[The acoustics of the open mastoid cavity (so-called "radical cavity) and its modification by surgical measures. I. Physical principles, experimental studies].

Up to now the importance of the outer ear for the sound transmission is nearly neglected in the otosurgical literature. Nevertheless, surgical procedures can cause severe alterations in the anatomy of the outer ear channel. Necessarily variables which take influence on the acoustic behaviour of the outer ear can get changed by these surgical manipulations. By means of in-situ measurements of the sound-pressure-level near the tympanic membrane the influence of the ear channel/mastoid cavity volume as well as of the size of the outer meatus on the resonance frequency is investigated. In a model

Pressure- and frequency-dependent acoustic behavior of second-generation acoustic reporter genes-expressing bacteria for optimized ultrasound imaging.

Acoustic reporter genes (ARGs) enable genetically engineered bacteria to express gas vesicles (GVs), which function as intracellular acoustic scatterers for noninvasive ultrasound imaging. While second-generation ARGs (bARGSer) exhibit enhanced nonlinear acoustic properties, their signal-level acoustic characteristics remain incompletely understood. Moreover, how basic nonlinear pulse schemes and imaging parameters should be selected based on these acoustic characteristics for bARGSer-expressing bacteria has not been systematically evaluated. In this study, we investigated the pressure- and fr

Comparison of Two Multiparameter Acoustic Indices of Dysphonia Severity: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index and Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and the Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia (CSID) are two multiparameter acoustic indices designed to objectively estimate dysphonia severity and track treatment outcomes. This study compared the performance of these two indices using a common corpus of dysphonic speakers. METHOD: Pre- and posttreatment samples of sustained vowel and connected speech were elicited from 112 patients across six diagnostic categories: unilateral vocal fold paralysis (n = 20), adductor spasmodic dysphonia (n = 20), primary muscle tension dysphonia (n = 20), be

The changing face of acoustic neuroma management in the USA: analysis of the 1998 and 2008 patient surveys from the acoustic neuroma association.

OBJECTIVE: A recent review of the national cancer center registry Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database revealed that in the United States, 25% of Acoustic Neuromas (AN) are managed with observation. Several articles have questioned the aggressive treatment of these slow growing tumors. Concern has been raised that data from the SEER database might be biased towards treatment as patients who chose observation are less likely to be seen at a cancer center. To try and adjust for this potential bias, we decided to investigate management trends of AN in the United States using

[The cat acoustic cortex response to the signal localised signs under conditions of electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve and sound stimulation].

The mechanisms underlying acoustic capacity to localize the sound source in horizontal plane were studied. The results obtained are discussed from the aspect of existing ideas of the mechanisms providing the localization acoustic capacities in natural way of stimulation in neuronal activity of the acoustic centres. The data obtained are also considered from the viewpoint of a possible considerable improvement of deaf people's spatial orientation with the aid of bilateral implanted cochlear implants.

Diagnostic potential of acoustic startle reflex, acoustic blink reflex, and electro-oculography in progressive supranuclear palsy: a prospective study.

We carried out a prospective study to analyze the diagnostic potential of acoustic startle reflex (ASR), acoustic blink reflex (ABR) and electro-oculography (EOG) in early stages of atypical parkinsonian syndrome. The study was carried out in a consecutive series of 41 patients clinically diagnosed as atypical parkinsonism (mean time from first symptoms of 38 months and follow-up of 26 months). The three procedures were carried out immediately after the first clinical evaluation. ASR and ABR were elicited by auditory stimuli while the patient was attending to a simple reaction time task. Cerebellopontine angle tumours, other than acoustic neuromas. A report on 34 cases. A presentation of 7 bilateral acoustic neuromas.

The symptoms, preoperative diagnostic results and histological findings in 34 cerebellopontine angle tumour cases, other than acoustic neuromas, are presented. The meningeomas dominate by far this group of tumours. The symptomatology is much less uniform than that of the acoustic neuromas, where the VIII nerve is dominant. The facial nerve is less involved, whereas the other cranial nerves give symptoms more frequently. One remarkable sign is the presence of severe trigeminal neuralgia, which we have not encountered in acoustic neuromas. Only 35% of the 'non-neuroma' patients had elevated spin

Comparative Evaluation of Adaptive Focused Acoustics- and SP3-Based Workflows for Deep Proteomic Profiling of 30-Year-Old Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Tissues.

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues represent a vast archive for translational research that offers access to specimens with clinical outcomes. However, formalin-induced crosslinking hinders efficient protein extraction and limits proteomic applications. We systematically compared three protein extraction workflows, adaptive focused acoustics (AFA) with Covaris buffer (AFA/Covaris-b), AFA with SDS buffer (AFA/SDS-b), and SDS-based lysis followed by SP3 clean-up and digestion (SP3/SDS-b), using hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues archived for over 30 years. Benchmarking was perfo…

Monitoring and Modeling Tree Bat (Genera: Lasiurus, Lasionycteris) Occurrence Using Acoustics on Structures off the Mid-Atlantic Coast-Implications for Offshore Wind Development.

