Language and phonological skills in children at high risk of reading difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is now generally acknowledged to involve difficulties in phonological processing. However, the links between reading difficulties and speech difficulties remain unclear. METHOD: In the present study, 17 children with speech difficulties between the ages of four and six were compared to children with a family history of dyslexia and normally developing controls on phonological processing, phonological learning, phonological awareness and literacy tasks. RESULTS: The two groups of children at risk of reading difficulties showed very similar patterns of impairment, with ave

Developmental reading disorder: predictors of outcome in adolescents who received early diagnosis and treatment.

In this study of the course of developmental reading disorder, 40 Caucasian children, who were diagnosed and began reading therapy at 7-years-old were followed-up at 14-years-old. A variety of methodological concerns were addressed by careful screening of the subjects, by attempting to include a representative population, by comparing standardized measures statistically at initial and follow-up testing, and by using a homogeneously delayed population. It was found that 40% of the subjects were reading appropriately at follow-up. Improvement and recovery were significantly related to parents' e

Management of non-progressive dysarthria: practice patterns of speech and language therapists in the Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a commonly acquired speech disorder. Rising numbers of people surviving stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) mean the numbers of people with non-progressive dysarthria are likely to increase, with increased challenges for speech and language therapists (SLTs), service providers and key stakeholders. The evidence base for assessment and intervention approaches with this population remains limited with clinical guidelines relying largely on clinical experience, expert opinion and limited research. Furthermore, there is currently little evidence on the practice behavi

The Natural Evolution of Macroglossia Among Beckwith-Wiedemann Patients: A 30-Year Institutional Review.

BACKGROUND: Macroglossia is a hallmark of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). Tongue reduction surgery is classically performed to address such issues, but its necessity in patients without airway or feeding compromise remains debated. This study evaluates long-term outcomes of conservative management. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with BWS seen from 1993 to 2023 was performed. Data collected included demographics, comorbidities, occlusion, cephalometrics, and speech outcomes. Dental and dento-skeletal measures were compared with age- and sex-matched standards. RESULTS: Of 59 pa

Potential Uses of Venom Proteins in Treatment of HIV.

BACKGROUND: For about 30 years Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been a significant social and health issue. It has been a perilous opponent in the human contest against HIV. At the end of 2015 there were 26.7 million people worldwide who were affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and this number is expected to increase. Unfortunately, currently there are no vaccines available for prevention and control of HIV. The global burden of HIV articulates the need for anti-HIV therapeutic factors. Venom toxins are commonly prescribed for treatment of various medical disorders. Honey

Teacher-identified oral language difficulties among boys with attention problems.

Teachers evaluated the language functioning of 95 boys, aged 6.5 to 13.8 years, identified as having attention problems (AP, n = 30), learning disability (LD, n = 33), or average achievement (AA, n = 32). The three groups did not differ significantly (p > .05) in their frequency of articulation problems. Significantly (p < .05) more AP boys were rated as having pragmatics problems than both of the other groups. AP boys were also viewed as having a higher frequency of receptive/expressive language problems than were AA boys, but not compared with LD boys. LD and AA boys did not differ in their

Exploring Motor Speech Disorders in Low and Minimally Verbal Autistic Individuals: An Auditory-Perceptual Analysis.

PURPOSE: Motor deficits are widely documented among autistic individuals, and speech characteristics consistent with a motor speech disorder have been reported in prior literature. We conducted an auditory-perceptual analysis of speech production skills in low and minimally verbal autistic individuals as a step toward clarifying the nature of speech production impairments in this population and the potential link between oromotor functioning and language development. METHOD: Fifty-four low or minimally verbal autistic individuals aged 4-18 years were video-recorded performing nonspeech oromot

Phonology in Swedish-speaking 3-year-olds born with cleft lip and palate and the relationship with consonant production at 18 months.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of children born with cleft palate present speech difficulties around 3 years of age, and several studies report on persisting phonological problems after palatal closure. However, studies on early phonology related to cleft palate are few and have so far mainly been carried out on English-speaking children. Studies on phonology related to cleft palate in languages other than English are also warranted. AIMS: To assess phonology in Swedish-speaking children born with and without unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) at 3 years of age, and to identify variables a

Verbal working memory and story retelling in school-age children with autism.

PURPOSE: This study examined verbal working memory and language ability in 15 school-age children with autism using 3 verbal working memory tasks and 1 story recall task. METHOD: Three measures of verbal working memory--nonword repetition, memory for digits span, and sentence imitation--were given to children with autism and age-matched controls. Verbal working memory measures were chosen to reflect increasing levels of cognitive-linguistic complexity. Story retelling was measured using The Renfrew Bus Story (J. Cowley & C. Glasgow, 1994) and was scored for the percentage of propositions reca

The influence of premorbid language skills and behavior on language recovery in children with verbal auditory agnosia.

