An unusual cause of chest pain in a young man: bronchogenic cysts and their cardiac manifestations.

We report a case of a 24-year-old man who presented with chest pain and electrocardiographic evidence of myocardial ischaemia. An abnormal structure located behind the heart on the urgent transthoracic echocardiogram and a computed tomography scan of the mediastinum led to prompt surgery with eventual resection of the lesion. The histology revealed fragments of connective tissue covered by squamous epithelium and ciliated epithelium, consistent with a bronchogenic cyst. The case study is accompanied by a literature review of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of bronchogenic cysts and …

Extrapleural thoracoscopic excision of a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst in a patient with dense pleural adhesions.

We report the case of a 70-year-old man with dense pleural adhesions who underwent an excision of a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) through an extrapleural approach. The VATS approach for the diagnostic and therapeutic excision of a mediastinal tumor is easier and safer than an intrapleural approach if a patient has dense pleural adhesions.

A rare case of pulmonary bronchogenic cyst associated with bronchial atresia in the same lobe.

A rare case of 49-year-old woman having pulmonary bronchogenic cyst associated with bronchial atresia in the same lobe was presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by aortography and operation specimen. Three-dimensional reconstructed images of computed tomography clearly demonstrated the defference between mucoid impaction of bronchial trees in the left S9 not communicating with hilar bronchus and the cyst in the left S10 oppressing surrounding vessels.

[Iodine 131 uptake by a bronchogenic cyst in a patient with differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid gland].

BACKGROUND: After thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid carcinoma, extracervical uptake of iodine 131 is suggestive of metastasic dissemi … recurrence or lymph node metastasis, the mass was excised. The histology diagnosis was mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. DISCUSSION: To date, iodine uptake in a bronchogenic cyst has not been reported among other false-positives previously described. The pathophysiology of this iodine 131 uptake in a bronchogenic cyst is still unknown: the presence of NIS symporter …

Case Report: A rare case of gastric cardia bronchogenic cyst: diagnostic challenges and EUS findings with elevated cyst-fluid tumor markers.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital foregut malformations that most commonly occur in the thoracic cavity, whereas involvement of the gastric cardia is exceptionally uncommon. We report the case of a 36-year-old man who presented with abdominal distension and was found to have a cystic lesion adjacent to the gastric cardia. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a well-circumscribed, non-enhancing cystic mass, but the exact origin and nature of the lesion remained uncertain. Endoscopic ultrasound showed a 4.5 × 5.0 cm homogeneous hypoechoic lesion …

Paratracheal air cyst and bronchogenic cyst in patients with esophageal cancer who received thoracoscopic esophagectomy: A case series of three patients.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mediastinal cystic lesions, such as paratracheal air cyst (PTAC) and bronchogenic cyst (BC), are rare anomaly usually found incidentally in thoracic imaging. Special attention is needed in the case of thoracic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: All three patients were male, 71, 73, and 76 years old. Preoperative CT showed each had a lobular cystic lesion at the right posterolateral side of trachea in the thoracic outlet 11, 14, and 19 mm in size, respectively, with air density and tracheal communication, leading to a diagnosis of PTACs. An oval cystic lesion, 7 mm in siz…

[Excision of a Rapidly Enlarged Bronchogenic Cyst Infected after Endoscopic Ultrasound-guided Fine Needle Aspiration].

We report the case of a 75-year-old woman who developed acute mediastinitis from an infected bronchogenic cyst due to endoscopic ultrasound-guided transesophageal fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) for making diagnosis. The patient developed fever, chest pain, and discomfort after EUS-FNA. A repeat chest computed tomography( CT) demonstrated a rapidly increased size of the mediastinal mass. Thoracoscopic surgery was performed five days after EUS-FNA and the mediastinal mass was excised successfully. Postoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst.

Giant Intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst associated with congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Large intracardiac bronchogenic cysts are rare mediastinal masses. However, they must always be considered in the differential diagnosis of heart failure with abnormal chest X-ray. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 60-year-old female patient with de novo atrial fibrillation, heart failure and a very large intrapericardial mass. The patient underwent successful surgical resection, with pathological findings confirming a bronchogenic cyst. CONCLUSIONS: Large bronchogenic cysts located intrapericardially are very rare. However, they should be included in the differential diagnosis of …

[Esophageal bronchogenic cyst: an uncommon cause of dysphagia in adults. Case report and literature review].

BACKGRONUND: Bronchogenic cysts result from abnormal budding of the primitive tracheobronchial tube and are rare congenital cystic lesions. The location of the cyst depends on the embryological stage of abnormal budding. Although periesophageal bronchogenic cysts have been frequently reported, a completely intramural cyst is very rare. CLINICAL CASE: A 42-year-old female patient, a three-month course with retrosternal pain associated with food intake, accompanied by intermittent dysphagia to solids. Esophagogram, high resolution thoracic tomography and endoscopic ultrasound are performed, con…

Video-assisted segmental resection of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst mimicking a middle mediastinal cystic tumor.

