Low-Level Symptoms of Depression in Mothers of Young Children are Associated with Behavior Problems in Middle Childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Examine the association between mothers' low- and high-level depressive symptoms in early childhood and children's behavior problems in middle childhood. METHODS: We used data from 1844 families in a multi-site, longitudinal study beginning when children were 14 months and continuing to age 11 years. Children's internalizing and externalizing behavior problems at age 11 were assessed using the child behavior checklist for ages 6-18. Mothers' scores on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale when children were 14 months were used to classify them into three groups:

The impact of trauma on the onset of mental health symptoms, aggression, and criminal behavior in an inpatient psychiatric sample.

Experiences of trauma and maltreatment are frequent predictors of poor physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood. Existing literature also suggests an impact of developmental adversity on criminality and aggressive behavior, though little research exists describing the effects of cumulative adversity in forensic mental health samples. In the current study of 381 forensic mental health inpatients, rates of trauma, neglect, and parental substance abuse are reported in comparison with community norms. Cumulative adversity and the occurrence of foster care placement are examined via linear

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.

The effects of aggression on symptom severity and treatment response in a trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that patients with panic disorder exhibit higher levels of aggression than patients with other anxiety disorders. This aggression is associated with more severe symptomatology and interpersonal problems. However, few studies have examined whether higher levels of aggression are associated with a worse treatment response in this population. METHODS: The present study sought to examine the association of aggression with panic disorder symptom severity in a sample of 379 patients who participated in a trial examining long-term strategies for the treatment o

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and aggressive behavior among incarcerated methamphetamine users.

OBJECTIVE: Methamphetamine use remains a prevalent problem in the United States and is linked to numerous deleterious outcomes, including aggressive behavior, criminal activity, and incarceration. Given these associations, a greater understanding of factors that contribute to aggression among users of methamphetamine is needed, particularly within criminal justice settings, where users of this drug are overrepresented. METHODS: The present study examined the relationships between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and emotion dysregulation and in-prison physical aggression among in

A genetically informed test of cholesterol levels and self-control, depressive symptoms, antisocial behavior, and neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: Low cholesterol levels have been found to be associated with a wide range of behavioral problems, including violent and criminal behavior, and a wide range of psychological problems including impulsivity, depression, and other internalizing problems. The casual mechanisms underlying these associations remain largely unknown, but genetic factors may play a role in the etiology of such associations as previous research has found significant genetic influence on cholesterol levels and various deleterious behavioral and psychological outcomes. The current study addressed this existing

Rumination as a transdiagnostic factor underlying transitions between internalizing symptoms and aggressive behavior in early adolescents.

The high degree of comorbidity among mental disorders has generated interest in identifying transdiagnostic processes associated with multiple types of psychopathology. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema conceptualized rumination as one such transdiagnostic process associated with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, binge eating, and self-injurious behavior. The degree to which rumination accounts for the co-occurrence of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, however, has never been tested. We used a sample of early adolescents (N = 1,065) assessed at 3 time points spanning 7 months to examine

Long enough to act? Symptom and behavior patterns prior to out-of-hospital sudden cardiac death.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death is a major cause of death in the United States. Most cases occur outside the hospital, yet little is known about the symptoms and actions of individuals who die before reaching the hospital. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the symptoms, symptom management, and care-seeking patterns in sudden cardiac death victims. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to obtain descriptions of symptoms and treatment-seeking delay from family members and bystanders (respondents) in 140 cases of sudden

Distress symptoms and high-risk behaviors prospectively associated with treatment use among returning veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Distress symptoms and high-risk behaviors among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans were examined as predictors of treatment utilization. METHODS: Veterans (N=618) completed self-report measures upon treatment enrollment (2005-2008). Two-year utilization data were obtained for five settings: primary care, mental health within primary care, outpatient mental health, emergency room, and inpatient psychiatric. RESULTS: Pain was associated with primary care use; depression, panic, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol misuse, and aggression were associated with use of other settings

Frontal EEG asymmetry and symptom response to cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with social anxiety disorder.

