The future costs of cancer attributable to excess body weight in Brazil, 2030-2040.

BACKGROUND: Excess body weight (EBW), herein defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2, is a well-known modifiable risk factor for cancer and a pivotal vector for growing healthcare costs. We estimated the future (2030) federal direct healthcare costs of cancer in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) attributable to EBW. We also projected direct healthcare costs of cancer that could be potentially saved in 2040, considering counterfactual (alternative) scenarios of population-wide reductions in the BMI to be achievedin 2030. METHODS: We developed a macrosimulation model by sex using sel…

Algorithmic estimation of adrenal volume based on body weight and CT landmarks in dogs.

Computed tomographic (CT) methods for quantifying adrenal size are helpful for identifying and directing management of adrenal disease in dogs. This retrospective, observational study aimed to use CT to determine anatomic landmarks associated with adrenal gland volume in dogs, and subsequently develop an algorithm to estimate adrenal volume for individual subjects. Abdominal CT images from 150 dogs without adrenal disease were assessed. The volume of the left and right adrenals, as well as dimensions from anatomic structures, were measured. Predictive models for adrenal volume were examined wi

Weight-based vs body surface area-based fluid resuscitation predictions in pediatric burn patients.

Treatment for pediatric burns includes fluid resuscitation with formulas estimating fluid requirements based on weight and/or body surface area (BSA) with percent total body surface area burn (%TBSA burn). This study evaluates the risk of complications using weight-based resuscitation in children following burn injuries and compares fluid estimates with those that incorporate BSA. A retrospective review was conducted on 110 children admitted to an ABA-verified urban pediatric burn center over 12 years. Patients had ≥ 15% TBSA burn and were resuscitated with the weight-based Parkland formula. B

Relationship between placental elastography, maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal obesity is a significant risk factor for poor pregnancy outcomes. Obesity is linked to abnormalities in placental tissue at term. The purpose of this study was to correlate changes in placental stiffness, measured via ultrasound elastography, with maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain. METHODS: Body Mass Index and gestation weight gain data was collected from 238 women. Elastography measurements were obtained via ultrasound at 24-, 28- and 36-weeks' gestation. An analysis using a linear mixed regression model assessed for the statistical sig

Weight gain and gastrostomy tube safety during serial body casting for early onset scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Serial casting has been shown to improve curve deformity for patients with early-onset scoliosis (EOS). However, despite prior literature demonstrating the importance of weight and nutrition in EOS patients, there is limited information regarding complications and weight gain ability for children undergoing serial casting. Additionally, parents of patients undergoing serial casting often have concerns regarding weight gain and patient comfort, which tend to be amplified in patients with gastrostomy tubes (g-tubes). We aim to understand changes in weight, g-tube complications, and cast

A Center of Mass Estimation and Control Strategy for Body-Weight-Support Treadmill Training.

Walking disorders are common in post-stroke. Body weight support (BWS) systems have been proposed and proven to enhance gait training systems for recovering in individuals with hemiplegia. However, the fixed weight support and walking speed increase the risk of falling and decrease the active participation of the subjects. This paper proposes a strategy to enhance the efficiency of BWS treadmill training. It consists in regulating the height of the BWS system to track the height of the subject's center of mass (CoM), whereby the CoM is estimated through a long-short term memory (LSTM) network …

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells from obese mice prevent body weight gain and hyperglycemia.

Changes that occur to the stem cell microenvironment with disease are a major consideration that may affect the behavior and potential therapeutic efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of adipose-derived MSCs (ADSCs) from obese mice with hyperglycemia on body weight and glucose homeostasis. After 10 weeks of high-fat diet, mice were injected with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and ADSCs derived from normal mice (N-ADSCs) or obese mice (O-ADSCs), respectively. Mice fed with standard rodent chow were injected with PBS and served as norma…

A systematic review indicates an association between birth weight and body fat in childhood.

AIM: To summarise the existing evidence regarding the body fat of small or large for gestation subjects, evaluated from birth up to 18 years of age. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines were adopted for the current systematic review, including studies having evaluated body fat with bioelectrical impedance analysis, air displacement plethysmography, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: A total of 31 studies was included. The balance of evidence suggests that small for gestation infants have decreased fat mass at birth; postnatally they experience increased adipos

Elevated body weight modulates subcortical volume change and associated clinical response following electroconvulsive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a frequent somatic comorbidity of major depression, and it has been associated with worse clinical outcomes and brain structural abnormalities. Converging evidence suggests that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induces both clinical improvements and increased subcortical grey matter volume in patients with depression. However, it remains unknown whether increased body weight modulates the clinical response and structural neuroplasticity that occur with ECT. METHODS: To address this question, we conducted a longitudinal investigation of structural MRI data from the Global…

A combined mindfulness-prolonged chewing intervention reduces body weight, food craving, and emotional eating.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional weight-loss programs that induce a calorie deficit mostly fail in long-term weight reduction and disadvantageous eating styles often remain unchanged. Mindfulness interventions therefore redirect the focus away from the weight-loss goal and toward the process of eating itself. By eating more mindfully, at a slower pace, and with an enhanced focus on bodily sensations, participants might not only indirectly reduce their daily calorie intake but also eat less craving and stress driven. METHOD: This study randomized participants to either intervention (n = 23) or waitlist
