Normal psychological changes in adolescence.

It behooves physicians to be aware that adolescents are different people, that they have a vast capacity for change, that they often exhibit the sickest kind of behavior, which may be very frightening to us and to them. Physicians have to be able to wait and not become panicked by the turbulences, confusions, and contradictions that mark the adolescent's behavior; to keep in mind at all times that much of what is going on is relatively normal behavior in the drive toward maturation and adulthood; that the adolescent has to cope with his sexual drive which is continually frustrated, that he has

A meta-analysis of coping strategies and psychological distress in rheumatoid arthritis.

PURPOSE: Theory and research indicate that coping plays a central role in the experience of psychological distress in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study meta-analysed the associations of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies with psychological distress in people with RA to quantify and better understand the proposed differential relationships, as well as the factors that might influence these links. METHODS: Searches of four databases identified eligible studies according to a pre-registered protocol. Two random effects meta-analyses examined the direction and magnitude of

Navigating Trauma and Mental Health: The Role of Social Support, Psychological Resilience, and Psychological Sense of Community Among Urban Adolescents of Color.

BACKGROUND: Urban adolescents of color experience disproportionately high rates of trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance use. Yet, limited research has examined how protective factors-such as social support, psychological resilience, and psychological sense of community (SOC) or community connectedness-interact to influence these outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 2002 adolescents (ages 12-18) from two urban high schools in Northeastern New Jersey. Participants completed validated measures assessing trauma (Child Trauma Screen), depression (PHQ-9A), anxiety (G

Defense mechanisms and inflammatory bowel diseases: a narrative review.

Growing evidence highlights the crucial role of defense mechanisms in the context of chronic diseases. However, few studies have evaluated the impact of these implicit emotion regulation strategies on the adaptation processes related to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). This narrative review aimed to explore the role of defense mechanisms in patients with IBD and clarify their association with related psychological and physical symptoms. A literature search was conducted using PubMed and PsycINFO databases to select studies considering defense mechanisms in patients with IBD. Inclusion criter

Hope and despair in cancer and other illnesses: a clinical framework for adaptive hope across the illness trajectory.

Hope and despair are central and often coexisting dimensions of the experience of cancer and other serious illnesses. Hope profoundly shapes how patients understand prognosis, engage with treatment, and make decisions across the illness trajectory. When poorly managed, hope may contribute to prognostic misunderstanding, burdensome overtreatment, erosion of trust, and clinician distress. This narrative review synthesizes empirical and conceptual literature on hope and despair in oncology and serious illness, examining their determinants, clinical manifestations, and implications for communicati

Maladaptive behaviors in disasters: case study evaluation of Hurricane Hugo, Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti Earthquake.

Maladaptive behaviors during a disaster refer to actions that do not benefit the individual or society. Quarantelli highlights several maladaptive behaviors myths associated with disasters: widespread antisocial behavior, passivity, role conflict or abandonment, and sudden widespread mental health breakdowns (1). Despite early work reporting these myths, the common perception is that maladaptive behaviors such as rioting, looting, panic, and criminal conduct are prevalent in the wake of disasters. This is despite research by de Ville de Goyet and Arnold which has called on public officials and

The Relationship Between Early Maladaptive Schemas and Cluster C Personality Disorder Traits: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the literature on the relationship between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and Cluster C personality disorders (PDs). Our aim was to clarify which of the 18 EMSs exhibit the strongest associations and are most frequently endorsed in clinical and non-clinical samples with Cluster C PDs and traits. RECENT FINDINGS: After initially screening 2622 records, 12 studies were selected with 5310 participants. Meta-analyses of the raw correlation coefficients for each EMS-Cluster C PD link (3-8 studies per meta-analysis) indicated that th

Feeding Stressors and Resources Used by Caregivers of Children With Down Syndrome: A Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Challenging eating behaviors or feeding difficulties, commonly displayed in children with Down syndrome (DS), may amplify perceived stress in caregivers. If caregivers lack resources on how to accommodate the needs of the child with DS, they may find feeding the child stressful and resort to negative coping strategies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the feeding stressors, resources, and coping strategies used by caregivers of children with DS. DESIGN: A qualitative analysis of interview transcripts was undertaken, framed around the Transactional Model of Stres

Adaptation at the Family Level in Families of Individuals With Down Syndrome: A Scoping Review.

Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal disorder associated with intellectual and physical disabilities and has historically been viewed by health care providers through a negative lens when considering the effect the condition has on the individual, family, and community. The purpose of this scoping review was to provide an overview of recent research concerning adaptation in families of individuals with DS with a focus on family adaptation rather than individual or dyadic adaptation. Three literature indexes were searched from 2017 to 2022, with 41 articles included. Foci of the studies included

The mediating role of controllability appraisals and coping strategies on adaptive functioning after job loss: a path model.

Job loss is a stressful event that increases the risk of experiencing depression and anxiety, especially during the initial months of unemployment. This study examined differences in psychological symptoms and resilient functioning accounted by employment status. The results pointed out that recently unemployed compared to currently employed individuals had lower levels of perceived controllability and resilience as well as higher levels of depression and anxiety. Path analyses showed that lower controllability appraisals at wave 1 of recently unemployed compared to employed individuals, in tu
