The practice of following benign-appearing gastric ulcers until healing was critically evaluated in a retrospective manner by reviewing all gastric ulcers that were followed with serial endoscopy and all gastric cancers diagnosed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Medical records of 118 newborn infants with Down's syndrome were reviewed to document the types of congenital heart disease (CHD) in those having echocardiography. Of 102 infants having echocardiography, 49 (48%) had heart defects; 47 of these had trisomy 21 and 2 had unbalanced translocation karyotypes. Somatization disorder is a condition characterized by multiple unexplained complaints. To characterize this disorder as it occurs in a university hospital, a sample of 213 patients admitted to adult medical and surgical services was studied. Since 1980, three immunocompromised patients have been proved to have progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) by brain biopsy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Two patients presented with focal neurological findings, and the third presented with dementia. Computed tomography (CT) revealed white matter low density lesions in areas appropriate to the neurological abnormalities.
