BACKGROUND: Adolescent e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) has increased in prevalence, and while cases describing various pulmonary manifestations have been reported, reports on the presentations and outcomes in teenage patients are sparse.
METHODS: We retrospectively describe eight EVALI patients with different presentations, laboratory and imaging findings, treatment, and concomitant diagnoses. We review the literature and describe how our analysis adds to the literature.
FINDINGS: Eight males, aged 15-18 years of age presented with various symptoms. Four pati

The authors used data from the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta, GA), National Hospital Discharge Survey, U.S. Census, and surveys of sexual activity in adolescent women to estimate age-specific rates of infectious syphilis, gonorrhea, and pelvic inflammatory disease requiring hospitalization among sexually experienced adolescent and young adult women in 1971 and 1976. Rates of all three diseases were highest in adolescents and declined exponentially with increasing age. Age-related reporting biases are unlikely to account for these findings. Aspects of adolescent sexual behavior and repro

INTRODUCTION: Many children and adolescents have mental problems that undermine their normal development and functioning. It is estimated that about 10% of children and adolescents suffer from mental disorders at a sufficiently severe level to cause some degree of damage and require treatment.
AIM: The aim of this paper is to determine whether there have been changes in the diagnostic categories in developmental psychiatry in children and adolescents treated at the Department for Children and Adolescent Psychiatry for the last fifteen years.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The survey includes 844 pati

A 32-year-old child and adolescent psychiatry resident with a history of presenting an abstract at a local psychiatric conference during residency and fourth authorship on an immunotherapy paper from a summer internship during medical school presents with a new-onset desire to write a case report. She has just come off her consultation liaison rotation, during which she consulted on a 12-year-old boy with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and low depressive state hospitalized for pseudoseizures, a new-onset inabilit

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) often begins in adolescence, however, the understanding of the underlying pathophysiology at this developmentally important age is scarce, impeding early interventions. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to investigate microstructural white matter (WM) brain changes including an experimental longitudinal follow-up.
METHODS: We acquired whole brain diffusion-weighted brain scans of 22 adolescent female hospitalized patients with AN at admission and nine patients longitudinally at discharge after weight rehabilitation. Patients (10-18 years) were compared t

BACKGROUND: Injury is one of the most common reasons adolescents are prescribed opioids. Little is known about adolescent experiences who used prescription opioids throughout their recovery from traumatic injury.
METHODS: We used a qualitative exploratory study design nested within a longitudinal cohort study conducted at two trauma hospitals in the United States. We conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with adolescents (n = 28) aged from 12 to 20 years at the time of their hospital admission for injury. We used purposive sampling to gather a broad range of experiences from the long

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are expressed differently in children and adolescents than in adults. Consequently, diagnostic procedures and multidisciplinary treatments need to be tailored to the unique developmental, medical, nutritional, and psychological needs of children and adolescents with eating disorders. This paper reviews current research outlining the differences between child, adolescent, and adult eating disorders. Research is then reviewed concerning the effectiveness of hospitalization, partial hospitalization, individual dynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, int

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (PSS) is a rare autoimmune disease in children and adolescents. The initial pleural manifestations are exceptional. We report the case of a 16-year-old adolescent hospitalized for bilateral chest pain with pleurisy. The initial diagnosis of tuberculosis was suspected due to the clinical context and local endemicity, but microbiological and histological examinations were negative. The presence of anti-Sjögren's syndrome type A (anti-SSA) antibodies and a salivary gland biopsy confirming chronic sialadenitis allowed for the diagnosis of PSS. Management by corticosteroi

Diffuse fasciitis with eosinophilia (EF) is a rare condition classified as a part of the connective tissue disorders. The clinical presentation of this condition can be diverse, however the main symptoms include symmetrical swelling and hardening of distal parts of limbs accompanied by peripheral eosinophilia. The diagnostic criteria are not specified. In inconclusions cases Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and skin to muscle biopsy may be useful. The pathogenesis and ethiology remain unknown, but extensive physical exertion, certain infectious factors, such as Borrelia burgdorferi, or medicat

Invasive pneumococcal disease predominantly affects younger children, elderly, and immunocompromised patients. Pneumococcal meningitis is a particularly important form of presentation, considering its high rate of morbimortality. We present the case of a previously healthy 12-year-old adolescent male who was hospitalized due to suspicion of osteoarticular infection in his left foot. A few hours later, he developed meningeal signs, exhibiting slight pleocytosis and Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates in both cerebrospinal fluid and blood. Imaging studies were inconclusive regarding the nature of

This study reports the development of adaptive processes in two groups of adolescents assessed initially and 2 years later with clinical research interviews. Students from a public high school (N = 44) and inpatients on an adolescent psychiatric ward (N = 51) formed the two subject groups. The psychiatrically hospitalized group had significantly improved scores after a 2-year interval on four of six adaptive process Summary Scales: Task Orientation, Relatedness, Self Knowledge, and Inner Synthetic Functions. However, these higher scores did not reach the levels of the high school group at eith

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents can have mental, emotional, and behavior problems that are a source of stress for the child as well as the family, school and community. These may disrupt the adolescent's ability to function normally. Adolescents also have reproductive concerns especially at menarche. Considering the extent of problems of adolescents and the lack of adolescent care and counseling services, it was felt that community adolescent care counseling services should be made available. This article describes the steps involved in the setting up of Taluk model of adolescent care and counseling se

OBJECTIVE: Nulliparous women are frequently hospitalized for treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
GOAL: The goal of this study was to determine the economic feasibility of hospitalizing adolescents and young women for PID.
STUDY DESIGN: The authors conducted a Markov decision model, estimating the cost-effectiveness of hospitalization compared with outpatient therapy for mild to moderate PID for adolescents and young women, calculating costs per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained under various assumptions about hospitalization effects on complications.
RESULTS: If hospitali

BACKGROUND The children of depressed parents are more likely to suffer from mental illness, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD). However, most data come from adolescent and young-adult populations, and published studies have reported inconsistent results regarding intergenerational transmission. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively investigated hospitalized depressed patients with positive family history (FHP) from 1 Jan 2008 to 31 Dec 2017 and analyzed the differences in sex distribution in the intergenerational transfer risk of major depressive disorder. RESULTS We enrolled 528 p

OBJECTIVES: Due to their developmental characteristics, adolescents have a higher probability than other age groups of experiencing injuries caused by accidents, violence, and intentional self-harm. The severity and characteristics of injuries vary by the intentionality and mechanism of injury; therefore, there is a need for a national-level estimate of the scale and the severity of injuries in adolescents that takes these factors into account.
METHODS: By using data from the Emergency Department-based Injury In-depth Surveillance Data, National Emergency Department Information System, the Ko

Although borderline personality disorder (BPD) is frequently characterized by nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI), suicide attempts (SA), suicidal ideation (SI), and/or suicide threats (ST), it is unclear whether these behaviors are precursors of BPD in adolescence. This study examined self-harm/suicide-related behaviors in the development of BPD from adolescence to adulthood in psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Participants were 116 adolescents consecutively admitted for a psychiatric hospitalization for self-harm/suicide-related behaviors. Adolescents completed self-report que

Life stressors and hormonal dysregulation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are common factors that play a role in both anorexia nervosa (AN) and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The complexity of combined CAH and AN on the HPA axis has not, to our knowledge, been previously illustrated. We present a report of an adolescent with CAH who developed AN, requiring hospitalized management. We use this case to review the pathophysiology of CAH and AN as it relates to the stress response and hormonal dysregulation within the HPA axis. We then highlight the interplay between these
