Prevalence and causes of blindness and vision impairment in Western Uganda: Findings from a rapid assessment of avoidable blindness (RAAB) survey.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence and causes of blindness and vision impairment (VI) among adults aged ≥50 years in Western Uganda. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in Western Uganda (July-August 2023) using RAAB7. Adults aged ≥50 years who had resided in the study districts for at least six months in the past year were eligible. Participants were identified through door-to-door household visits using a two-stage cluster sampling approach. Primary outcomes include prevalence of blindness and VI and its causes. Secondary outcomes include cataract surgical cov…

Prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment in Bangladeshi adults: results of the National Blindness and Low Vision Survey of Bangladesh.

AIM: To determine the age, sex, and cause specific prevalences of blindness and visual impairment in adults 30 years of age and older in Bangladesh. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 12 782 adults 30 years of age and older was selected based on multistage, cluster random sampling with probability proportional to size procedures. The breakdown of the cluster sites was proportional to the rural/urban distribution of the national population. The examination protocol consisted of an interview, visual acuity (VA) testing, autorefraction, and optic disc examination on all subjects. Cor…

Ultrastructural changes of the retina and the retinal pigment epithelium in Briard dogs with hereditary congenital night blindness and partial day blindness.

The offspring of two Briard dogs (brother and sister) with congenital, clinically stationary night blindness showed an aggravation of the disease with severe impairment of day vision in addition to night blindness. This ultrastructural study was performed on four such second generation puppies at the age of 4 months. The neuroretina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) from four locations were studied: the central area (immediately temporal to the optic disc); the centre of the tapetal area; the upper periphery (border of tapetal area); and the lower periphery (non-tapetal area). The RPE showe…

[The punishment of blinding and the life of the blind].

The article deals with a group of people who were deprived of their eyesight by private acts of force or by executions of lawful sentences. In early medieval texts blinding is frequently mentioned in connection with popes, kings, princes or bishops. However, since the High Middle Ages these dignitaries were increasingly spared the loss of their eyes. It may be said that on the whole, from the eighth to the twelfth century, blinding was overwhelmingly used to dispose of political adversaries, but did then rapidly turn into a criminal punishment. In the earliest 'Landfriedensordnungen' of the la

Neural networks associated with eye movements in congenital blindness.

Recent studies have shown that during the typical resting-state, echo planar imaging (EPI) time series obtained from the eye orbit area correlate with brain regions associated with oculomotor control and lower-level visual cortex. Here, we asked whether congenitally blind (CB) shows similar patterns, suggesting a hard-wired constraint on connectivity. We find that orbital EPI signals in CB do correlate with activity in the motor cortex, but less so with activity in the visual cortex. However, the temporal patterns of this eye movement-related signal differed strongly between CB and sighted con

[Unclear cause of unilateral blindness with normal inflammation parameters].

A 70-year-old female patient presented with unilateral blindness of the right eye. As C‑reactive protein (CRP) and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were inconspicuous, a nonarteritic embolic occlusion was assumed; however, after detailed anamnesis large vessel vasculitis (LVV) appeared more likely, which was confirmed by the subsequent imaging diagnostics. This rare case of LVV without an increase in one of the inflammatory parameters CRP or ESR highlights the importance of the medical history and targeted diagnostic procedures.

Insights into Anton Syndrome: When the brain denies blindness.

INTRODUCTION: Anosognosia, a neurological condition, involves a lack of awareness of one's neurological or psychiatric deficits. Anton Syndrome (AS), an unusual form of anosognosia, manifests as bilateral vision loss coupled with denial of blindness. This systematic review delves into 64 studies encompassing 72 AS cases to explore demographics, clinical presentations, treatments, and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study rigorously followed PRISMA guidelines, screening PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases without timeframe limitations. Only English human studies providing full te…

Charcot and hallucinations: A study in insight and blindness.

Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) showed little interest in mental disorders, the domain of nineteenth-century alienists. But hallucinations are not confined to the field of psychiatry, and Charcot, who had once tested the hallucinogenic effects of hashish in his youth, went on to describe hallucinations in the course of various neurological conditions as just another semiological element. Most of his or his disciples' writings on hallucinations can be found in his work on hysteria. Hallucinations and delusions were part of "grand hysteria" and occurred at the end of the attack (third or fourth

Effects of Blindness on Sleep/Wakefulness States in Mice.

To examine the effects of blindness on sleep/wakefulness states, we compared locomotor activity and delayed recovery from isoflurane anesthesia induced by hypnotics during light and dark periods in sighted CBA/N and blind CBA/J mice. Locomotor activity around the switch from the dark to light period significantly differed in both mice. Delayed recovery induced by brotizolam was attenuated in both periods in CBA/J mice. In addition, the period specificity of delayed recovery caused by suvorexant or diphenhydramine in CBA/N mice was abolished in CBA/J mice. These results suggest that blindness i…

Steroid-induced glaucoma: an avoidable cause of irreversible blindness.

A man in his 70s on regular follow-up with an ophthalmologist for 10 years presented with blurry vision in his right eye for 4 days. He was diagnosed with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) bilaterally 18 months earlier and treated with antiglaucoma eye-drops. On direct questioning, he admitted to using fixed combination tobramycin 0.3%/dexamethasone 0.1% eye-drops frequently to relieve ocular redness and discomfort in both eyes for 3.5 years without his ophthalmologist's knowledge. Examination disclosed markedly elevated IOP, advanced optic disc cupping and tunnel vision due to steroid-induc
