BACKGROUND: Given the changes in the patterns of muscular activation and scapular movement in individuals with subacromial pain syndrome, the use of neuromuscular training has been considered in rehabilitation protocols. There is currently no evidence of the effects of the use of three-dimensional (3D) kinematic biofeedback on individuals with subacromial pain syndrome. This study aimed to determine the immediate effect of scapular motor control exercises using 3D kinematic biofeedback on the scapular kinematics, inter-segment coordination and pain of individuals with subacromial pain syndrome

AIM: To evaluate changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) spectral characteristics during a single session of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV BF).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty adolescents, aged 16-17 years, were studied. Adolescents of the BF-group (n=110) conducted HRV BF session to enhance vagal influences on the heart rhythm. Adolescents of the control group (n=40) remained in relaxed resting state. EEG was recorded with eyes closed before and after BF training. EEG absolute spectral power values of parts without artifacts in each frequency band were determined.

Anecdotally, velar fronting can be difficult to remediate in some children. This pilot study examined the use of ultrasound visual feedback in remediating velar fronting in typically developing children. A single-case, multiple-baseline across-subjects experimental design was used to examine acquisition, retention and generalisation of velar treatment targets. Two otherwise typically developing children (P1, aged 4;0; P3, aged 4;11) completed the study. The productions of /k/ and /ɡ/ at syllable level were targeted during treatment. P1 improved her productions of /k/ and /ɡ/ at syllable level

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to optimize an intelligent artificial anal sphincter system (AASS) II for patients with severe fecal incontinence.
METHODS: Redesigning and integrating a pressure sensor into the sphincter prosthesis allows us to reduce the sensor volume and makes it suitable for a chronic, ambulatory application. Furthermore, a close-loop frequency control method was designed for the transcutaneous energy transfer system. Finally, a longer working time of the implanted device was obtained by the low-power design of the hardware and software. The new model was implanted i

After lower-extremity orthopedic trauma and surgery, patients are often advised to restrict weight bearing on the affected limb. Conventional training methods are not effective at enabling patients to comply with recommendations for partial weight bearing. The current study assessed a novel method of using real-time haptic (vibratory/vibrotactile) biofeedback to improve compliance with instructions for partial weight bearing. Thirty healthy, asymptomatic participants were randomized into 1 of 3 groups: verbal instruction, bathroom scale training, and haptic biofeedback. Participants were instr

The lack of perception in the hindfoot increases the plantar flexion, causing irregular posture due to the foot position, a disability known as equinus foot deformity. A portable device, named baropodometer, that measures the pressure at the forefoot and hindfoot regions was built to help this population in terms of balance and posture correction. Ten hemiparetic teenager volunteers with equinus foot participated in the experiments. The results demonstrated that the proposed device increased the weight-bearing in upright stance in the paretic side, decreasing the weight in the non-paretic side

Electroencephalogram biofeedback (EBF), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) are emerging interventions that attempt to directly impact brain function through neurostimulation and neurofeedback mechanisms. This article provides a brief overview of each of these techniques, summarizes the relevant research findings, and examines the implications of this research for practice standards based on the guidelines for recommending evidence based treatments as developed by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for attention deficit hy

OBJECTIVES: To determine if cardiorespiratory biofeedback increases heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with documented coronary artery disease (CAD).
BACKGROUND: Diminished HRV has been associated with increased cardiac morbidity and mortality. Evidence suggests that various lifestyle changes and pharmacologic therapies can improve HRV. The objective of this study was to determine if biofeedback increases HRV in patients with CAD.
METHODS: Patients with established CAD (n = 63; mean age, 67 years) were randomly assigned to conventional therapy or to 6 biofeedback sessions consisting of

The study was aimed at investigation of a deficit of learning the center-of-pressure voluntary control in patients with lesions of corticospinal and nigrostriatal systems. Thirty three patients with Parkinson's disease and 20 patients with hemiparesis after cerebrovascular accidents in the MCA participated in the investigation. The subjects stood on a force platform and in the form of a computer game were trained to match the projection of the center of pressure (a cursor) with a target on the screen under the visual feedback control. Two different postural tasks were presented. In the first t

Various methods of treatment, other than antibiotic therapy, have been proposed for the treatment of female urethral syndrome; however, the results of these treatment methods are disappointing, due perhaps to the use of the wrong treatment approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of external sphincter relaxant and biofeedback (BFB) with electrical stimulation therapy (EST) in patients who do not respond well to antibiotics. One hundred and five patients with a diagnosis of female urethral syndrome were entered into this study. Antibiotics were given as a first-line the

