[The effect of the anthelmintics biltricide and chloxyl on the level of cellular and humoral immunity in patients with chronic opisthorchiasis].

The effect of two anthelmintics--biltricide and chloxyl--on the immune status has been compared in patients with chronic opisthorchiasis. It has been established that in using chloxyl there is a more marked and persistent imbalance of immunoregulatory T-lymphocyte subpopulations (T mu-helpers-inducers and T gamma-suppressors-effectors).

[Morphofunctional changes in the digestive system of the nematode Passalurus ambiguus (Rudolphi, 1819) after use of the anthelmintics albendazole, fenbendazole, and ivermectin].

The paper presents the results of histological and electron microscopic studies of the tissues of the digestive system of the nematode Passalurus ambiguus (Rudolphi, 1819) after use of the anthelminthics albendazole, fenbendazole, and ivermectine. They demonstrate that albendazole and fenbendazole cause irreversible structural changes. Less pronounced destruction of different parts of the digestive system occurs after the use of ivermectine. All the drugs affect the mid-gut of Passalurus.

In vitro in-depth characterization of emodepside in combination with key anthelmintic drugs on soil-transmitted helminths.

Despite the enormous disease burden, treatments are limited for soil-transmitted helminthiasis. The handful of anthelmintic drugs suffer from variable and often insufficient efficacy against the pathogens. Resistance development, caused by high drug pressure, is an ongoing concern. New treatments are needed, and combination therapies may represent a promising therapeutic strategy. We explored emodepside as a partner in combination therapy and characterized drug-interaction effects with key anthelmintics in vitro against different soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). Drug-interaction studies were…

Anthelmintic Effect of Chitosan-Encapsulated Bromelain on Gastrointestinal Nematodes in Naturally Infected Goats in Kenya.

The emergence of anthelmintic resistance calls for the development of alternatives, including medicinal plant extracts. The present study was aimed at assessing the efficacy of chitosan-encapsulated bromelain (EB) as an oral solution drug against GIN in goats. Standard methods were followed to extract bromelain from the pineapple peels and the conventional manufacturing procedure used to make an oral solution of EB. The in vivo study was performed on 20 healthy male goats that were naturally infected with GIN. The goats were randomly divided into four groups, each of which consisted of three t

Pharmacokinetics of fenbendazole and its bioactive metabolite oxfendazole in northern bobwhite administered an anthelmintic feed.

The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has experienced significant population declines across its native range. Parasitic nematodes are increasingly being recognized as contributing factors. QuailGuard®, an anthelmintic feed that uses fenbendazole (FBZ) as the active ingredient, has shown promise in field studies for reducing parasite loads in wild quail. However, little is known about the pharmacokinetics of FBZ in bobwhite, limiting accurate assessments of therapeutic exposure. This study investigated the pharmacokinetic profile of FBZ and its bioactive metabolite, oxfendazole (OFZ), in

Anthelmintic Activity of Protocatechuic Acid Against Ivermectin-Susceptible and Resistant Haemonchus contortus Strains.

The frequent and indiscriminate use of all classes of synthetic anthelmintics to deworm small ruminants has decreased their effectiveness in a worldwide problem of anthelmintic resistance. Using active plant metabolites with anthelmintic properties has become a suggested alternative to control parasitic helminths. The present study investigated the ovicidal and larvicidal activity of a fraction (CnF4) containing protocatechuic acid (3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid) from Chamaecrista nictitans (Fabaceae) and a commercial standard of protocatechuic acid against strains of the parasitic nematode Haemon…

Preliminary survey of anthelmintic efficacy in selected smallholder sheep and goat flocks in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Smallholder sheep and goat production supports rural livelihoods and food security through the provision of meat, milk, hides and skins, employment, and household income in Malaysia. The control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in sheep and goats relies on routine deworming using albendazole, levamisole, and ivermectin anthelmintics. While these drugs are effective in reducing worm burden and improving animal productivity, prolonged and often indiscriminate use resulted in the emergence of anthelmintic resistance (AHR) in West Malaysia. Despite extensive evidence of AHR in GINs of sheep an…

Competition moderates impact of anthelmintic-contaminated soil on growth and fitness of temperate grassland species.

In animal husbandry, the macrocyclic lactone anthelmintic moxidectin is commonly used and may accumulate in pasture soils, potentially impacting plant growth and fitness. To investigate these effects while considering plant competition, we conducted a completely randomised pot experiment. We grew four temperate grassland species - Achillea ptarmica, Agrostis capillaris, Dianthus deltoides, and Plantago lanceolata - separately in pots, with soil treated with formulated moxidectin at three concentration levels (0.1, 1, 5 μg g-1) or left untreated (control). In half of the pots, we added the domi

ILC3s promote intestinal tuft cell hyperplasia and anthelmintic immunity through RANK signaling.

Helminth infections, particularly in developing countries, remain a notable health burden worldwide. Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are enriched in the intestine and play a critical role in immunity against extracellular bacteria and fungi. However, whether ILC3s are involved in intestinal helminth infection is still unclear. Here, we report that helminth infection reprograms ILC3s, which, in turn, promote anthelmintic immunity. ILC3-derived RANKL [receptor activator of NF-κB (nuclear factor κB) ligand] synergizes with interleukin-13 (IL-13) to facilitate intestinal tuft cell expansion
