Evaluation of cerebral blood flow volume using color duplex sonography in patients with untreated panic disorder.

The aim of this study was to compare cerebral blood flow (CBF) using color duplex sonography in panic disorder and normal controls. We report 24 untreated patients and 20 healthy subjects. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Symptom Check List-90 were completed on each subject. The internal carotid artery (ICA) and vertebral artery (VA) of both sides were explored with a 7.5-Mhz linear array transducer. CBF volume and mean ICA flow velocity were significantly higher in patients than normal subjects adjusted for age. However, we could not find a

Validation of fractional moving blood volume measurement with power Doppler ultrasound in an experimental sheep model.

OBJECTIVE: To compare fractional moving blood volume (FMBV) estimation using power Doppler ultrasound (PDU) with blood flow estimation using radioactive microspheres (RMS) for evaluation of fetal organ blood perfusion. METHODS: Blood flow was measured in the adrenal gland of nine exteriorized fetal lambs. Five fetal lambs underwent total umbilical cord occlusion in order to induce changes in the adrenal blood flow (asphyxia group). Four lambs were used as sham controls (control group). Three RMS injections, with coincident PDU recordings of the adrenal gland, were performed in each lamb. In t…

[Carotid blood flow volume measurement using an ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter--predictive diagnosis of ischemic cerebrovascular diseases].

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to predict ischemic cerebrovascular diseases by noninvasive methods before overt symptoms develop. Advanced carotid and cerebral atherosclerosis reduce common carotid blood flow volume due to increased resistance of peripheral circulation. According to a study in which clinical and pathological specimens were compared, the lower threshold for the flow volume in normal individuals has been confirmed to be 6.5 ml/s. We investigated the possibility that the development of ischemic cerebrovascular diseases can be predicted based on blood flow volume. METHOD: We conduct

Cocaine decreases relative cerebral blood volume in humans: a dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance imaging study.

Cocaine has substantial effects on cerebral hemodynamics which may partly underlie both its euphorigenic and toxic effects. Dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance imaging (DSC-MRI) was used to determine whether a dose-effect relationship could be detected between cocaine administration and cerebral blood volume reduction in human brain. Twenty-three healthy and neurologically normal adult males with a history of recreational cocaine use (3-40 lifetime exposures) participated. Subjects underwent DSC-MRI measurements of relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) at baseline and 10 min aft…

Volume regulation in red blood cells of the frog Rana temporaria after osmotic shrinkage and swelling.

To investigate the volume regulatory ability of frog erythrocytes, we studied water and ion contents in the cells incubated in isosmotic (210 mOsm) and anisosmotic media. The cell volume decreased to 63% of the control in a hypertonic medium (+200 mM sucrose) and then gradually recovered to approximately 81% within 2 h. The regulatory volume increase (RVI) was associated with the accumulation of intracellular Na+, whereas the intracellular K+ content remained the same. Na+ (22Na) influx into the red cells increased from 1.1 +/- 0.2 in an isotonic medium to 12.4 +/- 0.4 mmol/(1 cells.h) in a hy

Advantages of larger volume, less frequent intrauterine red blood cell transfusions for maternal red cell alloimmunization.

Larger volume intravascular transfusions to manage severe maternal red cell alloimmunization in pregnancy may prolong the interval between procedures without increasing maternal, fetal, or neonatal complications. A retrospective cohort study compared the management and outcome of 19 patients with severe red cell alloimmunization managed at two facilities with different intravascular transfusion protocols. The volume of blood transfused, pre- and post-transfusion fetal hematocrit, and interval (days) between intravascular transfusions were compared. The respective maternal, fetal, and neonatal

[Effects of analgesia and sedation on cerebrovascular circulation, cerebral blood volume, cerebral metabolism and intracranial pressure].

Cerebral blood flow autoregulation, CO2 reactivity and the pressure-volume relationship may be impaired or abolished in patients with intrac … ral catecholamine turnover. Hypnotics and benzodiazepines decrease ICP due to decreases in cerebral blood volume. However, these drugs may also decrease mean arterial blood pressure, which may result in a critical reduction in cerebral perfusion pressure. ICP remains unchanged with the use of opioids as long as mean arterial pressure is maintained constant. Ho …

Small-volume resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock in dogs: effects on systemic hemodynamics and systemic blood flow.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: This study compared canine systemic hemodynamics and organ blood flow (radioactive microsphere technique) after resuscitation with 0.8% saline (Na+ 137 mEq/L), 7.2% hypertonic saline (Na+ 1233 mEq/L), 20% hydroxyethyl starch in 0.8% saline, or 20% hydroxyethyl starch in 7.2% saline, each in a volume approximating 15% of shed blood volume. Twenty-four endotracheally intubated mongrel dogs (18 to 24 kg) underwent a 30-min period of hemorrhagic shock, from time 0 to 30 min into the shock period, followed by fluid resuscitation. Data were collected at baseline, 15 min into …

Cardiovascular alterations in severe pregnancy-induced hypertension: effects of intravenous nitroglycerin coupled with blood volume expansion.

Control of blood pressure in severe pregnancy-induced hypertension has often relied on agents with an unpredictable onset and duration of ac … /min X m2. While volume expansion alone had no effect on mean arterial pressure, the combination of blood volume expansion and nitroglycerin resulted in a marked resistance to the hypotensive effect of nitroglycerin. Cardiac index, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, and oxygen utilization were not significantly different from baseline values when volume expan …

Effects of volume expansion and parathyroid hormone on total renal blood flow and its intracortical distribution.

Clearance and renal blood flow studies were performed during hydropenia, 2.5 and 10 percent steady-state saline expansion, and acute administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in chronically thyroparathyroidectomized (TPTX) dogs and during hydropenia and 10 percent expansion in intact dogs. Renal cortical blood flow distribution was measured with radioactive microspheres In TPTX dogs, 2.5 percent expansion increased sodium excretion but did not alter total or intracortical blood flow. With 10 percent expansion, sodium excretion and juxtamedullary (zone 4) blood flow increased in both TPTX and

Pulmonary blood volumes on computed tomography predict residual pulmonary hypertension post-pulmonary endarterectomy.

Pulmonary blood volumes (PBVs), currently not assessed by computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA), could provide additional information to routine investigations performed for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). We investigated CTPA-based PBVs in evaluating hemodynamic outcome from pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). A deep learning-based CTPA vascular segmentation model, differentiating arteries and veins, was applied for automated PBV measurements in patients with CTEPH who underwent PEA at the United Kingdom's national CTEPH service. Pulmonary arteries were compartme…

The role of myocardial blood volume in the pathophysiology of angina with non-obstructed coronary arteries: The MICORDIS study.

BACKGROUND: Angina with Non-Obstructed Coronary Arteries (ANOCA) involves abnormal vasomotor responses. While reduced coronary flow is an established contributor to myocardial hypoxia, myocardial blood volume (MBV) independently regulates myocardial oxygen uptake but its role in ANOCA remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that reduced MBV contributes to ANOCA, and associates with insulin resistance in ANOCA. METHODS: MBV in ANOCA patients was compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. ANOCA patients underwent coronary angiography with invasive coronary function testing (CFT) t…

Lack of Detection of Haemophilus influenzae Using Adult Blood Culture Bottles Inoculated at Low Volumes.

BACKGROUND: Based on guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society for Microbiology, many pediatric hospitals are implementing weight-based collection guidelines for blood cultures. To simplify the process of culture collection, there has been interest in validating the use of adult blood culture bottles with low volumes, which may allow for a "one size fits all" bottle. METHOD: This study examined 9 clinically relevant organisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus agalactiae, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus
