Regional cerebral blood flow with intracranial mass lesions. Part I: Local alterations in cerebral blood flow.

Focal changes in the cat cerebral blood flow were studied by the technique of H2 polarography. Areas studied included the caudate nuclei, thalami and midbrain. A unilateral mass effect was created by inflation of an epidural balloon. A rapid decrease in regional cerebral blood flow was noted ipsilateral to the mass at very small balloon volumes. This was followed closely by contralateral supratentorial decrease in regional cerebral blood flow. The normal midbrain blood flow was found to be preserved until total decompensation (herniation) occurred.

Regional cerebral blood flow with intracranial mass lesions. Part II: Autoregulation in localized mass lesion.

Autoregulation of regional cerebral blood flow was evaluated in cats. In normal baseline situations autoregulation was invariably present. Concomitant to an enlarging mass, supratentorial loss of this protective mechanism was seen both ipsilateral and contralateral to the mass. There was relative preservation of midbrain autoregulation until very high balloon volumes were reached. There was no acute regulation upon balloon deflation.

Effects of intracerebroventricular L-DOPA on caudate unit firing.

Single units were recorded bilaterally from the caudate nuclei of cats before and after 50 microliter injections of either Merlis solution or L-DOPA (200 microgram) dissolved in Merlis into the left lateral cerebral ventricle. After injection of L-DOPA, but not Merlis solution, there was a period of unit silence in both caudates with an onset of about 10 min and a duration of 30-50 min. This period of caudate silence was coincident with a significant reduction of systolic blood pressure and heart rate. Upon resumption of unit firing in caudate, it was found that the interspike intervals on the

However, its pe … ity and preprandial gastric slow-wave rhythms (canonical r = 0.892, p = 0.004). Conclusions: In PD, caudate nucleus FC shows a preferential association with gastric rather than intestinal electrophysiological activity. Multivariate analyses further demonstrate a significant network-level association between lentiform nucleus connectivity and baseline gastric paci …

Striatal Atrophy in the Behavioural Variant of Frontotemporal Dementia: Correlation with Diagnosis, Negative Symptoms and Disease Severity.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is associated with changes in dorsal striatal parts of the basal ganglia (caudate nucleus and putamen), related to dysfunction in the cortico-striato-thalamic circuits which help mediate executive and motor functions. We aimed to determine whether the size and shape of striatal structures correlated with diagnosis of bvFTD, and measures of clinical severity, behaviour and cognition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging scans from 28 patients with bvFTD and 26 healthy controls were manually traced using image analys…

Synergic control in asymptomatic welders during multi-finger force exertion and load releasing while standing.

Motor synergies, i.e., neural mechanisms that organize multiple motor elements to ensure stability of actions, are affected by several neurological condition. Asymptomatic welders showed impaired synergy controlling the stability of multi-finger action compared to non-welders and this impairment was associated with microstructural damage in the globus pallidus. We further explored the effect of welding-related metal exposure on multi-finger synergy and extended our investigation to posture-stabilizing synergy during a standing task. Occupational, MRI, and performance-stabilizing synergies duri

Striatal responsiveness to reward under threat-of-shock and working memory load: A preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Reward and stress are important determinants of motivated behaviors. Striatal regions play a crucial role in both motivation a … ed activation was investigated in a priori three regions of interest, the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), caudate nucleus, and putamen. RESULTS: During anticipation, threat-of-shock or cognitive load did not affect striatal responsiveness to reward. Anticipated reward increased activation in the ventral and dorsal striatum. During feedback delivery, both threat-of-sho …

A complex mosaic of high-affinity kainate receptors in rat brain.

The significance for CNS function of glutamate-gated cation channels that exhibit high-affinity kainate sites is not understood. Such receptors, which on dorsal root ganglia and in recombinant systems exhibit currents that rapidly desensitize to kainate application, have not been detected electrophysiologically in the brain. However, a comparison of the distribution of mRNAs encoding five glutamate receptor subunits exhibiting high-affinity kainate sites (GluR-5-GluR-7, KA-1, and KA-2) indicates that high-affinity kainate receptors are most likely involved in all central neuronal circuits of t

TREM2 gene expression associations with Alzheimer's disease neuropathology are region-specific: implications for cortical versus subcortical microglia.

Previous post-mortem assessments of TREM2 expression and its association with brain pathologies have been limited by sample size. This study sought to correlate region-specific TREM2 mRNA expression with diverse neuropathological measures at autopsy using a large sample size (N = 945) of bulk RNA sequencing data from the Religious Orders Study and Rush Memory and Aging Project (ROS/MAP). TREM2 gene expression of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and caudate nucleus was assessed with respect to core pathology of Alzheimer's disease (amyloid-β, and tau), cerebrovasc…

Refractory status epilepticus seen in the early phase of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

A male patient in his 60s presented with subacute-onset progressively worsening encephalopathy, myoclonus, paranoia, behavioural changes, confusion and cognitive decline, all on a background of paranoid schizophrenia. Extensive investigations, including blood tests and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, were inconclusive. MRI of the brain demonstrated cortical ribboning, with high signals noted in the caudate nucleus and internal capsule bilaterally on T2/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and diffusion-weighted imaging. Electroencephalogram identified widespread sharp wave discharges consistent w…

Brain involvement in haemolytic-uraemic syndrome: MRI features of coagulative necrosis.

We describe radiological demonstration of brain involvement in haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) in two siblings with a very different clinical course. While the brother presented with a mild, reversible encephalopathy, his sister developed high-signal lesions in the cortex, putamen and caudate nucleus on T1-weighted images, seen as dense areas on CT. Biopsy revealed coagulative necrosis due to microthrombosis without haemorrhage, calcification or infection. These findings suggest a possible prognostic role for MRI in cases of encephalopathy due to HUS.

Neuropsychological and neuroradiological study of a case of early-onset Huntington's chorea.

The authors report a case of Huntington's disease in an 11-year-old boy with onset at six years of age. The neurological signs and symptoms were midway between the hyperkinetic and rigid forms of chorea. Intellectual development was characterized by a medium-grade deficit. MRI revealed marked atrophy of the head of the caudate nucleus, with diffuse hyperintensity of the putamen. The most characteristic neuropsychological feature was ideomotor apraxia. Neuropsychological and neuroradiological data are discussed in relation to the role of the basal nuclei and frontal cortex in the organization o…

Subcortical crossed aphasia: a case report.

A 74-year-old, right-handed woman suffered acute aphasia and left hemiplegia secondary to a cerebral infarction in the right cerebral hemisphere. The lesion was located deep in the parietal lobe and extended to the posterior limb of the internal capsule and the head of the caudate nucleus. The patient's aphasia was characterized by severe impairment in auditory and visual comprehension and auditory retention span, as well as by anomia, agraphia, and dyscalculia. She showed rapid recovery from her aphasia, with residual deficits in writing, naming, calculation, and memory.
