Feline Epitheliotropic Mastocytic Conjunctivitis in 15 Cats.

Mast cell infiltration occurs in malignant, inflammatory (eg, allergic, infectious), and idiopathic disease processes in humans and animals. Here, we describe the clinical and histological features of a unique proliferative conjunctivitis occurring in 15 cats. Ocular specimens were examined histologically, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1) was performed on ocular tissues obtained from 10 cats. Cats had a median age of 8 years (range: 7 months-17.5 years). The known median duration of ocular lesions prior to biopsy was 4 months (range: 1 week-3 years). Ocular …

Hypochloremia in cats - prevalence and associated diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence and possible causes of hypochloremia in the local hospital cat population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study consisting of two parts. Data were collected from the local electronic medical records database using the search terms "chloride" and "cats" (part A), and "blood gas analysis" and "cats" (part B). The medical records of the hypochloremic cats were then reviewed to determine prior treatment or infusions and to identify major underlying disease processes. Part A included an age and gender matched non-hypochloremic control group, whereas in pa…

Management of acute heart failure in cats.

Acute heart failure in cats represents a complex clinical situation in feline practice and this review has been designed to focus on the description of acute heart failure in cats, the diagnostic approach and clinical management of acutely decompensated feline cardiac patients. The authors acknowledge the lack of scientific evidence regarding many treatments used for heart disease in cats, and hence their approach may differ from recommendations given by other cardiologists. Every individual cardiac cat is also different, and it is important that all treatments are carefully tailored to the in…

Endocrine Pancreas in Cats With Diabetes Mellitus.

Pancreatic amyloidosis and loss of α and β cells have been shown to occur in cats with diabetes mellitus, although the number of studies currently available is very limited. Furthermore, it is not known whether pancreatic islet inflammation is a common feature. The aims of the present study were to characterize islet lesions and to investigate whether diabetic cats have inflammation of the pancreatic islets. Samples of pancreas were collected postmortem from 37 diabetic and 20 control cats matched for age, sex, breed, and body weight. Histologic sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin…

Calcified amorphous tumors (CATs) of the heart.

Intracavitary cardiac masses include neoplastic and nonneoplastic masses, which may share overlapping clinical symptomatology, physical examination findings, and or imaging characteristics. Definitive diagnosis of a cardiac mass is usually made on surgical excision and histological examination. In this article, we focus on one of the rare nonneoplastic cardiac mass, namely, calcified amorphous tumors. We present a series of three patients, an 80-year-old female who presented to the hospital for evaluation of a near syncope event, a 69-year-old female who presented for evaluation of palpitation

Nonthymoma-associated exfoliative dermatitis in 18 cats.

BACKGROUND: Exfoliative dermatitis has been described in cats as a paraneoplastic skin disease associated with thymoma. There are anecdotal reports of cases without thymoma, with various suspected aetiologies. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To identify common features, underlying causes, response to therapy and outcome of nonthymoma-associated exfoliative dermatitis in cats. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was carried out of cases presented to dermatology referral centres or cases submitted for histopathological examination. Detailed historical and clinical data were obtained and evaluated statistic…

Oral hypoglycemics in cats with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in cats. Similar to people, cats with diabetes mellitus often have type 2 disease. Oral hypoglycemic drugs can be a potential treatment option for affected cats, especially when cats or owners do not tolerate administration of injectable insulin. Several classes of oral hypoglycemic drugs have been evaluated in cats but these drugs have not been commonly used for treatment of diabetic cats. With the advent of newer oral hypoglycemic drugs, and a better understanding of diabetes mellitus in cats, further investigation may allow for better diabetic control f…

Idiopathic generalised tremor syndrome in two cats.

Two male neutered domestic shorthair cats were evaluated for generalised tremors. On neurological examination both cats showed whole-body tremors, worsening with stress. A mainly cerebellar disorder was suspected. Blood examination, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and electrophysiological examination of both cats and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in one cat were normal. Idiopathic generalised tremor syndrome (IGTS) was suspected owing to the exclusion of underlying causes and the clinical similarities with the syndrome in dogs. Treatment as recommended for dogs was initiated and resulte…

Bacterial reproductive pathogens of cats and dogs.

With the notable exception of Brucella canis, exogenous bacterial pathogens are uncommon causes of reproductive disease in cats and dogs. Most bacterial reproductive infections are endogenous, and predisposing factors for infection are important. This article reviews the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and public health significance of bacterial reproductive pathogens in cats and dogs.

Bartonellosis in cats: a role in uveitis?

Bartonellosis has been widely studied in human and veterinary medicine over the past two decades. Despite this fact, it remains an enigmatic disease in many ways. The causative bacteria, Bartonella spp, are transmitted to cats by fleas and thus the prevalence in cat populations, particularly in temperate climates, is high. Most cats, whether infected naturally or experimentally, remain asymptomatic. Thus, correlating the presence of the organism to clinical disease, including uveitis, in cats has been difficult. This review summarizes what is known of the transmission and pathogenesis of Barto…

Acute vomiting in cats: rational treatment selection.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: The control of nausea and vomiting in cats is important in order to prevent the development of food aversion, anorexia (with its associated complications of weight loss and dehydration), and hepatic lipidosis. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: There are several antiemetic drugs that are clinically effective in cats. Making a rational choice from the available options requires knowledge of the likely cause of the vomiting, and the mechanisms of action and side effects of each drug. For example, a drug such as prochlorperazine, which can cause sedation, may be a useful first-line choice…

Amylin reduces plasma glucagon concentration in cats.

Pancreatic amylin plays an important role in the control of nutrient fluxes and is an established therapy in human diabetes as it reduces post-prandial glucagon secretion and slows gastric emptying. Given the similar pathophysiology of human type-2 and feline diabetes mellitus, we investigated whether amylin reduces plasma glucagon levels in cats. Healthy cats were tested using an intravenous arginine stimulation test (IVAST), a meal response test with the test meal comprising 50% of average daily food intake, and an IV glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). Non-amyloidogenic rat amylin injected 5 mi…

Immunogenicity of Bartonella henselae P26 in cats.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) has an estimated prevalence of approximately 200,000 persons in the USA, and approximately 22,000 new cases occur annually. Cats are the natural carriers of Bartonella henselae, the agent for CSD. Zoonotic transmission of B. henselae can result in CSD in immunocompetent humans and bacillary angiomatosis in immunosuppressed humans. Infection in cats often goes undetected. Development of a vaccine to prevent feline infection is warranted to reduce the prevalence of infection in the feline population and to decrease the potential for zoonotic transmission. One of the imm…

Dirofilaria immitis in cats: diagnosis and management.

Imaging and laboratory studies can help with the diagnosis of heartworm disease in cats, but no test is definitive. Furthermore, even when the diagnosis can be reliably established, therapy directed at the heartworms does little to help the cat. Rather, management is directed at alleviating clinical signs, with an emphasis on prevention for all.
