Does normalization of SARS-CoV-2 concentrations by Pepper Mild Mottle Virus improve correlations and lead time between wastewater surveillance and clinical data in Alberta (Canada): comparing twelve SARS-CoV-2 normalization approaches.

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) data normalization is an analyte measurement correction that addresses variations resulting from dilution of fecal discharge by non-sanitary sewage, stormwater or groundwater infiltration. No consensus exists on what WBS normalization parameters result in the strongest correlations and lead time between SARS-CoV-2 WBS data and COVID-19 cases. This study compared flow, population size and biomarker normalization impacts on the correlations and lead times for ten communities in twelve sewersheds in Alberta (Canada) between September 2020 and October 2021 (n = …

Prevalence, Treatment, and Follow-Up for Lymphogranuloma Venereum Serovars of Chlamydia trachomatis Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Attending Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinics in Alberta, Canada, 2018 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) have been reported among gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with other men (gbMSM) in Europe and North America. In Alberta, Canada, a universal surveillance program was initiated to assess LGV rates among gbMSM seen at provincial sexually transmitted infection clinics. Our study examines the epidemiological characteristics and treatment of cases. METHODS: We describe a prospective, multicenter LGV surveillance program using chlamydia-positive nucleic acid amplification test specimens from gbMSM collected at 3 sexually transmitted infect…

Hypodensity of >1/3 middle cerebral artery territory versus Alberta Stroke Programme Early CT Score (ASPECTS): comparison of two methods of quantitative evaluation of early CT changes in hyperacute ischemic stroke in the community setting.

BACKGROUND: The one third middle cerebral artery territory ((1/3) MCA) method and the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) were used to detect significant early ischemic changes (EIC) on CT brain of acute stroke patients. We sought to compare the reliability of the 2 methods in routine clinical practice. METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients admitted to a community hospital in Hong Kong with suspected acute ischemic stroke and a CT brain scan performed within 6 hours of symptom onset were included. Five blinded observers (1 neurologist, 2 general radiologists, and 2 neuroradiologist…

ICD-10 coding for congenital anomalies: a Canadian experience.

The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10 CM) will be implemented on October 1, 2013 in the United States by institutions such as hospitals and insurance companies, and by surveillance programs and registries. The Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (ACASS) experienced a transition in 2000, changing from the British Paediatric Association version of ICD-9 (ICD-9 BPA) to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health adaptation of ICD-10 (ICD-10 RCPCH). Although the United States will use ICD-10 CM, the experiences discussed are …

Operationalizing an early time-to-decompression best practice & monitoring approach in a provincial health system.

A collaborative, multidisciplinary, provincial approach was constructed involving a provincial working group (WG) in a province-wide health system in Alberta, Canada to advance an early (< 24 h) time-to-decompression for adult patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (traumatic SCI). Key elements for the WG included the organizational context; theoretical foundation and guiding principles; pre-engagement activities; WG activities; and evidence reviews. This approach yielded inter-connected deliverables to advance early time-to-decompression in traumatic SCI: (1) a provincial best practice re…

A pediatric experience with endoscopic third ventriculostomy for hydrocephalus.

Pediatric neuroscience nurses deal with many children with hydrocephalus. This paper will provide a review of hydrocephalus with a specific focus on third ventriculostomy. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is an accepted treatment option for patients with obstructive hydrocephalus. At the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, we have been performing ETV for 15 years. This experience has helped us better understand the complications and benefits of ETV. The author will provide data on the complications specific to ETV in pediatric patients at the Alberta Children's Hospital. A c…

Changes in alcohol problems as a result of changing alcohol consumption: a natural experiment.

Alcohol consumption declined by about 10.5% in Quebec and 2.5% in Ontario but increased by 9.5% in Alberta in the years 1974-1983. This created a 'natural experiment' in which the effects of various changes in alcohol consumption on alcohol problems could be assessed. Declines in rates of most alcohol problems were found in Quebec and Ontario despite their different rates of decrease in consumption. However, there were declines in alcoholism rates, and deaths from liver disease and the alcohol dependency syndrome in Alberta. Some problems such as impaired driving and toxic or accidental deaths…

Effect of Model of Neonatal Care on Neurodevelopment at the 18 Month Follow-Up in Moderate and Late Preterm Infants.

Background: Preterm birth, even for moderate or late preterm infants (MLPIs), is associated with longer-term developmental challenges. Family Integrated Care (FICare) models of care, like Alberta FICare, aim to improve outcomes by integrating parents into neonatal care during hospitalization. This follow-up study examined the association between models of care (Alberta FICare versus standard care) and risk of child developmental delay at 18 months corrected age (CA) and explored the influences of maternal psychosocial distress. Methods: We assessed 257 mothers and 298 infants from a cluster ra…

The influence of a continuum of care model on the rehabilitation of compensation claimants with soft tissue disorders.

STUDY DESIGN: Population-based before-and-after design with concurrent control group. OBJECTIVE: As continuums of care have been little studied, we evaluated the impact of the Workers' Compensation Board of Alberta (WCB-Alberta) model on sustained return to work, satisfaction with care, and cost. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, continue to be leading causes of disability and work loss. From 1996 through 1997, the WCB-Alberta implemented a continuum of care model to guide rehabilitation service delivery for claimants with soft tissue injury. The mode…

Modelling geographic variations in West Nile virus.

BACKGROUND: This paper applies a method for modelling the spatial variation of West Nile virus (WNv) in humans using bird, environmental and human testing data. METHODS: We used data collected from 503 Alberta municipalities. In order to manage the effects of residual spatial autocorrelation, we used generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to model the incidence of infection. RESULTS: There were 275 confirmed cases of WNv in the 2003 calendar year in Alberta. Our spatial model indicates that living in the grasslands natural region and levels of human testing are significant positive predictor…
