BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Atropine dilates the pupil and paralyzes the ciliary muscle accommodation, blurring vision, and therefore is an effective penalization of the sound eye in the treatment of functional amblyopia of the other eye. The degree of blur induced is a function of the amount of the patient's uncorrected hyperopia and the distance from the eye of the viewed material or object. Another factor determining effectiveness of atropine penalization is the duration of the effect of the atropine. It is the purpose of this study to investigate these factors.

The purpose of this study was to establish the safety of high-dose dobutamine-atropine stress echocardiography in patients with suspected or proven coronary artery disease. Six hundred fifty consecutive examinations were completed. Mean age of patients was 61 years; 300 had a previous myocardial infarction. The potential subchronic (21 days) toxicity of inhaled metered aerosol formulations (solution and suspension) of atropine sulfate was investigated in rats and dogs. The doses administered to rats were 0.78 and 2.5 mg/kg/day (solution) or 1.4 and 3.2 mg/kg/day (suspension). The neuropharmacological mechanisms involved in the prandial drinking pattern seen in rats with superior salivatory nucleus lesions + parotidectomy were investigated with behavioral methods. Results showed that the administration of low doses (0.1 mg/kg body wt) of atropine in lesioned rats potentiated previously established prandial drinking. The effects of pirenzepine on carbamylcholine-stimulated exocrine and endocrine pancreatic functions were compared with those of atropine in both the isolated pancreatic acini and the isolated perfused pancreas of rats. Heart rate, demeanor, and facial flushing following intramuscular injection of atropine or glycopyrrolate were compared in 80 paediatric patients under 1 year of age. No significant differences occurred between the two drugs in the doses used. Plasma vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was measured in six healthy male students on 2 separate days after insulin-induced hypoglycemia with and without atropine and on a 3rd day in five of the students after atropine alone.
