Early anatomy ultrasound in women at increased risk of fetal anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess the accuracy of ultrasound anatomy screening before 17 weeks gestation in a population at high risk of fetal anomalies. METHODS: Retrospective review of anatomy ultrasound examinations carried out between 12-17 weeks gestation in a high-risk population. Early sonographic findings were compared with the 18-22 week anatomy ultrasound, karyotype, echocardiogram and postnatal/postmortem results. RESULTS: A complete anatomical survey was achieved in 68 of 101 screened fetuses (67%), with cardiac anatomy having the lowest completion rate (78/101; 77%).

Clinical analysis of sixty-nine children with anomalous aortic origin of the coronary artery.

We aimed to analyse the clinical characteristics of children with different types of anomalous aortic origin of the coronary artery (AAOCA) at different ages, and to discuss the factors related to myocardial ischaemia. In this retrospective study, we included 69 children diagnosed with AAOCA using CT coronary angiography; we classified the participants based on the type of AAOCA, age, and high-risk anatomy. The clinical characteristics of the different AAOCA types and age groups were compared, and the correlation between manifestations and high-risk anatomy was analysed. Anomalous origin of th

Pelvic + Anatomy: A new interactive pelvic anatomy model. Prospective randomized control trial with first-year midwife residents.

Detailed knowledge of female pelvic floor anatomy is essential for midwifery and other professionals in obstetrics. Physical models have shown great potential for teaching anatomy and enhancing surgical skills. In this article, we introduce an innovative physical anatomy model called "Pelvic+" to teach anatomical relationships in the female pelvis. The Pelvic+ model's value was compared to a traditional lecture in 61 first-year midwifery students randomly allocated to either the Pelvic+ (n = 30) or a control group (n = 32). The primary outcome measure was a quiz comprised of 15 multiple choice

Coronary sinus anatomical features: Description and procedural implications during coronary sinus Reducer implantation.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that some coronary sinus (CS) anatomies allow a more straightforward CS Reducer (CSR) implantation. BACKGROUND: Recent decades have seen a rise in patients with chronic angina. When complete revascularization and maximal medical therapy fail to reduce symptoms, CSR has become a new therapeutic option. METHODS: We identified a classical C-shape-a near horizontal course of the proximal portion of a circular CS-in a retrospective analysis of 47 CSR implantations and compared the procedural time, fluoroscopic time, contrast use, presence of valves or bifurcations and

Use of a cap in single-balloon enteroscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiography.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Cannulation of the native papilla in surgically altered anatomy is difficult in endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC). There are limited data regarding the success of single-balloon enteroscopy-assisted ERC (SBE-ERC) in patients with a native papilla and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Use of a plastic cap may assist cannulation in these cases. The aim of the current study was to investigate the use of SBE-ERC with a cap (Cap-SBE-ERC) in patients with surgically altered anatomy referred for ERC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with surgically altered anatomy (hepatico

Major aorto-pulmonary collateral arteries of patients with pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect are dilated bronchial arteries.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that major aorto-pulmonary collaterals (MAPCAs) have the same anatomy as bronchial arteries. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-eight angiographies performed on 61 patients with pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect (VSD), and MAPCAs constituted the basis for this study. This represented all available angiographies performed on this patient group at our institution during the period 1972-2001. MAPCA anatomy was compared to bronchial artery anatomy as described in previous publications. RESULTS: Each patient had one to five MAPCAs (mean 3.2+/-0.94). A mea

The broad ligament: a review of its anatomy and development in different species and hormonal environments.

The broad ligament is a double fold of peritoneum forming a mesentery for the human female genital tract. We investigated the anatomy of the broad ligament in different species and its hormonal regulation to determine if it had a role in gonadal positioning. The medical and veterinary literature was reviewed for descriptions of broad ligament anatomy and development. In addition, four adult female rats were dissected to compare the macroscopic anatomy of the broad ligament with any homologous structures in the male (n = 2). Detailed review was made of human males with persistent Müllerian duct

Use of deformed intensity distributions for on-line modification of image-guided IMRT to account for interfractional anatomic changes.

PURPOSE: Recent imaging studies have demonstrated that there can be significant changes in anatomy from day to day and over the course of radiotherapy as a result of daily positioning uncertainties and physiologic and clinical factors. There are a number of strategies to minimize such changes, reduce their impact, or correct for them. Measures to date have included improved immobilization of external and internal anatomy or adjustment of positions based on portal or ultrasound images. Perhaps the most accurate way is to use CT image-guided radiotherapy, for which the possibilities range from s

"The tactile realness of 'life' is hitting me in the face": Unprompted student reflections of dissection using formalin- and Thiel-embalmed donors.

There is a wide variety of preservation techniques available, and anatomy departments can select an embalming method(s) that best suits their course outcomes. Thiel embalming is becoming popular due to the life-like color and flexibility it provides tissue. This study examined student-perceived impact of learning anatomy by dissecting Thiel-embalmed donors compared with formalin-embalmed donors, and evaluated the reflective learning portfolios of postgraduate anatomy students' over two different cohorts. The first cohort studied limb and back anatomy using formalin-embalmed donors, and afterwa

PERTINENT DRY NEEDLING CONSIDERATIONS FOR MINIMIZING ADVERSE EFFECTS - PART ONE.

BACKGROUND: Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment technique that is accepted and used by physical therapists in the United States. This treatment approach focuses on releasing or inactivating muscular trigger points to decrease pain, reduce muscle tension, and assist patients with an accelerated return to active rehabilitation. ISSUE: While commonly used, the technique has some patient risk and value of the treatment should be based on benefit compared to the potential risk. Adverse effects (AEs) with dry needling can be mild or severe, with overall incidence rates varying from zero to

Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of Intracardiac Anatomy Using CTA and Surgical Planning for Double Outlet Right Ventricle: Early Experience at a Tertiary Care Congenital Heart Center.

BACKGROUND: Although transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) routinely establishes the diagnosis of double outlet right ventricle (DORV), it can be suboptimal for depicting exact ventricular septal defect (VSD) position, especially with respect to the outflow tracts. Advanced imaging with computed tomography angiography (CTA) can help visualize structures and relationships not easily seen by echo. Using computer-aided design, we have the ability to create three-dimensional (3D) models of the intracardiac anatomy, which can be helpful for better depicting the overall anatomy to assist surgical pla
