Association between intestinal parasitoses and nutritional status in 3-8-year-old children in northeast Thailand.

To assess the prevalence and species of intestinal parasitoses and to evaluate the effects of parasitic infections on the nutritional health of northeastern Thai children a survey was carried out among 343 urban and rural 3-8-year-olds in Sakon Nakhon province. Approximately 57% suffered from single or multiple helminthiasis (ancylostomiasis (AD), ascariasis (AL), opisthorchiasis (OV) and/or strongyloidiasis (SS)) and/or giardiasis (GL). In rural areas the prevalence of AD and SS was higher than in urban areas (p less than 0.01 and p less than 0.05 respectively). OV was found more frequently a…

Anthelmintic Resistance in Ancylostoma caninum: A Comprehensive Review.

Ancylostoma caninum, a zoonotic hookworm species, significantly affects the global health of companion animals, humans and wildlife populations. This parasitic infection is prevalent in various environments, particularly in regions with warm climates, and affects a wide range of canids, including dogs, where it is most commonly found. A. caninum is a major concern not only due to its zoonotic potential but also because of its growing resistance to anthelmintic treatments. The development of resistance in parasitic species is primarily driven by genetic mutations that allow the parasite to surv

Changes in biochemical analytes in female dogs with subclinical Ancylostoma spp. infection.

BACKGROUND: Ancylostoma spp. is one of the most prevalent canine intestinal nematode infections which usually causes subclinical disease in adult dogs and has zoonotic implications. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore and evaluate the possible pathophysiological changes that Ancylostoma spp. could produce in female dogs naturally infected but without clinical signs of disease, by screening a wide variety of biochemical markers for potential changes. Samples of feces and blood of 45 dogs were collected and fecal flotation and zinc sulphate centrifugal flotation were performed. The b

Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a re-emerging but neglected parasitic zoonosis.

Although Ancylostoma ceylanicum is known to be an endemic and widely distributed hookworm of dogs and cats in Asia, its contribution to human morbidity as a potentially zoonotic hookworm remains largely unexplored. Since its discovery by Lane (1913) as a 'new parasite' of humans a century ago, the hookworm has been regarded as a 'rare' and 'abnormal' parasite and largely overlooked in surveys of human parasites. Recent molecular-based surveys in Asia, however, have demonstrated that A. ceylanicum is the second most common hookworm species infecting humans, comprising between 6% and 23% of tota

Density-dependent effects on establishment of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum.

The relationships between the number of infective larvae (L3s) to which animals were exposed and the establishment of A. ceylanicum and N. americanus in hamsters were examined. There was no evidence of density-dependent constraints on the establishment of A. ceylanicum in the range 10-1000 larvae, but an experiment in which the range was extended to 1500 L3s gave a significant negative correlation between the magnitude of the infecting dose and percentage establishment. Even so the percentage reduction was relatively small, approximating to 0.89% per 100 larvae administered, and in practice de

Efficacy of ivermectin in hookworms as examined in Ancylostoma caninum infections.

Single oral doses of ivermectin were given to dogs with moderate or heavy infections of Ancylostoma caninum (egg counts ranging from 7,100 to 41,700 eggs/g feces) at 100, 50, 30, or 10 micrograms/kg body weight. Each of these dosages was effective in clearing the infection completely, so that numerous worms were passed in the feces on days 1-3, but no worm was recovered from the intestinal tract at necropsy on day 4 after treatment. In contrast, an average of 178 worms per dog was recovered at necropsy from the vehicle-treated control and the untreated animals. Albendazole, a known anti-hookwo

Efficacy of various anthelmintics against third-stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum in the brain of mice.

In an experimental larval infection of Ancylostoma caninum in mice, the efficacy of various anthelmintics against the larvae migrated and established in the brain is reported for the first time. Albendazole and flubendazole were the most effective drugs. Thiabendazole, benacil, phenacizole, oxfendazole and mebendazole showed significant larvicidal activity. Tetramisole, levamisole, fenbendazole, Sch 18099, pyrantel pamoate, morantel tartrate and oxantel pamoate did not show any significant activity even at relatively high dose levels.

Infectivity of Ancylostoma caninum in dogs by different routes of inoculation.

Infectivity of A. caninum in dogs inoculated with 500 larvae by different routes (percutaneous, subcutaneous, intravenous, per os, through a stomach tube and foot pad) was studied by ascertaining the worm burden at necropsy 21-27 days post-infection. Infection through foot-pads yielded the maximum number of worms. The percentage of worm establishment using foot-pad inoculation was 73.8%, followed by subcutaneous (49.0%), percutaneous (45.0%) and per os (35.0%) routes. These results show that active penetration of the larvae through skin and particularly foot-pad is the most favourable mode of

Hookworm in dogs and cats in the area of Jakarta.

An investigation of the distribution and prevalence of hookworms in dogs and cats was carried out during the year 1976 in the area of Jakarta. Sixty-eight percent of the dogs harboured A. caninum, whereas 37% harboured A. ceylanicum and 18% A. braziliense and 32.1% as A. ceylanicum. Hookworms were recovered from 78% of the fifty cats; 72% of the cats were infected with A. braziliense and 24% with A.ceylanicum. Among the 1895 hookworms in cats, 73,5% were A. braziliense and 24.5% were A. ceylanicum. Only one female A. tubaeforme was found in one cat.

The efficacy of anthelmintics against third stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum in Mastomys natalensis.

Investigations have been carried out on the multimammate rat (Mastomys natalensis), orally infected with 1000 third stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum per animal, to evaluate the larvicidal efficacy of anthelmintics in this paratenic host. The oral or subcutaneous administration of 19 anthelmintics and filaricides revealed good activity for levamisole, cambendazole, and mebendazole against 15-day-old Ancylostoma larvae which were located in the muscular tissue. Similarly, good results were obtained with levamisole and cambendazole against the migrating third stage larvae, by treatment two to
