Influence of preoperative voice assessment on treatment plan prior to airway surgery.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Voice quality has emerged as an additional long-term outcome measure for patients with a history of airway surgery. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of preoperative voice assessment on the surgical management of patients who required complex airway surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: We analyzed clinical data for all patients who underwent an airway reconstruction procedure from September 1, 2012 to September 1, 2017 and had a voice clinic evaluation prior to surgery at a tertiary-care pediatric hospital. Each participant underwe

[Hearing loss, disorders of sound localization with the preservation ofsmell and taste in diabetics].

Diabetes is often complicated by serious medical conditions which could be related to the development of auditory system and cranial nerves lesions, disorder of sound localisation and decreased olfactory and taste ability. Cranial nerve palsies in diabetes are considered as an integral part of the main disease. Twenty nine children with diabetes and non-diabetics control group, without a history of exposure to noise, ototoxic drugs, or ear disease aged 4-19 years old were examined. Hearing impairment may be present in children with disease duration above 3-5 years and in children with other co

The Effectiveness of Eclectic Voice Therapy on Multidimensional Voice Parameters in Patients with Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia.

BACKGROUND: Primary muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a functional voice disorder characterized by excessive laryngeal muscle tension, resulting in various voice quality impairments and associated symptoms. While voice therapy is recognized as the primary treatment approach, there remains limited evidence regarding the multidimensional effects of eclectic therapeutic interventions combining multiple evidence-based techniques. AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of eclectic voice therapy on acoustic, aerodynamic, auditory-perceptual, and self-assessment voice parameters in patients diagnosed

Minimal Detectable Change of Experienced and Novice Listeners' Ratings of Overall Severity of Voice Quality.

OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose of this study was to determine the minimal detectable change (MDC) scores-defined as the smallest amount of change greater than measurement error-for experienced and novice listeners' ratings of overall severity of voice quality for speakers with and without voice disorders. A secondary purpose was to determine the MDC scores as a function of speaker severity and listener experience. METHODS: Ten experienced listeners (ELs) and 10 novice listeners (NLs) rated overall severity of voice quality in 41 speakers with voice disorders and nine without voice disorders

Multisensory dysfunction across sleep disorders: A systematic review of 31 human modalities.

Sleep disorders are increasingly understood as systems-level conditions in which the brain and body reweight sensory evidence from the external world and internal milieu. We systematically reviewed human evidence for sensory and multisensory dysfunction across sleep disorders and experimental sleep loss. Searches identified 25,777 records; after removal of 7235 duplicates, 18,542 records were screened, 4452 full records were assessed for eligibility, and 377 studies met inclusion criteria. Evidence was organised across 31 sensory modalities in seven domains: olfaction, gustation, vision, audit

The relationship between phonological processing skills and word and nonword identification performance in children with mild intellectual disabilities.

Word and nonword identification skills were examined in a sample of 80 elementary school age students with mild intellectual disabilities and mixed etiologies who were described as struggling to learn to read by their teachers. Performance on measures of receptive and expressive vocabulary, measures of phonological awareness, and measures of word and nonword identification were included for analyses. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that, after controlling for chronological age and vocabulary knowledge, phonological processing accounted for a large and significant amount of unique va

[Identification of auditory laterality by means of a new dichotic digit test in Spanish, and body laterality and spatial orientation in children with dyslexia and in controls].

INTRODUCTION: In this study, a new dichotic digit test in Spanish (NDDTS) was applied in order to identify auditory laterality. We also evaluated body laterality and spatial location using the Subirana test. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Both the dichotic test and the Subirana test for body laterality and spatial location were applied in a group of 40 children with dyslexia and in a control group made up of 40 children who were paired according to age and gender. The results of the three evaluations were analysed using the SPSS 10 software application, with Pearson's chi-squared test. RESULTS: It wa

Engagement of brain areas implicated in processing inner speech in people with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: The neurocognitive basis of auditory hallucinations is unclear, but there is increasing evidence implicating abnormalities in processing inner speech. Previous studies have shown that people with schizophrenia who were prone to auditory hallucinations demonstrated attenuated activation of brain areas during the monitoring of inner speech. AIMS: To investigate whether the same pattern of functional abnormalities would be evident as the rate of inner speech production was varied. METHOD: Eight people with schizophrenia who had a history of prominent auditory hallucinations and eigh

