Estimating the COVID-19 Spread Through Real-time Population Mobility Patterns: Surveillance in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: On January 21, 2020, the World Health Organization reported the first case of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, which rapidly evolved to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the virus has also rapidly spread among Latin American, Caribbean, and African countries. OBJECTIVE: The first aim of this study is to identify new emerging COVID-19 clusters over time and space (from January 21 to mid-May 2020) in Latin American, Caribbean, and African regions, using a prospective space-time scan measurement approach. The second aim is to assess the impact of real-time population

Three scleractinian coral diseases in Dominica, West Indies: distribution, infection patterns and contribution to coral tissue mortality.

Coral diseases have been documented in many areas of the Caribbean, but studies in the eastern Caribbean region have been lacking. The prevalence, distribution patterns and contribution to the mortality of coral tissue by black band discase (BBD), white plague (WP) and dark spots disease (DSD) were examined at five reef sites along the west coast of Dominica. 185 of the 325 diseased colonies recorded between March and August 2000, in a survey area of 5884 m2, were WP. This disease contributed to 89% of the total 4.08 m2 of tissue mortality caused by diseases during the survey period. WP also a…

Global variations in the burden of SARS-CoV-2 infection and its outcomes in pregnant women by geographical region and country's income status: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of COVID-19 and its impact varied between countries and regions. Pregnant women are at high risk of COVID-19 complications compared with non-pregnant women. The magnitude of variations, if any, in SARS-CoV-2 infection rates and its health outcomes among pregnant women by geographical regions and country's income level is not known. METHODS: We performed a random-effects meta-analysis as part of the ongoing PregCOV-19 living systematic review (December 2019 to April 2021). We included cohort studies on pregnant women with COVID-19 reporting maternal (mortality, int

Immunodeficiency, centromeric region instability and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome diagnosed in an adult who is now a long-term survivor.

We describe a 42-year-old British man of Indo-Caribbean origin with immunodeficiency, centromeric region instability and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome. Most patients with ICF syndrome die of infection at a young age, usually in the first or second decade of life. The patient was born 3.5 weeks premature to non-consanguineous parents. He had a mild bird-like face abnormality, but had no other congenital malformations, cognitive impairment or developmental delays. He had recurrent ear and chest infections during childhood and developed bronchiectasis. Investigations revealed IgG, IgA and IgM d

Impact of changes to policy for Mexican risk travel on Canadian blood donor deferrals.

BACKGROUND: Travel to malaria risk areas such as Mexico is a common source of donor deferral in Canada. On February 21st, 2011 the deferrable regions in Mexico were revised to permit donation if donors travelled to the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, a popular ocean-side resort area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Canadian travel data and malaria deferral rates since 2007 were plotted to examine trends. Deferral records in one centre were accessed from January to April, 2011 to tabulate travel destinations of deferred donors immediately before and after the change. RESULTS: Travel to Mexico and the C

Hepatitis E virus infection in Latin America: a review.

Data reported during recent years reveal the complex picture of the epidemiology of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in Latin America. Whereas in countries like Argentina and Brazil is almost identical to the characteristic of most countries from North America and Europe, HEV in the Caribbean and Mexico involves the water-borne, non-zoonotic viral genotypes responsible for epidemics in Asia and Africa. Nevertheless, Latin America has been considered a highly endemic region for hepatitis E in the scientific literature, a generalization that ignores the above complexity. In addition, reports fr

New Insights into the Occurrence and Toxin Profile of Ciguatoxins in Selvagens Islands (Madeira, Portugal).

Ciguatoxins (CTXs), endemic from tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific and Indian Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, have caused several human poisonings during the last decade in Europe. Ciguatera fish poisonings (CFP) in Madeira and Canary Islands appear to be particularly related with consumption of fish caught close to Selvagens Islands, a Portuguese natural reserve composed of three small islands that harbor high fish biomass. In this study, fish specimens considered as potential vectors of CTXs were caught in Madeira and Selvagens archipelagos for toxins determination via sensitive l

Population genetics of New World screwworm from the Caribbean: insights from microsatellite data.

Diseases affecting livestock can have a significant impact on animal productivity and on trade of live animals, meat and other animal products, which, consequently, affects the overall process of economic development. The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is an important parasitic insect pest in Neotropical regions. This species has been successfully eradicated from North and most of Central America by the sterile insect technique, but continues to affect the development of the livestock sector in most Caribbean economies. Here, we provide some i

Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Wastewaters in Barbados, West Indies.