In eastern North America, "tree bats" (Genera: Lasiurus and Lasionycteris) are highly susceptible to collisions with wind energy turbines and are known to fly offshore during migration. This raises concern about ongoing expansion of offshore wind-energy development off the Atlantic Coast. Season, atmospheric conditions, and site-level characteristics such as local habitat (e.g., forest coverage) have been shown to influence wind turbine collision rates by bats onshore, and therefore may be related to risk offshore. Therefore, to assess the factors affecting coastal presence of bats, we continu

Exploring Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs) for Water Quality Sensor's Anti-Biofouling Application: A New Direction for Acoustic Waves.

Biofouling presents numerous challenges across various sectors, including aquaculture, agriculture, infrastructure, and medicine. The development of anti-biofouling techniques remains a significant challenge. In the water industry, biofouling on monitoring sensors substantially compromises the accuracy of measurements by interfering with the sensors' measuring ability. Biofouling also significantly increases the running costs by increasing the frequency of maintenance needed to keep sensors clean and accurate. Consequently, anti-biofouling techniques are widely employed to clean in situ optica

Scaled 3D-printed models of insect outer-ear with tympanic membranes and acoustic trachea preserving key acoustic features.

Katydids (Insecta, Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) possess a sophisticated foreleg ear with two tympana receiving sound externally through a pinna that acts as a bat detector and internally through an acoustic trachea for conspecific communication. Their miniature scale hinders experimentation, prompting the use of scaled models, yet previous studies have not replicated the full pinna-tympana assembly or the complete acoustic trachea. In this study, micro-CT imaging, AI-assisted segmentation and multi-material 3D-printed assembly were used to generate scaled models. Scaled copies of the pinna-tympa

Access and Polarization Electrode Impedance Changes in Electric-Acoustic Stimulation Cochlear Implant Users with Delayed Loss of Acoustic Hearing.

Acoustic hearing can be preserved after cochlear implant (CI) surgery, allowing for combined electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) and superior speech understanding compared to electric-only hearing. Among patients who initially retain useful acoustic hearing, 30-40 % experience a delayed hearing loss that occurs 3 or more months after CI activation. Increases in electrode impedances have been associated with delayed loss of residual acoustic hearing, suggesting a possible role of intracochlear inflammation/fibrosis as reported by Scheperle et al. (Hear Res 350:45-57, 2017) and Shaul et al. (Oto

No change in the acoustic reflex threshold and auditory brainstem response following short-term acoustic stimulation in normal hearing adults.

Unilateral auditory deprivation or stimulation can induce changes in loudness and modify the sound level required to elicit the acoustic reflex. This has been explained in terms of a change in neural response, or gain, for a given sound level. However, it is unclear if these changes are driven by the asymmetry in auditory input or if they will also occur following bilateral changes in auditory input. The present study used a cross-over trial of unilateral and bilateral amplification to investigate changes in the acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) and the auditory brainstem response (ABR) in nor

Remote acoustic monitoring of North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) reveals seasonal and diel variations in acoustic behavior.

Remote acoustic monitoring is a non-invasive tool that can be used to study the distribution, behavior, and habitat use of sound-producing species. The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is an endangered baleen whale species that produces a variety of stereotyped acoustic signals. One of these signals, the "gunshot" sound, has only been recorded from adult male North Atlantic right whales and is thought to function for reproduction, either as reproductive advertisement for females or as an agonistic signal toward other males. This study uses remote acoustic monitoring to analyze

Acoustic transparency and absorption in dense granular suspensions.

We demonstrate the existence of a frequency band exhibiting acoustic transparency in two- and three-dimensional dense granular suspensions, enabling the transmission of a low-frequency ballistic wave excited by a high-frequency broadband ultrasound pulse. This phenomenon is attributed to spatial correlations in the structural disorder of the medium. To support this interpretation, we use an existing model that incorporates such correlations via the structure factor. Its predictions are shown to agree well with those of the generalized coherent potential approximation (GCPA) model, which is kno

Broadband Excitation of Antiferromagnetic Dynamics by Acoustic Phonons.

Excitation of antiferromagnetic dynamics is at the core of ultrafast spintronics. Coherent excitation of antiferromagnetic magnons is typically monochromatic, confined at dispersion intersections between antiferromagnetic magnons and the excitation source. Broadband excitation can be enabled by introducing electron spins in an incoherent manner, albeit accompanied by high energy consumption from Joule heating. Here, we demonstrate a broadband excitation of antiferromagnetic dynamics of 2D antiferromagnet CrSBr without Joule heating, by Rayleigh-type surface acoustic wave (R-SAW). Incoherent ma

Contactless Acoustic Trapping of Hoverflies for Behavioral Studies.

Studying the sensorimotor response of flying insects is usually done in tethered conditions. The righting reflex, for example, is studied with insects that are released either from a rigid or a magnetic tether. The attached tether or magnet may, however, induce proprioceptive biases and behavioral artifacts through physical contact and additional mass or inertia. Here, we propose a contactless tether apparatus based on acoustic levitation. It relies on the emission of ultrasonic waves on both sides of the device, creating standing pressure waves-visualized using the schlieren technique-that en

Predictive acoustical processing in human cortical layers.

In our dynamic environments, predictive processing is vital for auditory perception and its associated behaviors. Predictive coding formalizes inferential processes by implementing them as information exchange across cortical layers and areas. With laminar-specific blood oxygenation level-dependent imaging we measured responses to a cascading oddball paradigm, to ground predictive auditory processes on the mesoscopic human cortical architecture. Using a modeling approach, we derive putative changes in neural dynamics while accounting for draining effects. We show that the violations of predict
