Amplitude modulated S-tones can be superior to noise for tinnitus reduction.

PURPOSE: Recent evidence has suggested that amplitude modulated tones might have some advantages over broadband noise. METHOD: Fifty-six subjects listened to S-Tones at a carrier frequency matched at the tinnitus pitch (amplitude modulation rate of 40 Hz) and to broadband noise. Subjects rated their tinnitus loudness before, during, and after a 120-s duration masker. RESULTS: The results suggested that S-Tones were generally more effective at reducing tinnitus loudness than noise. In about one third (21/56) of the subjects, there was no significant effect from any masker. In other subjects,

Loudness modulation after transient and permanent hearing loss: implications for tinnitus and hyperacusis.

Loudness is the primary perceptual correlate of sound intensity. The relationship between sound intensity and loudness is not fixed, and can be modified by short-term sound deprivation or stimulation. Deprivation increases sound sensitivity, whereas stimulation decreases it. We review the effects of short-term auditory deprivation and stimulation on the auditory central nervous system of humans and animals, and we extend the discussion to permanent auditory deprivation (hearing loss) and auditory pathologies of loudness perception. Although there is sufficient evidence to conclude that loudnes

DPOAE modifications induced by pure tone overstimulation in guinea pigs.

Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) shows a vulnerability to acoustic overstimulation that is easily detectable by changes in amplitude, frequency distribution and time course. The frequency-specific changes in DPOAE provide more information than the more general changes in click evoked otoacoustic emissions. In this work five anesthetized guinea pigs were examined for changes DPOAE after exposure to pure tones. The noise was a 110 dB SPL pure tones for 45 minutes and the fatiguing tone centered on the geometric mean (GM) of primaries or 2/3 of GM. The most measurable effects wer

Auditory frequency and intensity discrimination in pigmented rats.

Auditory function was investigated in seven pigmented hooded rats (strain Long-Evans) with the aid of an operant conditioning procedure. Frequency difference limen was measured at frequencies from 0.5 to 64 kHz at 50 dB sensation level (SL). Weber ratios (frequency difference limen/frequency) in this range varied between 3.7 and 7.3%. The decline in the intensity of the stimulus from 50 to 10 dB SL was accompanied by a slight increase in the frequency difference limen. The frequency difference limen values were similar for frequency shifts upwards or downwards. Intensity discrimination was mea

Ear canal volume and variability in the patterns of temporary threshold shifts.

Ear canal resonance is thought to be responsible for the prominent loss of hearing in the 3.0 to 6.0 kHz region caused by over-exposure to noise. Relationships were identified between frequency-of-maximum temporary threshold shift (TTS) and physical measurements of the ear canal in 56 subjects. TTSs were produced by two separate exposures to broadband noise of either 2 hr or 20 minute duration. Ear canal volume was estimated from admittance tympanograms, diameter of the canal opening was measured, and canal length was calculated. Thirty subjects suffered the greatest TTS at 4.0 kHz, while 17 a

Stimulus dominance in fused dichotic syllables: trouble for the category goodness hypothesis.

Repp [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 60, 456-469 (1976)] hypothesized that dichotic stimulus dominance relationships between fused speech sounds reflect the relative category goodness of the competing stimuli, i.e., their relative perceptual distances from the listener's linguistic category prototypes. In experiment I, 15 synthetic syllables from a /bae/-/dae/-/gae) continuum were dichotically fused with three selected stimuli from the same continuum and presented to listeners for identification. Stimuli in the vicinity of phonetic category boundaries were found to make weaker dichotic competitors than s

Decay and recovery of the acoustic stapedius reflex in humans.

The time course of decay and recovery of ipsilateral and contralateral stapedius reflex responses to 2 000 Hz pure tone stimulation was studied in 10 normal-hearing subjects. Reflex responses were found to follow a closely similar time course with respect to both decay and recovery in simultaneous bilateral recordings. The similarity is compatible with the assumption that decay and recovery originate in the afferent auditory system, and not in the muscles. Recovery was 50% complete 250 ms after the end of the stimulus and most subjects had reached their initial amplitude after 1-3 s. The indiv

Determination of hearing threshold for single frequencies from the acoustic reflex.

With preactivation, the threshold of stapedial reflex activity can be lowered by 20-30 dB. From these measures of the normal and reduced reflex threshold, an extrapolation may be performed down to the hearing threshold. Thus, the hearing threshold can be determined for every single frequency from 0.125 to 4 kHz if the reflex is elicitable up to 8 kHz.

