BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Since the beginning of the year 2020, the pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) impacted humankind adversely in almost all spheres of life. The virus belongs to the genus Betacoronavirus of the family Coronaviridae. SARS-CoV-2 causes the disease known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with mild-to-severe respiratory illness. The currently available diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of COVID-19 are mainly based on molecular assays. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction is the only diagnostic method curr

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity is of great relevance in Parkinson's disease (PD). It is part of the inpatient multimodal Parkinson's complex treatment (MKP) in Germany. However, there is often a lack of human resources in outpatient settings to continue an interprofessional approach. A large proportion of PD patients live a predominantly sedentary lifestyle and do not get enough exercise.
METHODS: The intervention group (IG) used a tablet-based physiotherapy training programme at home for a period of nine months. We conducted a quasi-randomised longitudinal study with three measurement

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an escalating health problem worldwide, and hence the causes underlying its development are of primary importance to public health. There is growing evidence that suboptimal intrauterine environment can perturb the metabolic programing of the growing fetus, thereby increasing the risk of developing obesity in later life. However, the link between early exposures in the womb, genetic susceptibility, and perturbed epigenome on metabolic health is not well understood. In this study, we shed more light on this aspect by performing a comprehensive analysis on the effects of v

BACKGROUND: Leydig cells (LC) are the sites of testicular androgen production. Development of LC occurs in the testes of most mammalian species as two distinct growth phases, i.e. as fetal and pubertal/adult populations. In primates there are indications of a third neonatal growth phase. LC androgen production begins in embryonic life and is crucial for the intrauterine masculinization of the male fetal genital tract and brain, and continues until birth after which it rapidly declines. A short post-natal phase of LC activity in primates (including human) termed 'mini-puberty' precedes the peri

BACKGROUND: The relatively common co-occurrence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease (CD) suggests these disorders share common pathogenic etiologies.
SUMMARY: T1D and CD are strongly linked to closely related high-risk human lymphocyte antigens (HLA-DR-DQ). High-risk HLA molecules bind specific fragments of gluten or the islet self-antigen(s) and present these antigens to antigen-responsive T cells. In an appropriate proinflammatory environment, the autoimmune response results in destruction of the intestinal enterocyte and/or the pancreatic beta cell. Environmental factors have been

BACKGROUND: IgA is the dominant antibody in the human gut and a key regulator of host-microbe interactions. Infants begin to produce IgA at around 6 months old and receive large quantities of IgA via human milk, but technical limitations have prevented species-level characterization of IgA binding in early life. This has left basic knowledge gaps about which species are targeted by IgA in infancy, and how modifiable lifestyle factors like breastfeeding and complementary feeding impact IgA targeting.
RESULTS: Here we adapt Metagenomic Immunoglobulin Sequencing (MIg-Seq) for low-biomass infant

The extensive use of pesticides has raised concerns about environmental contamination, which poses potential health risks to humans and aquatic life. Hence, the need for a healthy and friendly ecosystem initiated this study, which was modeled through profound density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP-D3(BJ)/def2svp level of theory to gain insights into the electronic characteristics of germanium-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ge@C3N4) engineered with nickel group transition metals (Ni, Pt, and Pd) as sensors for diazinon (DZN), an organophosphorus pesticide pollutant. With the development of existing surgical techniques, equipment and treatment concepts, more and more medical centers begin to carry out extensive resection for recurrent pelvic malignant tumors or those with multivisceral invasion. Exenteration may facilitate curative resection and improve the outcome of the patients. Therefore, pelvic exenteration has gradually become the standard of care for locally advanced pelvic malignancies. At present, pelvic exenteration leads to high intraoperative and postoperative complications and mortality, and therefore compromise the safety and long-term qualit

Vitamin D is a cyclopentane polyhydrophenanthrene compound involved mainly in bone health and calcium metabolism but also autophagy, modulation of the gut microbiota, cell proliferation, immune functions and intestinal barrier integrity. The sources of vitamin D include sunlight, diet and vitamin D supplements. Vitamin D3, the most effective vitamin D isoform is produced in the human epidermis as a result of sunlight exposure. Vitamin D undergoes two hydroxylation reactions in the liver and kidney to reach its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Recent studies highlighted a complex spectrum

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a common environmental toxicant linked with hypersensitivity and autoimmune responses in humans and animal models. While autoimmune diseases are more common in females, mechanisms behind this disparity are not clear. Recent evidence suggests that autoimmunity may be increasing in males, and occupational studies have shown that TCE-mediated hypersensitivity responses occur just as often in males. Previous experimental studies in autoimmune-prone MRL+/+ mice have focused on responses in females. However, it is important to include both males and females in order to bet