There have been few reports in the peer-reviewed literature on the levels of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in municipal wastewater from the Caribbean region. In this study of wastewater collected from two wastewater treatment plants in Barbados, caffeine and ibuprofen were detected at µg/L concentrations, whereas two steroid hormones (i.e. androstenedione, estrone) and several prescription pharmaceuticals were detected at ng/L concentrations. Among drugs of abuse, benzoylecgonine (i.e. metabolite of cocaine), MDMA (i.e. Ecstasy) and MDA (i.e. 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine) were prese…

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from Guadeloupe (French West Indies) are able to transmit yellow fever virus.

The recent yellow fever epidemic in Brazil has raised the concern of outbreaks in neighboring countries, particularly in the Caribbean region where the vector Aedes aegypti is predominant. This threat comes from the past when in the Americas, this disease caused devastating urban epidemics. We report the vector competence of Ae. aegypti from Guadeloupe for yellow fever virus by determining different parameters describing virus infection, dissemination, and transmission. The results indicate that Ae. aegypti Guadeloupe are susceptible to yellow fever virus with viral particles detected in mosqu…

[Melioidosis: a poorly known tropical disease].

A 35 year-old man was admitted to the hospital for fever upon returning from the Caribbean area. He died 48 hours later, after developing pulmonary lesions that were complicated by multi-organ failure, despite rapid diagnosis of melioidosis by mass spectrometry on blood cultures. Melioidosis is a rare bacterial disease in the traveller that is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. Although the clinical presentation is variable, pneumonia is the most frequent finding. Diagnosis may be considered in travellers returning from tropical and subtropical regions, especially during rainy seasons. Accor

Tribulations of the Last Mile: Sides from a Regional Program.

In Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, the number of cases of dog-mediated human rabies is at its lowest since the onset of the Regional Program for Rabies Elimination in 1983, a commitment from LAC countries to eliminate dog-mediated rabies coordinated by the Pan American Health Organization. Despite minor setbacks, the decline in the number of human cases has been constant since 1983. While many LAC countries have significantly reduced rabies to a level where it is no longer significant public health concern, elimination has proven elusive and pockets of the disease remain across t

[Epidemiology of human bilharziasis].

Schistosomiasis is endemic in three continents: Africa, where Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni and S. intercalatum are present; tropical America and some of the the Caribbean islands, where the only parasite of this type is S. mansoni; Mediterranean Asia (S. haematobium, S. mansoni) and the Far-East (S. japonicum, S. mekongi). Schistosomal infestation is distributed in foci of warying size and significantly differs in prevalence, intensity and therefore morbidity from one region to another. Despite the successes obtained in the neutralization of certain foci, the great plasticity of the hos

Linkage analyses in Caribbean Hispanic families identify novel loci associated with familial late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: We performed linkage analyses in Caribbean Hispanic families with multiple late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) cases to identify regions that may contain disease causative variants. METHODS: We selected 67 LOAD families to perform genome-wide linkage scan. Analysis of the linked regions was repeated using the entire sample of 282 families. Validated chromosomal regions were analyzed using joint linkage and association. RESULTS: We identified 26 regions linked to LOAD (HLOD ≥3.6). We validated 13 of the regions (HLOD ≥2.5) using the entire family sample. The strongest signal w

Post-pandemic impact on the epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease: consensus statement from the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE).

INTRODUCTION: The Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE) convened a multidisciplinary expert panel to assess the post-pandemic epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in Latin America and the Caribbean. The COVID-19 pandemic initially reduced IPD incidence due to non-pharmaceutical interventions, but subsequent relaxation of restrictions, coupled with immunization gaps, led to a resurgence of pneumococcal infections. The consensus statement reviews literature and regional surveillance data to analyze how disrupted vaccination programs, socioeconomic inequit

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Caribbean Patients With Adult T-Cell Lymphoma/Leukemia at Two Affiliated New York City Hospitals.

PURPOSE: Adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATL) is a rare and aggressive peripheral T-cell malignancy caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1 infection, which occurs in areas of high prevalence, predominantly in Japan and the Caribbean basin. Most ATL literature is derived from Japan and little is published about Caribbean patients. We describe the clinicopathologic characteristics and treatment outcomes of our Caribbean patients who have ATL at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of
