Removal of either parenchymal or intraventricular cysts in neurocysticercosis has traditionally necessitated operative intervention with its concomitant morbidity and mortality (L. Stepien and J. Chorobski, Arch Neurol Psychiat Chicago 1949;61:499-527; L. Stepien, J. Neurosurg 1962;19:505-13). To our knowledge, percutaneous parenchymal cyst aspiration to reduce mass effect has not been previously reported. We describe a case of successful CT-guided percutaneous thalamic cyst puncture and aspiration to reduce both obstructive hydrocephalus and raised intracranial pressure.

Leadless pacemakers have provided new treatment modalities that can be especially useful in patients with complex cardiac anatomy and contraindications toward other pacemaker approaches. The Aveir™ single-chamber (VR) leadless pacemaker (LP) (Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, IL) is a recently approved device that can be placed in the right ventricle for patients with bradycardia. In this case, we present a novel use for the device through placement in the atrium to control atrial flutter in a patient with a hypoplastic right ventricle.

The 2019 annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the European Hematology Association took place, respectively, in Chicago, Illinois, 31 May-4 June, and in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 13-16 June. At the meetings, results from key studies on the treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma with high-risk cytogenetics were presented. Our meeting report describes those studies and includes interviews with investigators and commentaries by Canadian hematologists about the potential impact on Canadian practice.

This commentary provides an overview of the 2024 Association of Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction annual conference: Empowering Change: From Evidence to Action in Addiction Care and Research, held from November 14 to 16, 2024, in Chicago. The conference featured 16 interactive workshops, 166 oral abstract presentations, and 120 poster presentations. From the preconference workshop to plenary sessions, paper, and poster presentations, there was a focus on practical approaches to implementing evidence-based practices in a variety of settings.

Increasing evidence exists that suggests associations between mental illness, homelessness, and criminal activity and arrest. This article describes a program for identifying and providing treatment and housing for homeless mentally ill veterans detained at the Cook County Jail in Chicago. Preliminary data are provided describing characteristics of the veterans assessed in the jail, as well as those veterans who follow up with services upon release. The usefulness of an urban jail as a site for outreach efforts targeting homeless mentally ill veterans is discussed.

The first Portuguese cases of a combination of Hb D and B0 thalassaemia are reported. The structure of the Hb variant was identified as Hb D Los Angeles, Punjab, Chicago, Portugal. The cases reported belong to one family living in the south of the country: a woman and her two sons. Twice, in two different generations, women with a Hb D gene, married men with B0 thalassaemia trait.
