Intraneural growth of a capillary haemangioma of the cauda equina.

Solitary intraneural haemangiomas are very rare. A case of intraneural capillary haemangioma involving two nerve roots of the cauda equina i … vessels, reticularly arranged with normal nerve fascicles dispersed within the nodules of clustered capillaries. The present case of an intraneural capillary haemangioma of the cauda equina appears to be one of the first reported examples of this entity in the world's literature. The clinical presentation, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic options of intr …

Role of progesterone in capillary permeability in hyperstimulated rats.

The role of progesterone in capillary permeability, which may be causally related to the pathophysiology of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), was investigated in immature rats. A total of 96 female Wistar rats aged 22 days were given 10 IU of equine chorionic gonadotrophin daily for 4 consecutive days, and given 30 IU of human chorionic gonadotrophin on the fifth day to produce hyperstimulated manifestations. On the sixth day, groups of 12 rats each received RU486 at a dose of 0, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 or 20 mg/kg (groups 1-7), or RU486 at 5 mg/kg combined with 6alpha-methyl-17alpha-hydroxy

Brain capillary lesions produced by cocaine in rats.

In the last 20 years, acute and chronic cocaine addiction has increased among young and adult people. The effects of cocaine on brain vasculature of young animals have not been histologically studied in depth. In the present study, we report the lesions of brain capillaries, including the choroid plexus, produced by chronic cocaine administration, in adult Wistar rats receiving i.p., 30 mg/kg/day of aqueous cocaine hydrochloride solution. Rats were sacrificed after several days of treatment. Histopathological examination of capillaries from different brain regions and cerebellum was performed …

Biclonal Sézary syndrome with capillary leak syndrome.

Sézary syndrome is a rare, usually monoclonal proliferation of T lymphoid cells. We report a case of this form of cutaneous T cell lymphoma with highly probable biclonality of neoplastic proliferation. Biclonality in malignant lymphoma is a rare feature, until now generally reported in B cell lymphoma. Its identification by accurate immunological studies could be of importance since one of the two populations can exhibit a less differentiated phenotype requiring a more aggressive therapeutic regimen than usual. The occurrence of anasarca in our patient was probably due to capillary leak syndro

Quantification of hemoglobin variants by capillary isoelectric focusing.

Capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) was used to identify and quantify major and minor hemoglobin (Hb) variants. Whole blood (approximately 10 microL required) hemolysate was analyzed with a commercial instrument equipped with a 50 microns (i.d.) x 27 cm coated capillary filled with 20 g/L ampholytes (pH 6-8) in 4 g/L methylcellulose (MC). Cathode and anode solutions were 20 mol/L NaOH and 100 mol/L H3PO4 in MC, respectively. Samples (approximately 40 nL) were applied via autosampler by low-pressure injection, focused for 3 min at 30 kV, and mobilized by simultaneous voltage and low pressure

[Capillary hemangioma of the nasal cavity. Apropos of a case].

The nasal haemangiomas are a very rare cause of epistaxis and nasal obstruction. We report a case of capillary haemangioma with the appearance of a large pedunculated nasal polyp, which was located in the middle area of the right nasal cavity's roof. We also report the clinical and histopathological findings, the differential diagnosis and the therapeutic approach of these benign angiomatous tumors.

Lobular capillary hemangioma (pyogenic granuloma) with satellitosis.

We describe a 43-year-old white man who rapidly developed multiple, extensive angiomatous lesions on the temple and scalp after excision of a solitary lobular capillary hemangioma. This is a well-recognized but rare event. Our case differs from previously reported examples in terms of the age of the patient, the location and extent of the lesions, the histologic features in the form of small foci of angiosarcoma-like infiltration, and possibly with respect to the response to therapeutic intervention. Because of the alarming clinical picture produced by multiple lobular capillary hemangiomas, i

Claudication induces systemic capillary endothelial swelling.

An in vivo model of intermittent claudication has been developed to investigate systemic reperfusion injury associated with transient muscle ischaemia. Rats were subjected to unilateral common iliac artery ligation and two weeks of intermittent hind limb muscle stimulation. Electron microscopy demonstrated a significantly increased percentage of swollen capillary endothelial cells both locally and systemically in these "claudicant" rats, compared with controls or those undergoing muscle stimulation or artery ligation alone. These results support human data suggesting that claudication induces

Capillary hemangioma in the cauda equina: neuroradiological findings.

A case of capillary hemangioma of the cauda equina is reported. Myelography with water-soluble contrast material showed a complete obstruction of the contrast column at the L1-L2 level. Neither plain nor intravenously enhanced CT revealed the tumor. Spinal angiography showed a feeding vessel to the tumor and a faint tumor stain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a mass lesion of slightly higher than cauda equina intensity, which was clearly enhanced with Gd-DTPA. MRI, especially Gd-DTPA-enhanced study, plays the most important role in the diagnosis of a spinal capillary hemangioma. Spina

Capillary refill--is it a useful predictor of hypovolemic states?