An intense electrical stimulus can elicit a StartReact effect but with decreased incidence and later onset of the startle reflex.

Planned actions can be triggered involuntarily by a startling acoustic stimulus (SAS), resulting in very short reaction times (RT). This phenomenon, known as the StartReact effect, is thought to result from the startle-related activation of reticular structures. However, other sensory modalities also can elicit a reflexive startle response. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of an intense startling electric stimulus (SES) in eliciting the StartReact effect as compared to a SAS. We tested SES intensities at 15 and 25 times the perceptual threshold of each participant, as well as SAS intensitie

Synaptic excitation underlies processing of paired stimulation in the mouse inferior colliculus.

The inferior colliculus (IC) receives inputs from the ascending auditory pathway and helps localize the sound source by shaping neurons' responses. However, the contributions of excitatory or inhibitory synaptic inputs evoked by paired binaural stimuli with different inter-stimulus intervals to auditory responses of IC neurons remain unclear. Here, we firstly investigated the IC neuronal response to the paired binaural stimuli with different inter-stimulus intervals using in vivo loose-patch recordings in anesthetized C57BL/6 mice. It was found that the total acoustic evoked spikes remained un

Pitch Variation in Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Preliminary Findings.

Introduction Pitch variation, which refers to one's ability to vary fundamental frequency (F0) within or between syllables when speaking, has not been investigated in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). However, pitch variation plays an important role in tone languages, as varying F0 patterns communicate different lexical meanings. This study investigated pitch variation abilities in individuals with CAS via the tone-sequencing tasks (TSTs), focusing on task performance and the effects of syllable structure, lexical status, and tones. Method Three Cantonese-speaking children with

Effects of efferent acoustic reflex activation on psychoacoustical tuning curves in humans.

CONCLUSIONS: The results show that, in humans, activation of the contralateral EAR makes the PTC narrower at 1 kHz but wider at 4 kHz. These data are consistent with those reported previously in animals and demonstrate that, during medial efferent stimulation in humans, frequency resolution is improved at low frequencies but impaired at high frequencies. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in humans, the effect of activation of the contralateral efferent acoustic reflex (EAR) on the psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs) recorded for 1- and 4-kHz probe tones. Acoustic reflex measures at high probe frequency: a phasor diagram approach.

Acoustic reflex measures at high probe frequencies (above 660 Hz) have not been extensively reported in the published literature. Studies of the acoustic reflex at low probe frequencies conflict as to the effect of the reflex on resistance, although all researchers agree that the reflex increases the amount of negative reactance (stiffness). These differences may reflect methodological differences across studies. Lutman and his associates (Lutman and Martin 1979; Lutman et al., 1984) have used phasor diagrams to provide evidence for the effect of the reflex being on reactance, with constant re

Gap detection in multiple narrow bands of noise as a function of spectral configuration.

This study sought to differentiate between the effect of stimulus bandwidth and the effect of number of activated auditory channels on gap detection in narrow bands of noise. The aim was to clarify the role of across-frequency analysis in temporal processing. Experiment 1 established that when total noise bandwidth is held constant at 100 Hz, gap detection improves as stimulus energy is distributed to both lower and higher frequencies. Experiment 2a showed that the effect was smaller, or was absent, when the cumulative stimulus bandwidth was increased from 100 to 200 Hz. Experiment 2b confirme

[Suppression of evoked otoacoustic emissions by contralateral noise exposure in humans].

The effects of contralateral noise exposure on evoked otoacoustic emission (e-OAE) were investigated in 10 normal hearing subjects and 3 cases with unilateral deafness. The e-OAE was recorded by ILO88 and weighting noise was given to the contralateral ear (impaired side in unilateral deafness cases). The air conducted noise exposure showed suppressive effect on e-OAE along with the increase of noise stimulus intensity in normal hearing subjects, but did not in unilateral deafness cases. The degree of suppression in e-OAE was most remarkable in highest peak power between 1 kHz and 2 kHz in FFT

Stapedius reflex thresholds in relation to tails of auditory nerve fiber frequency tuning curves.

The acoustic stapedius reflex (ASR) threshold on non-anesthetized rabbits was compared to some measures of the single auditory nerve fiber activity of rabbits. The observations were made on normal-hearing animals, with some additional data from noise-exposed individuals. The results showed that the ASR threshold was reached at a sound level above saturation of discharge rate for individual neurons at their characteristic frequency (CF) in normal animals. It was found, on the other hand, that the ASR threshold measured across frequencies from 0.25 to 12.0 kHz were at a level similar to that of