This is a preliminary investigation to detect the body sway and postural changes of patients with AIS under different spatial images. Two pairs of low-power prismatic eye lenses (Fresnel prisms) with 5 dioptre and 10 dioptre were used. In the experiment, the apices of the prisms were orientated randomly at every 22.5 degrees from 0 degrees to 360 degrees to test changes. Four patients with mean age of 11 and Cobb's angle of 30 degrees were recruited and the results showed that the low-power prisms at specific orientations (157.5 degrees and 180 degrees) could cause positive postural changes (2

Phantom pain is a frequent consequence of the amputation of an extremity and causes considerable discomfort and disruption of daily activities. This study describes a patient with extreme phantom limb pain following amputation of the right upper limb. The treatment consisted of 6 sessions of EMG biofeedback followed by 6 sessions of temperature biofeedback. The patient did not use a prosthesis and had not received previous treatment for chronic pain. Results demonstrated complete elimination of phantom limb pain after treatment, which was maintained at a 3- and 12-month follow-up. Pain relief

Suffering chronic pain is a common and debilitating problem that significantly impairs the quality of life of affected patients. Because we continue to struggle with chronic pelvic pain disorders both diagnostically and therapeutically, a neuro-behavioral perspective should be used in an attempt to explain pathways and neurophysiological mechanisms, and to improve diagnostics and treatment of male pelvic pain. First, however, malignant and acute/chronic bacterial disease has to be excluded as a cause of chronic pain in every single case. Then diagnostic approaches should screen for lower urina

Diffuse oesophageal spasm is a functional oesophageal motility disorder of unknown aetiology, which appears to be due to a disturbance of the normal pharmacological timing of propulsive contraction occurring in the oesophageal body after swallowing. The lack of pathophysiological understanding may be due to the fact that there is more than one pathophysiological pathway causing symptoms of diffuse oesophageal spasm. Barium studies, oesophageal scintigraphy and fiberoptic examination can be helpful in finding the correct diagnosis, but manometry is still the gold standard of diagnostic procedur

PURPOSE: Large rectoceles have been associated with symptoms of impaired rectal evacuation, often leading to rectocele repair. However, these symptoms, or the anatomic abnormality, may be caused, at least in part, by a primary disturbance of rectoanal coordination. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of biofeedback therapy in such patients.
METHODS: Thirty-two female patients (median age, 52 years) complaining of impaired rectal evacuation and with a rectocele greater than 2 cm at proctography were evaluated by structured questionnaire before, immediately after treatment, and at follow

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities of descending colon motility reported in a subset of patients with rectal evacuation disorders are consistent with a rectocolonic inhibitory reflex. Our aims were to evaluate distal colon motor function and rectal sensation in such patients and assess effects of biofeedback (BF) training on these functions.
METHODS: Seven patients (five women, two men; mean age 36 yr) with rectal evacuation disorders were studied before and after 10-days biofeedback training; six healthy volunteers (five women, one man; mean age 30 yr) were studied once. Colonic compliance, motility,

Dyschezia may be caused by pelvic floor dyssynergia, which takes place when a paradoxical contraction or a failure to relax the pelvic floor muscles occurs during attempts to defecate. The aim of our study was to set up a new bimodal rehabilitation programme for pelvic floor dyssynergia, which combined pelviperineal kinesitherapy and biofeedback, and to evaluate the results of this treatment. Thirty-five patients (age range: 28-64 years; mean age: 42.5 years) from the outpatient unit of the Clinica Chirurgica of the University of Florence, Italy, and an age-matched group of 10 healthy control

Videonasopharyngoscopy was used as an instrument for visual biofeedback during speech in cleft palate patients. Seventeen cleft palate patients were randomly selected for the study. All patients showed velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), compensatory articulation (CA) and negative movement of lateral pharyngeal walls (NMLPW) during speech. Nine patients received speech therapy for correcting CA. Eight patients received speech therapy and underwent videonasopharyngoscopy as an instrument for visual biofeedback of the velopharyngeal sphincter. After 12 weeks, NMLPW was modified in the patients r

Biofeedback is a method of pelvic floor rehabilitation using a surface electrode inserted into the vagina and a catheter in the rectum. Forty women with genuine urinary stress incontinence were randomized to compare the efficacy of physiotherapy and physiotherapy in combination with biofeedback. The effect of the treatment was determined by a standardized pad-weighing test. Long-term status was determined using a questionnaire after 2-3 years. Thirty-four women completed the treatment. The study showed a statistically significant better improvement in the biofeedback group. The long-term effec