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the capillary refill test can correctly differentiate between hypovolemic and euvolemic emergency department patients. DESIGN: A prospective, nonrandomized, nonblinded time series. SETTING: The orthostatic and hypotensive patients were seen in a university hospital ED with 44,000 visits per year. Blood donors were studied in the hospital's blood donor center. TYPE OF PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-two adult ED patients who presented with a history suggestive of hypovolemia and either abnormal orthostatic vital signs (19) or frank hypotension (13), and 47 voluntee

[Vital findings in capillary microscopy in collagen diseases].

Microangiopathic changes in capillary architecture associated with collagen diseases can be visualized by vital capillary microscopy. In our study of 100 patients with collagen disease we found typical capillaroscopic images in 64%. Differentiation in subclasses showed the highest diagnostic value of this method in systemic sclerosis (77%) and rheumatoid arthritis (68%). It was lower in patients with Sharp- and CREST-syndrome (55%) and very low in systemic lupus erythematosus (33%). In summary, vital capillary microscopy is a valid method in non-invasive diagnostic of collagen diseases.

Capillary configuration in contracted muscles: comparative aspects.

We compared the degree of orientation (anisotropy) of capillaries in skeletal muscles of animals with large differences in oxygen needs and/or tolerance to hypoxia (mammals of different size; reptiles; birds; mammals native to high altitude; diving mammals). In terrestrial mammals, we found a substantial increase in capillary tortuosity with fiber shortening, in muscles with large differences in capillary density (capillary counts/fiber mm2 in transverse sections ranging 450-4350). There was no systematic difference in muscle capillary tortuosity with body size (mouse to pony), or with adaptat…

[Capillary hemangioma of the umbilical cord as a cause of polyhydramnios].

The authors report on an encapsulated, fibrous capillary hemangioma, 4 cm in diameter, located at the insertion of the umbilical cord, which caused a polyhydramnion in the 26th week of gestation. The diagnosis of capillary hemangioma was confirmed by multiple sonographic examinations. In the 27th week of gestation, 700 ml of amniotic fluid were drained by a single transabdominal amniocentesis. The child had to be delivered by cesarean section in the 36th week of gestation owing to a breech presentation in a primigravida mother and signs of respiratory placental insufficiency. No malformations

Capillary plugging by granulocytes and the no-reflow phenomenon in the microcirculation.

Granulocytes are large, stiff viscoelastic cells that adhere naturally to the vascular endothelium. On their passage through the capillary network they have to be deformed, and recent evidence indicates that they may impose a significant hemodynamic resistance. The entry time of granulocytes into capillaries is about three orders of magnitude longer than that for red cells. Inside the capillary the granulocytes move with a lower velocity than red cells. Under conditions when the capillary perfusion pressure is reduced and/or elevated levels of inflammatory products are present that increase th…

Capillary and venous bilirubin values. Are they really different?

We measured total serum bilirubin values in paired capillary and venous samples from 79 untreated jaundiced newborn infants (group 1) and in 29 infants who were receiving phototherapy (group 2). While bilirubin values from the two sites correlated significantly for both groups, capillary samples underestimated venous bilirubin values when the latter exceeded 170 mumol/L (10 mg/dL) (mean and 95% confidence limits: group 1, -15.1 mumol/L [-0.9 mg/dL] and -24.7 to -5.5 mumol/L [-1 to -0.3 mg/dL]; group 2, -10.3 mumol/L [-0.6 mg/dL] and -17.1 to -3.4 mumol/L [-1 to -0.2 mg/dL]). [Capillary-venous angioma of the temporo-masseteric region].

Angioma of temporomasseteric region is a capillariovenous malformation in the temporomasseteric groove which can extend into adjacent facial zones. It forms a well defined clinicopathological entity. Clinically these angiomas present typical signs of a slow output capillariovenous angioma. Several patients were investigated by standard radiology, tomography and scan imaging, allowing detection of bony, particularly maxillary deformities, and by preoperative laboratory examinations. Treatment is by first stage embolization in situ of the angioma using sclerosing agents to reduce risk of periope

Pitfalls in the interpretation of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure.

The measurement and interpretation of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) is often vital to the correct management of patients. In this article some pitfalls associated with PCWP measurement are discussed. The physiology of PCWP preload and the Starling curve are described. PCWP indirectly measures left ventricular end-diastolic volumes: the interpretation of this correlation is altered under certain circumstances, and these are described.
