Differentiation of plant adaptive strategies on the Jingpo Lake lava plateau: a comparison of leaf and absorptive root functional trait spectra across different life forms.

Focusing on the highly heterogeneous habitat of the Jingpo Lake lava plateau, this study quantified 24 above- and below-ground functional traits across 12 dominant species. Transcending the conventional single-organ perspective, we investigated whether environmental stress drives the divergence of adaptive strategies by amplifying trait variation among distinct life forms. Woody plants exhibited substantially higher phenotypic plasticity than herbaceous species, with the average coefficient of variation for absorptive roots reaching 32.74% - approximately twice that of herbs. Structural adaptations of aboveground vegetative organs to cangas: A case study with the Amazonian species Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein (Rubiaceae), which grows on ferruginous outcrops.

The Brazilian ironstone outcrops (cangas) impose challenging conditions for establishing species. Adapted species should exhibit different responses to xeric conditions of cangas. To understand these adaptations, our plant model was Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein, an endemic and threatened species restricted to the cangas of the Amazon Forest. Herein, we investigate structural adaptations that are important for its conservation, including anatomical characteristics of stems and leaves. To this goal, we evaluated the plant anatomy, including developmental aspects, between plan

Transcriptional responses of the lower lip of Colossoma macropomum: An adaptation to aquatic surface respiration under hypoxic conditions.

Colossoma macropomum, a fish native to the Amazon with high ecological and economic importance, has become the principal regional model for studying adaptive strategies to low-oxygen environments. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying hypertrophy and expansion of the lower lip in C. macropomum, we performed a transcriptomic analysis under both hypoxic and normoxic conditions. We identified 1,704 genes with increased expression and 1,090 with decreased expression, while 27,475 genes showed no differential expression. The results indicate that the HIF pathway plays a crucial role in t

High-altitude hyperuricemia: a double-edged sword of adaptation and maladaptation.

Hyperuricemia is characterized by elevated serum uric acid levels and is associated with multiple diseases. Studies have consistently demonstrated that the prevalence of hyperuricemia in high-altitude areas is significantly higher than that in low-altitude areas. For high-altitude hyperuricemia, some environmental and genetic factors exhibit distinct characteristics among patients. Hyperuricemia also contributes to the onset and progression of a range of high-altitude-related disorders. Although studies have identified the characteristics of high-altitude hyperuricemia, the associations betwee

Placental mitochondria in high-altitude pregnancy: metabolic adaptations and a toolkit for respiratory assessment.

Ascent to high altitude is accompanied by physiological responses that, to an extent, mitigate the challenge of hypobaric hypoxia, maintaining arterial oxygen content and convective oxygen delivery. Nevertheless, arterial oxygen tension (pO2) remains low and tissue hypoxia persists, posing a challenge for metabolic and redox homeostasis, and therefore function. The physiological challenge of life at high altitude is well exemplified by human pregnancy. Infant birthweight falls at high altitude, and there is a greater incidence of pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and fetal growth r

Effects of strength training on neuromuscular adaptations in the development of maximal strength: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

A systematic review of the effects of resistance training on neuromuscular adaptations related to maximal strength enhances our understanding of the mechanisms and dose-response relationships involved. This evidence supports the scientific application of maximal strength to improve athletic performance in practice. Methods: We retrieved literature from CNKI, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. We utilised Review Manager 5.4.1 software to construct forest plots and assess methodological quality based on the standards outlined in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions (v

Long-term culturing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in static, minimal nutrient medium results in increased pyocyanin production, reduced biofilm production, and loss of motility.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a multidrug-resistant opportunistic human pathogen that can survive in many natural and anthropogenic environments. It is a leading cause of morbidity in individuals with cystic fibrosis and is one of the most prevalent pathogens associated with nosocomial infections in the United States. It has been shown that this organism can survive and persist in low-nutrient environments, such as sink drains. How adaptation to these types of environments influences the phenotypic traits of this organism has not been well studied. Here, we implemented an experimental evolution sy

Integrative Proteomic and Phosphoproteomic Profiling Reveals Molecular Mechanisms of Hypoxic Adaptation in Brandt's Voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) Brain Tissue.

Rapid ascent to high altitudes by unacclimatized individuals significantly increases the risk of brain damage, given the brain's heightened sensitivity to hypoxic conditions. Investigating hypoxia-tolerant animals can provide insights into adaptive mechanisms and guide prevention and treatment of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. In this study, we exposed Brandt's voles to simulated altitudes (100 m, 3000 m, 5000 m, and 7000 m) for 24 h and performed quantitative proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses of brain tissue. A total of 3990 proteins and 9125 phosphorylation sites (phospho-sites) were q

Adaptations of Xenograpsus testudinatus to shallow hydrothermal vent environments in the western Pacific: A comprehensive review.

The grapsoid crab Xenograpsus testudinatus, Ng et al. (2000) inhabits unique ecosystems of active shallow-water hydrothermal vents of the western Pacific volcanic rises as the dominant vent metazoan. This species provides a valuable model to explore population expansion, evolutionary ecology, metabolic regulation, genetic adaptation, and meta-population dynamics. A comprehensive literature review revealed that X. testudinatus, a dominant vent metazoan, has evolved robust metabolic strategies driven by mechanisms of acid-base regulation, allowing it to preserve its eco-physiological balance und

Laboratory Evolution: Molecular-Genetic Basis and Phenotypic Plasticity.

Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) is aimed at elucidating the molecular basis of adaptation and is widely employed as a tool for gaining deeper insight into genetic and/or metabolic pathways underlying evolutionary processes. One of the primary goals of experimental evolution is to predict mutations representing the key driving forces of adaptation. The use of whole-genome resequencing enables easy identification of mutations that arise during ALE, and consequently, biochemical alterations that occur in the experimental lineages. ALE has also proven highly relevant in practical applications,

Cadmium toxicity in plants: from transport to tolerance mechanisms.

Cadmium (Cd), a non-essential heavy metal, induces severe phytotoxicity through oxidative stress and cellular homeostasis disruption. Chronic Cd exposure inhibits plant growth via leaf chlorosis, stunted stem elongation, and impaired root architecture, while disrupting physiological functions through chlorophyll degradation, membrane peroxidation, and antioxidant system collapse. This review systematically investigates plant adaptive responses to Cd stress. It examines the processes of Cd uptake pathways, translocation dynamics, physiological toxicity, and molecular defense mechanisms. Key fin

From adaptation to exhaustion: defining exposure-related malnutrition as a bioenergetic phenotype of aging.

Aging is increasingly understood not as the passive accumulation of molecular damage, but as the cumulative cost of unresolved physiological adaptation under bioenergetic constraint. This review introduces Exposure-Related Malnutrition (ERM) as a mechanistically grounded and clinically actionable phenotype of early maladaptation. ERM arises from sustained metabolic strain during chronic stress exposure and manifests not through overt weight loss or nutrient deficiency, but through subtle, multisystem declines in physical, cognitive, and regenerative capacity. These include fatigue, impaired re

Effects of urbanization on local adaptation and eco-evolutionary feedbacks in white clover.

Urbanization is causing unprecedented ecological and evolutionary change worldwide. However, empirical evidence of local adaptation to urban environments is limited. Here we conduct a reciprocal transplant experiment using white clover (Trifolium repens) originating from urban and rural populations and distributed equally into five urban common gardens and five rural common gardens. Half of the plants in each garden produced the antiherbivore chemical defence hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and the other half lacked the defence, as this trait is known to exhibit genetic clines along urbanization gradi

Protein Intrinsic Disorder and Adaptation to Extreme Environments: Resilience of Chaos.

Extremophiles are organisms adapted not only to survive in harsh conditions but thrive in environments considered extreme or uninhabitable by most life forms. They serve as a living reflection of a popular motto "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and show that life on Earth is spread well outside the human-centric comfort zone. In fact, extremophiles, being found in deep crustal and oceanic depths, outer space, highly acidic and basic conditions, extreme temperatures (+122 °C to -20 °C), and in the presence of toxins and high radiation, demonstrate life's remarkable adaptability. Seasonal modulation of the testis transcriptome reveals insights into hibernation and reproductive adaptation in Onychostoma macrolepis.

The Onychostoma macrolepis have a unique survival strategy, overwintering in caves and returning to the river for reproduction in summer. The current knowledge on the developmental status of its testes during winter and summer is still undiscovered. We performed RNA-seq analysis on O. macrolepis testes between January and June, using the published genome (NCBI, ASM1243209v1). Through KEGG and GO enrichment analysis, we were able to identify 2111 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and demonstrate their functions in signaling networks associated with the development of organism. A triple distinction of cerebellar function for oculomotor learning and fatigue compensation.

The cerebellum implements error-based motor learning via synaptic gain adaptation of an inverse model, i.e. the mapping of a spatial movement goal onto a motor command. Recently, we modeled the motor and perceptual changes during learning of saccadic eye movements, showing that learning is actually a threefold process. Besides motor recalibration of (1) the inverse model, learning also comprises perceptual recalibration of (2) the visuospatial target map and (3) of a forward dynamics model that estimates the saccade size from corollary discharge. Yet, the site of perceptual recalibration remai

Adaptive changes in bodybuilders in conditions of different energy supply modes and intensity of training load regimes using machine and free weight exercises.

BACKGROUND: The research was aimed at comparing the effect of using two types of training load different in intensity and energy supply. We studied the influence of the proposed load variations (machine and free weight exercises) on long-term adaptation of the body at the stage of specialized basic training in bodybuilding. METHODS: A total of 64 athletes aged 18-20 years were examined. The research participants were randomly divided into four groups, 16 athletes in each group. Athletes of group 1 and 3 used a complex of free weight exercises. Group 2 and 4 participants performed machine exer

Prism adaptation in patients with unilateral lesion of the parietal or cerebellar cortex: A pilot study on two single cases using a concurrent exposure procedure.

Neuroimaging studies showed that prism adaptation (PA), a widely used tool for the rehabilitation of neglect, involves a wide network of brain regions including the parietal cortex and the cerebellum. In particular, the parietal cortex has been suggested to mediate the initial stage of PA through conscious compensatory mechanisms as a reaction to the deviation induced by PA. The cerebellum, on the other side, intervenes in sensory errors prediction to update internal models in later stages. It has been suggested that two mechanisms may underlie PA effects: recalibration, a strategic cognitive
