OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of anaemia in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 89 patients who fulfilled American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for RA were included in this study. The mean disease duration was 10.9±8.8 years. All patients received methotrexate (10.5±5.5 mg/week) in combination with folic acid. Steroid hormones were prescribed to 92% (19.3±3.8 mg/day) of patients. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and levels of hemoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) we

Anemia is characterized by a reduced count of red blood cells and/or low hemoglobin content in blood. The article reviews basic information on pathogenesis, differential diagnosis and treatment of anemia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anemia in this case is characterized as anemia of a chronic disease. Strong evidence is presented on effective treatment of anemia in RA patients with tocilizumab both in combination with methotrexate and other basic anti-inflammatory drugs and monotherapy in a dose 8 mg/kg.

INTRODUCTION: Posttransplant anemia (PTA) involves many factors. Although the link between the hemoglobin (Hb) levels and renal function is known, the relationship between proteinuria and PTA hemoglobin has not been widely explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether proteinuria was a predictor of anemia and whether erythropoietin-stimulating agent therapy was a protective factor for kidney damage among transplantation patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined 144 kidney transplant recipients of mean age 44.4 ± 12.3 years and a mean follow-up period of 40.5 ± 4.6 months. Exclu…

Pernicious anemia is a macrocytic anemia due to cobalamin deficiency, which is the result of intrinsic factor deficiency. Pernicious anemia is associated with atrophic body gastritis, whose diagnostic criteria are based on the histologic evidence of gastric body atrophy associated with hypochlorhydria. Serological markers suggesting the presence of oxyntic mucosa damage are increased levels of fasting gastrin and decreased levels of Pepsinogen I. Without the now obsolete Schilling's test, intrinsic factor deficiency may not be proven, and gastric intrinsic factor output after pentagastric stim…

Anemia is a frequent finding in most diseases which cause malabsorption. The most frequent etiology is the combination of iron and vitamin B12 deficiency. Celiac disease is frequently diagnosed in patients referred for evaluation of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), being reported in 1.8%-14.6% of patients. Therefore, duodenal biopsies should be taken during endoscopy if no obvious cause of iron deficiency (ID) can be found. Cobalamin deficiency occurs frequently among elderly patients, but it is often unrecognized because the clinical manifestations are subtle; it is caused primarily by food-coba…

Infection is a major cause of death in patients with aplastic anemia (AA). There are differences between the immunocompromised state of a patient with AA and the patient who is neutropenic due to chemotherapy and this leads to a difference in the infections that they incur. Prolonged neutropenia is one of the largest risk factors for the development of infections with the invasive mycoses and bacteria. Recovery from neutropenia is directly related to survival, and supportive care plays a large role in protection while the patient is in a neutropenic state. The most common invasive mycoses incl…

ESA therapy is commonly initiated when the Hgb is less than 11 g/dL. The shared hope and expectation as we partner with patients and their families in the plan of care is that the way to attain intended outcomes will be clear and involve no mystery. It can be surprising and challenging when those outcomes are not easily met. Mr. I achieved the targets for TSAS and ferritin levels, and both he and his significant other demonstrated knowledge about anemia and its ramifications and skill in the administration of the ESA. However, during the time he was enrolled in the CKD anemia management progra…

AIMS: Anemia is commonly observed among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). No such information is available for patients with a history of systemic vasculitis.
METHODS: We examined the prevalence of anemia, the response to therapy with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA), and the association of anemia with the kidney function in clinically stable patients with Wegener's granulomatosis in a retrospective, single-center study.
RESULTS: The mean hemoglobin concentration of 36 patients (mean age: 58 years; 15 female, 21 male; mean duration of disease: 4.6 years) was 13.0+/-2.1 g/dl,…

INTRODUCTION: Anemia is more common and pronounced in patients with diabetic, than in patients with non-diabetic renal disease. While several factors contribute to its pathogenesis, the failure of the kidney to increase erythropoietin in response to falling hemoglobin appears to be the dominant factor. The most frequent complications of anemia in diabetic patients include decreased quality of life and work capacity and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional multicenter study included a total of 539 patients with type I (approximately 20%) …

Anemia is a significant public health problem in Vietnam, but representative national data and comprehensive risk factors analysis are lacking. The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the distribution and severity of anemia in Vietnam, and 2) to assess potential risk factors for anemia. Nine thousand five hundred fifty households in 53 provinces were covered using a stratified two-stage cluster survey carried out in 1995. Selected household members were interviewed; intestinal helminthes were tested in non-pregnant women by Kato-Katz technique; hemoglobin concentrations were measure…

OBJECTIVE: To present a review about the main determining factors of anemia in children under 5 years old.
SOURCE OF DATA: Information was used from articles published in indexed national and international scientific journals, technical books and publications from international organizations.
SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Anemia constitutes the world's nutritional problem of the greater magnitude, and children under 5 years old represent one of the highest risk population groups. As with any public health problem, the origin of anemia is multi-causal and thus in this article the attempt is to int…

The sideroblastic anemias are a heterogeneous group of acquired and inherited bone marrow disorders defined by the presence of pathologic iron deposits in erythroblast mitochondria. While the pathogenesis of almost all cases of acquired sideroblastic anemia is unknown, the molecular genetic basis for several of the inherited forms have now been described. Initially, mutations in ALAS2 in X-linked sideroblastic anemia (XLSA) focused attention on the heme biosynthetic pathway as a primary cause of sideroblastic anemia. However, the subsequent description of the genes involved in XLSA with ataxia…

The transition of childhood to adulthood includes many changes to nearly all parts of the body and that is certainly true of blood and the coagulation system. Some disorders, like iron deficiency anemia, develop as the result of rapid growth. Approximately 10% of American adolescents are anemic and the prevalence is far greater in high-risk populations, such as urban, indigent African-American adolescents, in which 40-50% of young women are anemic. Adolescents at greater-than-average risk for developing iron deficiency anemia, such as athletes involved in lengthy, intense physical activities a…

The anemia found in patients with chronic infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic disorders, known as the anemia of chronic disease (ACD), is one of the most common syndromes in medicine. A characteristic finding of the disorders associated with ACD is increased production of the cytokines that mediate the immune or inflammatory response, such as tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1, and the interferons. All the processes involved in the development of ACD can be attributed to these cytokines, including shortened red cell survival, blunted erythropoietin response to anemia, impaired erythroid…

Although anemia is one of the signs of colorectal cancer, the relationships between histological findings and hematological findings other than hemoglobin level have not been adequately investigated. We investigated the relationship between hematological findings, serum iron, and histological findings in 358 patients (207 men and 157 women) with colorectal cancer. Their mean (+/-SD) ages were 64.3 +/- 12.4 and 63.8 +/- 13.3 years. A hemoglobin level of less than 10 g/dl was the criterion for anemia, and 20.8% of the men and 25.8% of the women met this criterion. Univariate analysis showed that…
