Exploring the interplay of psychiatric symptoms, antipsychotic medications, side effects, employment status, and quality of life in Chronic Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Many factors contribute to quality of life (QoL) in patients with schizophrenia, yet limited research examined these factors in patients in China. This cross-sectional study explores subjective QoL and its associated factors in patients. METHODS: The QoL was assessed using the Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (SQLS). Clinical symptoms were evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and seven factors were extracted. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) were used to assess depression and anxiety. Cognitive impairmen…

Use of En-Bloc Multiple Monitored Electroconvulsive Therapy in Benzodiazepine Refractory Malignant Catatonia.

We report a case of an adolescent female experiencing benzodiazepine and single-stimulation electroconvulsive (ECT)-refractory malignant catatonia, who improved with the use multiple monitored ECT (mmECT). Per the 2001 American Psychiatric Association guidelines, mmECT should be considered only in cases of intractable seizures or neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Since 2001, neuroleptic malignant syndrome and malignant catatonia have been described as occurring along the same spectrum of illness. Therefore, given the life-threatening nature of her condition, as well as the brief seizure duration

RBC and plasma choline in neuroleptic-treated schizophrenic patients.

We measured red blood cell (RBC) choline and plasma choline concentrations in 27 chronic schizophrenic inpatients and 23 normal controls. Both blood choline measures had a significant test-retest reliability in patients whose neuroleptic status remained unchanged over 1 month. RBC choline concentration was significantly lower in patients medicated with neuroleptics and cogentin. Patients with a low RBC choline and a low RBC/plasma choline ratio were on significantly higher doses of medication and had higher scores on the hostility/suspiciousness subscale of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. …

Recommendations of the schizophrenia expert center network for the screening prevention and treatment of sleep disorders based on the results from the real-world schizophrenia FACE-SZ national cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders associated factors are under explored in schizophrenia while the literature suggests high and heterogeneous frequency. AIMS: The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of sleep disorders in the real-world FACE-SZ national cohort. METHOD: Stabilized schizophrenic outpatients were recruited in 10 expert centers for schizophrenia. Sleep quality was explored with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and sleep disorders was defined by a PSQI score > 5. Psychosis severity was measured with the Positive and Negative Syndrome

Development, reliability and validity of a self-administered questionnaire on subjective opinion about delusions and voices.

OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on the psychometric characteristics of a self-report instrument, the Delusion and Voices Self-Assessment (DV-SA) questionnaire, to assess delusions and auditory hallucinations from the clients' perspective. METHODS: The DV-SA was administered to 70 schizophrenic patients in treatment in an outpatient mental health clinic in Naples, Italy. It was administered twice to determine the test-retest reliability. A clinician who was blind to the patients' DV-SA ratings also rated the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Sensitivity to change was assessed in 30 patients…

Prognostic value of pretreatment social adaptation in bulimia nervosa.

We evaluated several indices of pretreatment social adaptation (social and vocational adjustment, DSM-III-R Axis-V ratings, and "object-relations" capacities) as predictors of the response of 44 completers of a multimodal therapy for bulimia nervosa. Response was assessed using standard measures of eating and psychiatric symptoms. Hierarchical regressions revealed that pretreatment social adjustment explained substantial (and significant) proportions of variance in posttreatment binge/purge symptoms, after variance associated with (a) initial severity of eating symptoms and (b) concurrent psyc

Comorbid generalized anxiety disorder and its association with quality of life in patients with major depressive disorder.

The comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is common and often predicts poorer outcomes than either disorder alone. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of comorbid GAD and its association with quality of life (QOL) among MDD patients. A total of 1225 psychiatric outpatients were screened using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Those who scored ≥8 on the HADS were interviewed using DSM-IV criteria by two senior psychiatrists. Patients diagnosed with MDD were further assessed using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, Soci