Although previous studies have shown that socially anxious individuals exhibit greater relative right frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity at rest, no studies have investigated whether improvements in symptoms as a result of treatment are associated with concomitant changes in resting brain activity. Regional EEG activity was measured at rest in 23 patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) before and after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Results indicated that patients shifted significantly from greater relative right to greater relative left resting frontal brain activity from pr

Prevalence, self-care behaviors, and self-care activities for peripheral neuropathy symptoms of HIV/AIDS.

As part of a larger randomized controlled trial examining the efficacy of an HIV/AIDS symptom management manual (n = 775), this study examined the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in HIV-infected individuals at 12 sites in the USA, Puerto Rico, and Africa. Neuropathy was reported by 44% of the sample; however, only 29.4% reported initiating self-care behaviors to address the neuropathy symptoms. Antiretroviral therapy was found to increase the frequency of neuropathy symptoms, with an increased mean intensity of 28%. A principal axis factor analysis with Promax rotation was used to assess t

Trajectories of symptom reduction and engagement during treatment for childhood behavior disorders: differences across settings.

In this study, we examined trajectories of symptom reduction and family engagement during the modular treatment phase of a clinical trial for early-onset disruptive behavior disorders that was applied either in community settings or a clinic. Participants (N=139) were 6-11 year-old children with diagnoses of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD). Symptoms of ODD/CD and level of engagement were assessed at every session during the course of treatment. Overall, symptom reduction was characterized by a gradual decline in symptoms over the first 11 sessions followed by a fla

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms moderate cognition and behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Recent estimates suggest that 31% of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) meet diagnostic criteria for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and another 24% of children with ASD exhibit subthreshold clinical ADHD symptoms. Presence of ADHD symptoms in the context of ASD could have a variety of effects on cognition, autistic traits, and adaptive/maladaptive behaviors including: exacerbating core ASD impairments; adding unique impairments specific to ADHD; producing new problems unreported in ASD or ADHD; having no clear impact; or producing some combination of these scenario

A cross-fostering study in a genetic animal model of depression: maternal behavior and depression-like symptoms.

Connections between maternal behavior and childhood depression were examined by using a "genetic animal model"; Flinder Sensitive Line--(FSL) rats, and cross-fostering the offspring with the control strain, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The control procedure was "in-fostering", where the foster dam and her pups were from the same strain. Contribution of pups' characteristics/genotype to maternal behavior was examined. After weaning, we measured male offspring's body weight, immobility in the swim test, and basal corticosterone (CORT) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) levels at the prepubertal age of

Quetiapine treatment of psychotic symptoms and aggressive behavior in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies: a case series.

The authors describe here the clinical outcomes of quetiapine treatment in nine patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) who manifested psychotic symptoms and aggressive behavior. Patients who had a score of 3 or higher on any of the three items of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), agitation/aggression, hallucinations, and delusions, were given quetiapine 25-75 mg/day. Each patient's clinical status was assessed at baseline and after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment by using the NPI, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Simpson-Angus Scale (S-A). Five of nine patients had a positive re

[Condylomata acuminata: a rare symptom of ubiquitous human papilloma virus and not a sign of risky sex behavior].

In general, condylomata acuminata can be diagnosed and treated by the general practitioner. Condylomata are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). According to their carcinogenicity HPVs are classified as high risk and low risk HPV. The benign condylomata are an infrequent sign of an infection with low risk HPV, while cervical cancer is a rare and late complication of an infection with high risk HPV. Because high and low risk HPV are different viruses, the risk of cervical cancer is not increased by condylomata. Anogenital HPVs are predominantly transmitted sexually. It is usef

Gut microbiota are linked to gastrointestinal symptoms and behavioral changes but not inflammation in autism spectrum disorder: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are increased in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We examined the relationship between ASD severity, intestinal inflammation, gut permeability, and dysbiosis. METHODS: Our cross-sectional study examined baseline data from a clinical trial and included stools from typically developing (TD) controls and siblings. GI symptom severity was assessed using GI severity index (GSI) with Bristol stool scoring, while ASD symptoms were quantified using Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-2). Biomarkers including plasma zonulin, occludin, and S100A9, an
