly 1 in 3 women. Estrogen deficiency leads to rapid bone loss, which is maximal within the first years after the menopause transition and can be prevented by menopause hormone therapy (MHT). Assessment of the individual risk of osteoporosis is primarily based on the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) at the spine and femur by DXA. Clinical risk factors (CRFs) for fractures taken either alone or in combination in the FRAX score were shown not to reliably predict fractures and/or osteoporosis (as defined by a

BACKGROUND: Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) is the most important method to diagnose osteoporosis. However, current BMD measurement is always performed after a fracture has occurred.
PURPOSE: To explore whether a radiomic model based on abdominal computed tomography (CT) can predict the BMD of lumbar vertebrae.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 245 patients who underwent both dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and abdominal CT examination (training cohort, n = 196; validation cohort, n = 49) were included in our retrospective study. In total, 1218 image features were extracted f

A 10-year-old boy presented with continuous reports of pain located to the left knee. Imaging revealed a sclerotic process in the left distal femur, and biopsies were consistent with chondroblastic osteosarcoma. As part of standard treatment the patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by limb sparring surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. The entire tumour was excised and femoral bone reconstruction was performed with a double barrel free vascularised fibular graft. Bone mineral density (BMD) can be decreased in childhood survivors of cancer. The patient was followed for 7 years with

A bone biopsy is still considered the gold standard for diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy. It allows to measure both static and dynamic parameters of bone remodeling and is the only method able to evaluate mineralization and allows analysis of both cortical and trabecular bone. Although bone volume can be measured indirectly by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, mineralization defects, bone metal deposits, cellular number/activity, and even turnover abnormalities are difficult to determine by techniques other than qualitative bone histomorphometry. In this review, we evaluate the role of bone b

Dynamic resistance exercise (DRT) might be the most promising agent for fighting sarcopenia in older people. However, the positive effect of DRT on osteopenia/osteoporosis in men has still to be confirmed. To evaluate the effect of low-volume/high-intensity (HIT)-DRT on bone mineral density (BMD) and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) in men with osteosarcopenia, we initiated the Franconian Osteopenia and Sarcopenia Trial (FrOST). Forty-three sedentary community-dwelling older men (aged 73 to 91 years) with osteopenia/osteoporosis and SMI-based sarcopenia were randomly assigned to a HIT-RT exerc

High-impact exercise can improve femoral neck bone mass but findings in postmenopausal women have been inconsistent and there may be concern at the effects of high-impact exercise on joint health. We investigated the effects of a high-impact exercise intervention on bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and section modulus (Z) as well as imaging biomarkers of osteoarthritis (OA) in healthy postmenopausal women. Forty-two women aged 55 to 70 years who were at least 12 months postmenopausal were recruited. The 6-month intervention consisted of progressive, unilateral, high-impa

Bone responsiveness to serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) in pseudohypoparathyroidism 1B (PHP1B) is controversial. Forty-eight PHP1B patients diagnosed by molecular analysis were recruited from 2000 to 2016 from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Fifty-five sex-matched nonsurgical hypoparathyroidism (NS-HP) patients were selected and included for comparison. Basic information, laboratory test, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) results were collected. Linear regression was performed to identify independent predictors of lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck (FN), and total hip (TH) bone

The effect of caponization on the mechanical properties of Polbar chicken bones was the subject of investigation. The biomechanical strength of bones and the risk of their deformation or fracture were determined on the basis of their geometric, structural, material, and densitometric properties. Eight-week-old cockerels of Polbar breed were surgically castrated and then fattened until the 24th week of life. It was observed that caponization did not influence the weight and length of either of the long bones. It did however significantly reduce their ash content and the Ca and P contents in the

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a widespread metabolic bone disease representing a global public health problem currently affecting more than two hundred million people worldwide. The World Health Organization states that dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the best densitometric technique for assessing bone mineral density (BMD). DXA provides an accurate diagnosis of osteoporosis, a good estimation of fracture risk, and is a useful tool for monitoring patients undergoing treatment. Common mistakes in BMD testing can be divided into four principal categories: 1) indication errors, 2) lack of
