In a comparison of two groups of children undergoing adenoidectomy, the introduction of routine hearing tests revealed 30.8% more patients with secretory otitis media than in a control group in which tests were carried out only if profound hearing loss was suspected. The history and ear examination were insufficient for detection of secretory otitis media. Evaluation of patients not suspected of hearing loss revealed 24.5% more cases of secretory otitis media than by routine hearing tests. In 25.8% the secretory media recurred, requiring paracentesis or insertion of drainage tubes.

During a three year period, pediatric patients 4 to 16 years old were post-operatively screened for anaesthesia-induced myoglobinuria. All investigated cases had general anaesthesia and received succinylcholine prior to intubation. Anaesthetics were predominantly performed for tonsillectomies and/or adenoidectomies. Acute stroke as a complication of sinusitis is exceedingly rare, and even more so in children. Here we present the case of a healthy 9-year-old male who had an acute stroke in the setting of severe acute pansinusitis. The patient was started on parenteral antibiotics and underwent urgent endoscopic sinus surgery and adenoidectomy, ultimately making a full neurologic recovery. A 7-year-old Sikh boy with a history of syncopal attacks and congenital deafness was admitted for elective adenoidectomy and examination of his ears under general anaesthesia. Immediately after induction of anaesthesia an ECG demonstrated T wave inversion in the CM5 lead. The child subsequently developed multifocal ventricular extrasystoles and later, ventricular fibrillation. Defibrillation was achieved using two 50 J DC shocks. A 12-lead ECG performed later demonstrated a prolonged Q-Tc interval (0.52 s). The child was diagnosed as having the Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome.