"Just right" perceptions associated with compulsive behavior in Tourette's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette's syndrome is a chronic disorder of childhood onset that is characterized by motor and phonic tics and a broad range of associated behavior including obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Less well appreciated are the sensory and other perceptually tinged mental phenomena associated with both tic and compulsive behavior. This cross-sectional study evaluated the "just-right" phenomena commonly associated with compulsive behavior in subjects with tic disorders. METHOD: A total of 134 subjects with tic disorders, aged 9 to 71 years, completed a questionnaire concerning their current

Perceptual Adaptation of Lexical Tones Is Degraded but Can Be Improved With Lengthened Stimulus Duration in Musically Tone-Deaf Individuals.

PURPOSE: The current study investigated how individuals with congenital amusia (or "tone deafness") responded to lexical tones differed in stimulus duration and carried by distinct syllables. METHOD: Amusics were diagnosed to develop the experimental group to participate in an identification task and a discrimination task, with typical, musically intact listeners being the control group. The test stimuli were actual monosyllabic words in Mandarin Chinese, and they varied in stimulus duration (100 and 400 ms) and were presented in the low- and the high-variability conditions (the tone carried

Focal Brain Lesions Causing Acquired Amusia Map to a Common Brain Network.

Music is a universal human attribute. The study of amusia, a neurologic music processing deficit, has increasingly elaborated our view on the neural organization of the musical brain. However, lesions causing amusia occur in multiple brain locations and often also cause aphasia, leaving the distinct neural networks for amusia unclear. Here, we utilized lesion network mapping to identify these networks. A systematic literature search was carried out to identify all published case reports of lesion-induced amusia. The reproducibility and specificity of the identified amusia network were then tes

[Two cases of auditory disturbance caused by carbamazepine].

Two cases of auditory disturbance caused by carbamazepine are reported. Patient 1, a 9-year-old boy with benign Rolandic epilepsy, developed impairment of pitch perception one day after administration of carbamazepine. Patient 2, a 33-year-old female with glossopharyngeal neuralgia, developed impairment of pitch perception several hours after administration of carbamazepine, complaining that the perceived sounds became lower than previously by a semitone. Her pitch perception recovered soon after the cessation of carbamazepine. The carbamazepine-induced disturbance in pitch perception may be m

Complex syntax in autism spectrum disorders: a study of relative clauses.

BACKGROUND: The few studies that have evaluated syntax in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have yielded conflicting findings: some suggest that once matched on mental age, ASD and typically developing controls do not differ for grammar, while others report that morphosyntactic deficits are independent of cognitive skills in ASD. There is a need for a better understanding of syntax in ASD and its relation to, or dissociation from, nonverbal abilities. AIMS: Syntax in ASD was assessed by evaluating subject and object relative clause comprehension in adolescents and adults diagnosed with ASD with

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Reading and/or Spelling Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: 3-11% of children and adolescents suffer from a reading andor spelling disorder. Their poor written-language skills markedly impair their scholastic performance and are often associated with other mental disorders. A great deal of uncertainty still surrounds the question of the appropriate methods of diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: We systematically searched for pertinent publications in databases and literature reference lists, summarized the evidence in six tables, and examined some of it in a meta-analysis. Recommendations were developed in a consensus conference. RESULTS: A

Impaired auditory selective attention ameliorated by cognitive training with graded exposure to noise in patients with traumatic brain injury.

Patients who suffer traumatic brain injury frequently report difficulty concentrating on tasks and completing routine activities in noisy and distracting environments. Such impairments can have long-term negative psychosocial consequences. A cognitive control function that may underlie this impairment is the capacity to select a goal-relevant signal for further processing while safeguarding it from irrelevant noise. A paradigmatic investigation of this problem was undertaken using a dichotic listening task (study 1) in which comprehension of a stream of speech to one ear was measured in the co

Comparison of auditory deficits associated with neglect and auditory cortex lesions.

In contrast to lesions of the visual and somatosensory cortex, lesions of the auditory cortex are not associated with self-evident contralesional deficits. Only when two or more stimuli are presented simultaneously to the left and right, contralesional extinction has been observed after unilateral lesions of the auditory cortex. Because auditory extinction is also considered a sign of neglect, clinical separation of auditory neglect from deficits caused by lesions of the auditory cortex is challenging. Here, we directly compared a number of tests previously used for either auditory-cortex lesi