Previous studies of children with Landau-Kleffner syndrome and related language-epilepsy syndromes have focused on the relationship of seizure control to language recovery. We examined the effect of premorbid language skills and behavior, as well as some characteristics of clinical seizures and electroencephalograms, on language recovery in a retrospective study of 67 children with the severe receptive and expressive language disorder, verbal auditory agnosia. Fifty-eight percent of these children had seizures, 76% were autistic, and 24% had a history of language regression after showing previ

Articulation in postoperative patients treated for early- and advanced-stage tongue cancer.

Tongue cancer is among the most prevalent head and neck cancers and is most commonly treated via surgery. We assessed the articulation differences in patients with early and advanced tongue cancer. The study included 26 postoperative tongue cancer patients. We evaluated articulation based on bilabial, labiodental, apical, posterior, laminal, apical front, and apical back speech sounds. The 26 postoperative tongue cancer patients (24 males, two females) had an average age of 54.3 (range 37-89 old) years. Twelve patients were classified as early T stage (T1/T2), while 14 were classified as advan

Production of two Nasal Sounds by Speakers with Cleft Palate.

Many speakers with cleft palate develop atypical consonant productions, especially for pressure consonants such as plosives, fricatives, and affricates. The present study investigated the nature of nasal sound errors. The participants were eight female and three male speakers with cleft palate between the ages of 6 to 20. Speakers were audio-recorded, and midsagittal tongue movement was captured with ultrasound. The speakers repeated vowel-consonant-vowel with the vowels /α/, /i/, and /u/ and the alveolar and velar nasal consonants /n/ and /η/. The productions were reviewed by three listeners.

Are RAN deficits in university students with dyslexia due to defective lexical access, impaired anchoring, or slow articulation?

The purpose of this study was to examine different hypotheses in relation to RAN deficits in dyslexia. Thirty university students with dyslexia and 32 chronological-age controls were assessed on RAN Digits and Colors as well as on two versions of RAN Letters and Objects (one with five items repeated 16 times and one with 20 items repeated four times). In addition, participants were tested on discrete letter and object naming, phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, and speed of processing, and the RAN Letters and Objects total times were partitioned into pause times and articulation ti

Lingual frenulum: changes after frenectomy.

PURPOSE: To describe the changes after frenectomy concerning mobility and functions of the tongue. METHODS: Participants were 53 subjects who had never undergone speech therapy or lingual frenulum surgery. A specific lingual frenulum protocol with scores was used by speech-language pathologists when there was evidence of frenulum alteration. Ten subjects had abnormal frenulum and were referred to an otolaryngologist for frenectomy. After surgery, the subjects were re-evaluated using the same protocol. Photos and videos were taken for comparison. RESULTS: Thirty days after surgery, the subjec

An electrophysiological investigation of semantic and phonological processing in skilled and less-skilled comprehenders.

The most prominent theories of reading consider reading comprehension ability to be a direct consequence of lower-level reading skills. Recently however, research has shown that some children with poor comprehension ability perform normally on tests of lower-level skills (e.g., decoding). One promising line of behavioral research has found semantic processing differences between good and poor comprehenders and suggests that impoverished semantic ability may be linked to poor comprehenders' difficulties. In the current study, we used event related potentials (ERP) to compare adult skilled and l

[Tongue mobility in ankyloglossia with regard to articulation].

A sound is created as a result of several breathing, phonetic and articulation positions and movements which take place in the articulation system consisting of both mobile and immobile elements. The tongue is one of the mobile elements of the articulation system. Full range of tongue mobility is required to form sounds correctly. If mobility of the tongue is reduced, sounds may slightly, moderately or highly deviate from proper ones. Serious deviations in articulate structure of sounds (such as non-vibrating front part of the tongue in the /r/ phoneme) are easy to notice since they change pho

The representation of articulation in the primary sensorimotor cortex.

Bilabial, alveolar and velar sounds are produced at different locations around the oral cavity. fMRI was used to localize cortical representation of articulation in seven healthy subjects during repetitive lip and vertical tongue movements as well as repetitive articulation of /pa/ (bilabial), /ta/ (alveolar), /ka/ (velar consonants) and a combination of all three in /pataka/. Centers of gravity (COG) analysis of fMRI activation in the primary motor (M1) and sensory cortex (S1) revealed /pa/- adjacent to lip representation and /ta/- articulation to tongue representation.
