A rare report on 18-month survival of a dog born with multiple anomalies including atresia ani.

Long term survival of animals with major congenital anomalies is very rare. This report documents the 18-month survival of a dog with multiple anomalies including atresia ani. An 18-month-old black Cocker Spaniel bitch was presented for evaluation of prolapsed glands of the third eyelid involving both the eyes. Clinical examination revealed a single perineal opening, fecal matter in the vestibule, distended abdomen, hypoplastic vulva, and the absence of a tail without any neurological deficits. Abdominal contrast radiography revealed a distended colon with fecal stasis, rectovestibular fistula

Wide variation in anal sphincter muscles in cases of high- and intermediate-type male anorectal malformation.

PURPOSE: The distribution of sphincter muscle complex in anorectal malformation (ARM) needs to be investigated on a case-by-case basis. This study was undertaken to demonstrate the differences in the anal sphincter muscles between patients with the same type of ARM. Computed tomography (CT) data from cases of high- and intermediate-type male patients with ARM were reviewed using three-dimensional (3D) image analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven male patients with ARM (18 high and 9 intermediate) before anorectoplasty were assessed using multidetector-row helical CT (MRH-CT). A 3D reco

Congenital pouch colon: an unusual case report.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital pouch colon (CPC) is a rare malformation. It causes variable dilatation of the colon associated with anorectal malformation (ARM), usually presenting a fistula towards the genitourinary tract. CASE REPORT: 2-day-old female patient, with no relevant medical history. She had abdominal distension and imperforate anus. She underwent colostomy. She had an irregular evolution with high colostomy debits. Contrast imaging studies were performed, which demonstrated an erroneous exteriorization of the jejunal loop. She underwent an exploratory open surgery, which confirmed the

The Challenges of the European Anorectal Malformations-Net Registry.

Anorectal malformations (ARM) have a low prevalence, patients need specialized surgical care, and in many cases, patients born with ARM even need life-long aftercare. Due to its low prevalence most patients are still treated in low-volume pediatric surgical centers without any adequate monitoring of the outcome. Data on prevalence, comparison of different surgical techniques, and prospective outcome measurements are still scarce and difficult to interpret. In 2010, a consortium was founded (ARM-Net consortium) including several European pediatric surgical centers to collaborate more in researc

Rectal atresia: a rare cause of failure to pass meconium.

Rectal atresia or stenosis is an extremely rare anorectal malformation associating a normal anal canal with a stricture or a complete rectal atresia. We describe a case of rectal atresia in a newborn female presenting with an abdominal distension and failure of passing meconium.

Genetic and nongenetic etiology of nonsyndromic anorectal malformations: a systematic review.

Congenital anorectal malformations (ARMs) are one of the most frequently observed birth defects of the digestive system. However, their etiology remains elusive. Therefore, we aim to summarize and critically appraise all existing literature on the genetic and nongenetic etiology of nonsyndromic ARM and to conclude with unifying hypotheses and directions for future research. A structured literature search on English language human studies was conducted in PubMed and Embase up to October 1, 2013, resulting in 112 included articles. Research on the identification of genes underlying nonsyndromic
