CT guided stereotaxic biopsy (aspiration) has been proved as a procedure of choice in the assessment and treatment of a deep-seated sinusogenic, brain abscess in a 54-year old man. The clinical features were atypical; massive neurological deficits (left-side spastic hemiplegia, dysarthria, urinary incontinence) without signs and symptoms of infectious disease. The clinical course and CT finding primarily showed a metastatic neoplastic process surrounded by a large edema in the right fronto-parietal parts so that an abscess or less probably glioma were also considered. From the neurosurgeon's p…

67 cases of brain abscess were analyzed retrospectively. As 2 comatose patients died on admission before any treatment was started, the results are based on 65 treated patients. Different methods of treatment included: total removal in 36 patients, drainage in 14, aspiration in 6 and conservative treatment in 9. Management mortality was 18.5% and was almost not dependent on the method of treatment (except aspiration) being lowest in the drainage group. The mortality was significantly higher in patients with serious impairment of consciousness on admission. Follow-up examination after 1 to 11 y…

One hundred and seventy-two cases of intracranial abscesses, obtained from Neurosurgical and Centralised Autopsy Records for Northern Ireland for the 30 years, 1947--1976, have been reviewed. The incidence of the disease has fallen from five to three per million of population per year over the past three decades. Intracranial abscesses were three times as common in males as in females. Twenty-nine per cent of the abscesses were in the temporal lobe, 25% frontal, 10% parietal, 6% cerebellar, 3% occipital, and 7% were either subdural or in deep sites such as the thalamus; the remainder (20%) wer

The bacterial species found in pus aspirated from brain abscesses in two patients were typical of those found in dental sepsis. Subsequently apical-root abscesses were demonstrated in the upper jaws of both patients. This evidence strongly suggests that these cerebral abscesses were secondary to dental sepsis which could have spread from the teeth to the frontal lobes by several possible antaomical pathways.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses are a rare but serious complication of focal intracerebral infection.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a patient of acute subdural abscess with brain abscess in the left temporal lobe. After craniotomy, combined with the Third Next Generation Sequencing and Gene Diagnosis (TNGS & GD) of abscess, we prescribed sensitive antibiotics; the patient recovers well and the abscess did not recur.
CONCLUSION: For patients with acute subdural abscess, combined craniotomy and the TNGS & GD of abscess could achieve good results.

Encephalitis and cerebral abscesses are rare, serious complications of deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. We report on two patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) who developed a critical condition with focal neurological symptoms and decreased consciousness, after an initially uncomplicated subthalamic nucleus DBS implantation. Because of the clinical and radiological suspicion of encephalitis and brain abscess, DBS was explanted and the abscess drained. After prolonged antibiotic treatment they gradually fully recovered, with persistently improved PD symptoms in patient 1. Concluding, pati…

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary Spinal Cord Abscess (ISCA) is an uncommon infectious disease of the central nervous system. Since its first report in 1830, there have been very few documented cases associated with it. Here, we present a case of ISCA with cerebral abscess caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old male patient presented with head and neck pain, fever, and left limb weakness for 5 days. The diagnosis of ISCA with brain abscess caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae was confirmed through sputum culture, cerebrospinal fluid gene test, pus culture, and magnetic resonanc…

Wiskott-aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare X-linked primary immunodeficiency characterized by thrombocytopenia, eczema, and recurrent infections. Live vaccines, such as Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), routinely administered in tuberculosis-endemic regions, may cause severe complications in undiagnosed patients. We report a 2-year-old boy with genetically confirmed WAS who developed a rare BCG-related brain abscess. The patient initially presented with neonatal thrombocytopenia and eczema, followed by recurrent respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Whole exome sequencing identified a patho…

A crescentic ("semilunar") cap-like pus-fluid level seen across CT/MRI sequences in a polymicrobial (bacterial-fungal) brain abscess which may aid preoperative recognition when interpreted alongside clinical context and DWI/ADC.

Brain abscess is a serious, life-threatening intracranial infection caused by inflammation and collection of infected material. Given the rise of multi-drug resistant strains and the widespread presence of bacteria, it is probable that the incidence of brain abscesses is expected to endure. The sequela of brain abscess constitutes a major source of morbidity and mortality. Brain abscess may cause permanent neurological damage, such as paresis, hydrocephalus, spasticity, mental deterioration and epileptic seizure. Current therapeutic approaches include surgical excision or drainage combined wit…

Proteus mirabilis is a very common gram-negative facultative anaerobe seen in urinary tract infections. This rod-shaped bacterium tends to cause urolithiasis via its ability to alkalinize the urine. However, in some cases, this bacterium has been shown to cause bacteremia as well as other complicated infections. Here we would like to present a rare case of Proteus mirabilis that has invaded the brain in a patient that has a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placed due to coccidioidal meningitis causing hydrocephalus. We would also like to discuss the importance of the monitoring of VP shunt and

Non-typhoidal Salmonellosis are an important cause of gastroenteritis and invasive disease in developing countries, with increase resistance and mortality in paediatric age group. We report here, a rare case of bacteremia and brain abscess in a 3year old female child with Salmonella enterica serovar Give as a causative organism.