We report a case of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst that radiologically mimicked a cystic tumor of the middle mediastinum. During video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, the lesion was confirmed to be in the lung parenchyma rather than in the mediastinum. A video-assisted thoracoscopic anterior basal segmentectomy was eventually performed, and an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst was the diagnosis based on histology.

Lipoma-Like Bronchogenic Cyst in the Right Chest Sidewall: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Bronchogenic cyst most commonly occurs in the mediastinum, followed by the lung. We admitted a 59-year female patient with bronchogenic cyst being uniquely located on the right chest wall of the parietal pleura. Preoperative CT scan showed a local low-density lesion on the right chest wall. The lesion was removed by the thoracoscopic surgery. During the surgical resection, the lesion was observed to be located on the right chest wall. The lesion was surrounded by adipose tissue and covered with entire parietal pleura, which looks like lipoma. Pathological examination demonstrated that the lesi…

Intact bronchogenic cyst presenting as a lung mass provoking a pleural effusion: a rare presentation.

This case report describes a 49 year old woman with an intra-parenchymal bronchogenic cyst masked on chest x-ray examination by a pleural effusion. The cyst was intact. It is likely that the cyst provoked the pleural effusion by repetitive mechanical irritation of the pleura. At surgery, the cyst was removed and the pleural effusion drained without recurrence. The cyst was unilocular and measured 8.5 x 7.0 x 0.8 cm with a smooth and glistening lining. It was filled with approximately 300 ml of clear fluid. Microscopic examination confirmed the bronchogenic cyst. This is the first case of an in…

A retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst mimicking adrenal tumour in an adult: is differential diagnosis truly possible?

Bronchogenic cysts are developmental abnormalities of the primitive foregut resulting from aberrant budding from the ventral diverticulum. A retroperitoneal position for a bronchial cyst is extremely unusual and should be differentiated from other neoplastic lesions. Although histologically they can be differentiated from other lesions, bronchial cysts may show various pathological patterns of differentiation that may cause confusion in differentiating them from cystic teratomas. This is a case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst featuring uncommon histological findings, which raises the qu…

Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst presenting as adrenal tumor in adult successfully treated with retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery.

A bronchogenic cyst in the retroperitoneum is rare in adults. A 41-year-old woman presented with an incidental left retroperitoneal mass that was suspicious for an adrenal tumor. Retroperitoneal laparoscopic excision and complete resection were performed. The pathologic examination confirmed a bronchogenic cyst in the retroperitoneum. We present the case with review of the relevant published data.

The distinction of bronchogenic cyst from metastatic testicular teratoma: a light microscopic and immunohistochemical study.

Bronchogenic cyst (BC), a rare developmental abnormality of the primitive foregut and usually found above the diaphragm, can occur in the retroperitoneum and other unusual locations where distinction from metastatic teratoma is essential. We studied 22 BCs and 34 teratomas metastatic to the retroperitoneum in men. Of 22 BCs, 17 (77%) showed well or moderate architectural differentiation toward normal tracheobronchial structures, whereas none of the teratomas did. In addition, 20 (91%) of the BCs had respiratory-type epithelium and none had enteric-type epithelium. Immature elements, atypia, an…

Unusual bronchopulmonary foregut malformation associated with pericardial defect: bronchogenic cyst communicating with tubular esophageal duplication.

We report a case of unusual bronchopulmonary foregut malformation composed of a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst with sequestrated lung tissue and communicating tubular esophageal duplication associated with complete pericardial defect. A 18-yr. old man, who had suffered from dry cough and mild dyspnea, was admitted because of an incidentally detected chest mass. A computed tomography scan demonstrated a cystic mass with an air fluid level connected with esophagus in the middle mediastinum. The surgically resected mass was a pleural invested accessory lobe of the lung (8.0 x 7.0 x 4.5 cm) connect…

Case report: the computed tomographic features of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst rupture into the bronchial tree.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies which occur most commonly within the mediastinum. They may become complicated by fistula formation with the bronchial tree. We report a case of an adult male where such a complication occurred between the time of the patient's chest radiograph and his examination by computed tomography (CT). We believe that this is the first reported CT demonstration of an air-fluid level within a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst, in a typical site, presumed to be caused by rupture into the bronchial tree.

Beyond rhythm disorder: a rare case report of a young patient with mediastinal bronchogenic cyst.

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts are sporadic congenital tumors, accounting for approximately 10%-15% of all mediastinal masses. In most cases, they remain asymptomatic. We present a case of a young man with new-onset atrial fibrillation caused by extra cardiac compression of the left atrium by mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. We report the first documented case in our country of a patient with a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst presenting with cardiac symptoms. CASE SUMMARY: A 39-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with palpitations, dyspnea, and tachycardia that devel…
