Respiratory (especially pulmonary) and urinary infections of Cryptosporidium were diagnosed in four of 26 chickens from a layer flock. Macroscopically, the lungs had various degrees of yellowish white pneumonic foci. Occasionally caseous exudates were present in the lungs and air sacs. Histologically, there was marked epithelial hyperplasia in the air capillaries, atria, parabronchi, secondary bronchi and trachea. Chemoprophylaxis of Cryptosporidium baileyi infections was attempted by feeding 4 groups of chicks diets containing 3 mg of halofuginone/kg of feed, 60 mg of salinomycin/kg, 75 mg of lasalocid/kg, or 110 mg of monensin/kg. The severity and incidence of spinal lesions were manipulated in a line of chickens susceptible to scoliosis by varying their dietary intake of copper. A decrease in expression of the lesion was related to increased intake of copper. The change in expression, however, appeared to be related only indirectly to the defects in collagen cross-linking, maturation, and deposition known to be associated with dietary copper deficiency. Thus, a dietary constituent in the range of normal intakes may act as an environmental factor in the expression of scoliosis.

Differences were demonstrated in the transmissibility of two strains of avian influenza virus among chickens. One strain, A/duck/Victoria/76 (H7N6) spread quickly and infected all incontact chickens, whereas A/chicken/Victoria/75 (H7N6) spread slowly and failed to infect all incontact chickens. These strains were isolated in the same locality at about the same time in a region where the viruses, and the disease fowl plague, had not been previously recognised.

B-locus genotypes have been defined in Obese strain (OS) chickens that spontaneously develop autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT), and in White Leghorn Cornell C strain (CS) chickens from which the OS was selected. The B-locus influences SAT, and some possible mechanisms are discussed. Thymic abnormalities in OS, as contrasted with CB birds, are also discussed and may play a role in SAT, as may an intrinsic defect in the thyroid gland itself.
