Paediatric ocular super glue injuries: assessment of two cases.

In this report, we elaborate the clinical findings and the optimal management of two cases with ocular glue injuries in two paediatric patients. Both the patients were presented to the ocular emergency with completely closed eyelid and periocular erythema. The eyelids were completely closed due to matting of the eyelashes with glue retention up to lash roots. Thus, in both cases, after the application of local anaesthetic agent, immediate lash trimming was performed along with the removal of crystallised glue particles. However, the ocular surface showed only congestion in absence of any added

Effects of an antioxidant protective topical formulation on eye exposed to ultraviolet-irradiation: a study in rabbit animal model.

Ultraviolet-radiation exerts a well-known role in the development of various ocular diseases and may contribute to the progress of age-related macular degeneration. Therefore, the use of compounds able to protect the eyes from UV-induced cellular damage is challenging. The aim of this study has been to test the protective effects of an antioxidant topical formulation against UV-induced damage in rabbit eyes. Twelve male rabbits were used. Animals were divided into 4 groups of 3 animals each. Control group (CG) did not receive any irradiation and/or eye drop. The other three experimental groups

Ciclosporin Ophthalmic Emulsion 0.1%: A Review in Severe Dry Eye Disease.

Ciclosporin ophthalmic emulsion 0.1% (hereafter referred to as ciclosporin 0.1%) [Ikervis®] is an unpreserved cationic emulsion formulation containing an 0.1% concentration of ciclosporin. It has been approved in various countries worldwide, including those of the EU, for the treatment of severe keratitis in adults with dry eye disease, which has not improved despite treatment with tear substitutes. In a multinational, phase III study in this patient population, once-daily ciclosporin 0.1% was associated with statistically significant and clinically relevant improvements in the signs (corneal

Novel Water-Soluble Mucoadhesive Carbosilane Dendrimers for Ocular Administration.

The purpose of this research was to determine the potential use of water-soluble anionic and cationic carbosilane dendrimers (generations 1-3) as mucoadhesive polymers in eyedrop formulations. Cationic carbosilane dendrimers decorated with ammonium -NH3(+) groups were prepared by hydrosylilation of Boc-protected allylamine and followed by deprotection with HCl. Anionic carbosilane dendrimers with terminal carboxylate groups were also employed in this study. In vitro and in vivo tolerance studies were performed in human ocular epithelial cell lines and rabbit eyes respectively. The interaction

Comparative clinical evaluation of tacrolimus and cyclosporine eye drops for the treatment of canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of tacrolimus eye drops in alleviating the clinical symptoms of canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and to compare this efficacy with that of cyclosporine. The clinical study was conducted on 40 dogs diagnosed with idiopathic KCS. The dogs were divided into two groups of 20 animals each. In Group I, 0.75% cyclosporine eye drops were administered three times a day, while in Group II 0.02% tacrolimus eye drops were given twice daily. In addition, each group was subdivided into three subgroups based on the results of Schirmer tear test I (STT

Nanotherapies for the treatment of ocular diseases.

The topical route is the most frequent and preferred way to deliver drugs to the eye. Unfortunately, the very low ocular drug bioavailability (less than 5%) associated with this modality of administration, makes the efficient treatment of several ocular diseases a significant challenge. In the last decades, it has been shown that specific nanocarriers can interact with the ocular mucosa, thereby increasing the retention time of the associated drug onto the eye, as well as its permeability across the corneal and conjunctival epithelium. In this review, we comparatively analyze the mechanism of

[Pollinosis: drug treatments].

The medical treatment of allergic rhino-conjunctivitis involves different classes of drugs administered locally or by general route. They belong to three main classes, antihistamines, steroids and mast cell stabilizers. Since it is a relatively benign and also highly common disease, treatment options are limited by possible, even mild, side effects and by cost efficacy restriction. In the more severe forms of the condition, treatment efficacy remains unsatisfactory.

Topical ocular delivery of fluoroquinolones.

INTRODUCTION: Topical fluoroquinolones are used in ophthalmology to treat ocular infections. They are bactericidal and inhibit bacterial DNA replication by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase. Fluoroquinolones possess two ionizable groups: a carboxylic group (pKa1 = 5.5 - 6.34) and a heterocyclic group (pKa2 = 7.6 - 9.3), in the nucleus, which acquire charge at pH above and below the isoelectric point (pI = 6.75 - 7.78). At isoelectric point, fluoroquinolones remain unionized and show enhanced corneal penetration but exhibit reduced aqueous solubility and the drug may precipitate from aque

Drug-induced fatal aplastic anemia following cataract surgery.

Aplastic anemia attributed to medications used in ophthalmology is rare. We report a fatal case that developed in a 73-year-old woman 7 weeks after cataract extraction performed under local anesthesia. Postoperative medications included a chloramphenicol-containing ointment, flurbiprofen sodium drops, prednisone acetate drops and orally given acetazolamide. It was felt that the aplastic anemia was related to therapy with chloramphenicol or acetazolamide or both. We recommend that the course of prophylactic antibacterial therapy after intraocular surgery be kept short, regardless of the prepara

[Xerosis caused by abuse of vasoconstrictor eye drops: apropos of a case].

This is the case of a 63 year old patient with chronic conjunctivitis on chronic local phenylephrine instillation for the last 13 years. We have observed that the protracted use of vasoconstrictor eyedrops can induce conjunctival xerosis and that its simple withdrawal can result in marked symptomatic improvement leaving behind only degenerative cicatricial changes.

Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii as a pathogen of a Jones tube infection following conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy.

A 35-year-old woman complained of an unpleasant odor for a few days after a change in foundation cream. The patient had previously undergone conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy with a Jones tube fixed with non-absorbable suture. Slit-lamp examination revealed an orange-colored discharge in the tube. A culture test of the discharge showed Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii (1+), Aspergillus versicolor (1+), and Mycobacterium chelonae (1+). After medical treatment and suture removal, the discharge completely disappeared. This is the first reported case of a Jones tube infection following conjunctivo-d

Preliminary Investigation on Simvastatin-Loaded Polymeric Micelles in View of the Treatment of the Back of the Eye.

There is increasing consensus in considering statins beneficial for age-related macular degeneration and in general, for immune and inflammatory mediated diseases affecting the posterior segment of the eye. However, all available data relate to oral administration, and safety and effectiveness of statins directly administered to the eye are not yet known, despite their ophthalmic administration could be beneficial. The aim was the development and the characterization of polymeric micelles based on TPGS or TPGS/poloxamer 407 to increase simvastatin solubility and stability and to enhance the de

[Influence of Aging on Severity and Anti-Inflammatory Treatment of Experimental Dry Eye Disease].

Purpose Aging is an important factor in dry-eye disease that has not been studied in the context of therapeutic measures. Aging-associated modifications of the ocular immune system implicate that anti-inflammatory therapies may act differently among younger individuals in terms of onset and effect of different substances. The goal of this study was to determine differences in clinical phenotype and topical anti-inflammatory therapy using a desiccating stress mouse model. Methods An experimental dry-eye disease (desiccating stress model) was induced in 12-week and 12-month-old female BALB/c mic