BACKGROUND: Intermittent administration of teriparatide, a drug composed of the first 34 amino acids of parathyroid hormone, has anabolic effects on bone. Although teriparatide has been evaluated for the treatment of osteoporosis and for the healing of fractures, clinical trials evaluating it for the treatment of osseous conditions of the oral cavity in humans are lacking.
METHODS: A total of 40 patients with severe, chronic periodontitis underwent periodontal surgery and received daily injections of teriparatide (20 μg) or placebo, along with oral calcium (1000 mg) and vitamin D (800 IU) sup

More recently, osteoporosis in men has been recognized as an important public health problem. Bone loss begins in mid life and is associated with the decline of the sex steroids production. Although there is no equivalent of the menopause, gonadal function in men is affected in a slow progressive way leading to hypogonadism. Testosterone, the major androgen in men, exerts its effect on bone by local conversion to 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone or by aromatization to estrogens. Several studies have found that estrogen, rather than testosterone, levels are more closely correlated with BMD in elderly

Strain differences in temperament and physiology have been reported for several animal species, but nonhuman primates have not been well studied in this regard. We assessed behavioral and physiology in Chinese-Indian hybrid (n = 13) and Indian-origin (n = 29) nursery-reared rhesus monkey infants. Previous data indicate that Chinese-origin and Chinese-Indian hybrid rhesus exhibit more aggression directed toward humans and conspecifics and are more irritable in response to neonatal assessment procedures than are Indian-derived rhesus. In addition, in rhesus adults, low levels of cerebrospinal fl

We have used immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization to examine the expression of photoreceptor specific genes in retinas of normal dogs and those affected with hereditary cone degeneration (cd), a rare autosomal recessive disorder that selectively affects cones. In the cd retina, cone disease begins early in life; cones are lost by extrusion of the nucleus into the inner segment, and later by displacement of the nucleus, surrounded by a thin rim of cytoplasm, into the interphotoreceptor space. Two micrometer sections from the superior and inferior retinal meridians, extending from the o

INCIDENCE: Cancer occurring between the ages of 15 and 30 years is 2.7 times more common than cancer occurring during the first 15 years of life, yet is much less common than cancer in older age groups, and accounts for just 2% of all invasive cancer. Cancer in adolescents and young adults is unique in the distribution of the types that occur. Hodgkin lymphoma, melanoma, testis cancer, female genital tract malignancies, thyroid cancer, soft-tissue sarcomas, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, brain and spinal cord tumors, breast cancer, bone sarcomas, and nongonadal germ cell tumors account for 95

Environmental enrichment is key for improving the broiler welfare in intensive production systems. This study lasted for 43 days and evaluated the effects of physical and social enrichment on broiler welfare. A total of 96 one-day-old male broilers were divided into two treatments: control treatment, provided with physical enrichment (n = 48) including perches, platforms, and straw bales; and social treatment (n = 48), involving regular positive interactions with a human. The behavioral repertoire, footpad health, taste preferences for sweet and umami compounds, affective states (through tonic

Interstitial cystitis (IC) presents as a chronic pain condition with variable combinations of symptoms depending on the species and individual patient. It is diagnosed by the presence of lower urinary tract signs and symptoms in combination with a variety of comorbid health problems, a history of life adversities, and the absence of other conditions that could cause the lower urinary tract signs. IC occurs naturally in humans and cats as a dimensional condition, with patients presenting with mild, moderate, and severe symptoms. Most patients appear to recover without specific treatment. Significant bowel-related issues after spinal cord injury (SCI) that affect morbidity and quality of life (QOL) include diminished bowel motility, loss of sphincter control, gastric ulcers, autonomic dysreflexia, pain, diarrhea, constipation, and fecal incontinence. Clinical diagnoses and research in humans have largely relied on anorectal manometry (ARM) procedures to increase understanding of the functional effects of SCI on colorectal motility and defecation physiology. Recent pre-clinical rodent studies have also used ARM to further our understanding of bowel-related dysfunctions post-SCI.

The mammalian skeleton is integral to whole body physiology with a multitude of functions beyond mechanical support and locomotion, including support of hematopoiesis, mineral homeostasis and potentially other endocrine roles. Formation of the skeleton begins in the embryo and mostly from a cartilage template that is ultimately replaced by bone through endochondrial ossification. Skeletal development and maturation continue after birth in most species and last into the second decade of postnatal life in humans. In the mature skeleton, articular cartilage lining the synovial joint surfaces is v

In humans, neurosecretory chromaffin cells control a number of important bodily functions, including those related to stress response. Chromaffin cells appear as a distinct cell type at the beginning of midgestation and are the main cellular source of adrenalin and noradrenalin released into the blood stream. In mammals, two different chromaffin organs emerge at a close distance to each other, the adrenal gland and Zuckerkandl organ (ZO). These two structures are found in close proximity to the kidneys and dorsal aorta, in a region where paraganglioma, pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma origin
