Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench) is a widely used medicinal and ornamental plant. In the present study, the callus embryogenesis was examined using benzyl adenine (BA) at three levels (3, 4, 5 mg L-1), 1-Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) at three levels (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mg L-1) with or without activated charcoal (1 g L-1), coconut milk (50 ml L-1) and casein hydrolysate (50 mg L-1) in the MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) medium. Esophageal bezoars caused by enteral nutrition are rare but may occur when casein-containing formulas solidify under conditions of impaired esophageal clearance. To determine the effects of different sources of protein on the growth performance of newly weaned piglets, 72 newly weaned piglets were randomly assigned to three groups fed different diets (soya bean, casein and dried distillers' grain with solubles (DDGS) feeds). Two atypical cases of colitis due to cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) are reported, affecting preterm infants. One developed a toxic dilatation of the colon and responded well to a casein hydrolysate based feed. The lithogenic diet generally used for production of gallstones in hamsters contains 20% casein. In four separate experiments the 20% casein diet was compared with one containing 20% soy protein. All other components were kept constant. Two of the four experiments were of 45-day duration, one of 70 days and one of 100 days. We have measured IgG1, 2, 3 and 4 subclass antibodies to gliadin and casein in normal controls, treated and untreated coeliac patients. The amount of antibody in each subclass was determined separately as a titre and as a concentration, by reference to a standard curve. Both methods of quantitation, carried out in separate assays, yielded comparable results (IgG antibody r = 0.86, IgG1 antibody r = 0.89).
