Hypnotizability and dissociativity in sexually abused girls.

Research on the relation between hypnotizability and clinical dissociation has led to contradictory findings. Measures of hypnotizability an … ssociation was assessed using the Child Dissociative Checklist. Abuse variables were extracted from Child Protective Services reports. There were no significant differences in hypnotizability between abuse and control subjects. There were significant differences in clinical dissociation initially and on 1-year retest. Hypnotizability and clinical dissociation were only wea …

Clusters of out-of-home care trajectories and precarious school-to-work transitions: A Norwegian national register study.

BACKGROUND: Trajectories through child protection services involving out-of-home care (OHC) are diverse, yet studies of OHC and school-to-work transitions often overlook this heterogeneity. METHODS: Using monthly records for three complete Norwegian birth cohorts (1994-1996; N = 172,638), we identified five OHC trajectory clusters among individuals with OHC before age 18 (N = 4789). These clusters were based on placement timing, duration and type. Individuals without OHC were included as a non-OHC group. We examined how cluster membership, together with care instability, is associated with pr

BACKGROUND: Research using data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW) have consistently used the scale develop … ildren and adolescents who were between 6 and 15 years of age who had recently been investigated by child protective services due to a maltreatment report. The Frequency of False Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse: A Critical Review.

The rate of false allegations has been a topic of research spanning back to as early as the 1970s. Studies have often relied on data gathered by Child Protective Services workers and court administrators. Some researchers have also used hypothetical scenarios to estimate rates. However, given the plethora of sampling methods, there is a large variation in estimated rates of false allegations of sexual abuse depending on the data source and context of the allegation. Additionally, methodological problems such as unclear or invalid criteria used to judge truth or falsity of an allegation, unrepr…

How neglect and punitiveness influence emotion knowledge.

To explore whether punitive parenting styles contribute to early-acquired emotion knowledge deficits observable in neglected children, we observed 42 preschool children's emotion knowledge, expression recognition time, and IQ. The children's mothers completed the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scales to assess the recent use of three types of discipline strategies (nonviolent, physically punitive, and psychological aggression), as well as neglectful parenting. Fifteen of the children were identified as neglected by Child Protective Services (CPS) reports; 27 children had no record of CPS involv…

The burden of alcohol on health care during COVID-19.

Alcohol's impact on global health is substantial and of a similar order of magnitude to that from COVID-19. Alcohol now also poses specific concerns, such as increased risk of severe lung infections, domestic violence, child abuse, depression and suicide. Its use is unlikely to aid physical distancing or other preventative behavioural measures. Globally, alcohol contributes to 20% of injury and 11.5% of non-injury emergency room presentations. We provide some broad comparisons between alcohol-attributable and COVID-19-related hospitalisations and deaths in North America using most recent data.

An Empirical Investigation of Factors Affecting Perceived Quality and Well-Being of Children Using an Online Child Helpline.

Child helplines provide free, accessible, and confidential support for children suffering from issues such as violence and abuse. Helplines lack the barriers often associated with the use of many other health services; and for many children, the helpline is the first point of contact with any kind of child protection and an important venue to go to in times of socio-economic distress. For instance, more children attempt to call the helpline in times of high unemployment, and relatively more of those conversations are about violence. Empirical evidence is scarce regarding how to implement onlin

[Epidemiological study of noted children under 6 years of age in danger in medicosocial services in a French department (Ille et Vilaine)].

An epidemiological study was conducted during 1 year (1989) in a French department (Ille et Vilaine) on children under 6 years of age reported by local medico-social services as being at risk of child abuse or neglect. This involved 786 children, ie an incidence of 1/80 children under 6. Among these children, 282 (35.9%) presented with clinical signs possibly related to abuse; only nine were hospitalized after being reported, showing the limits of the hospital to detect child abuse or neglect. The psycho-social characteristics of the families, the sources and motives of the reports, the criter

Parental Attachment and Psychosocial Adjustment in Adolescents Exposed to Marital Conflict.

(1) Background: Interparental conflict is a phenomenon that poses a serious threat not only to the quality of life of the couple but also to the father-child relationship, mother-child relationship, and well-being of adolescents. This study examined the difference in parental attachment and adjustment in adolescents exposed to marital conflict versus those not exposed to parental conflicts in low-income areas. (2) Methods: 67 adolescents involved in Child Welfare Services (CWS) in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in southern Spain were examined. The sample was split into two groups according to th

Frequency of injuries in a voluntary program evaluating young children exposed to intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects 1 in 4 American women, and physical child abuse is reported to occur in 10-67 % of homes with IPV. Routine evaluation of physical abuse in IPV-exposed children is neither widespread nor informed by clinical guidelines. Thus, the true frequency of detectable injuries in IPV-exposed children remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of injuries in children <3-years-old reported for IPV to a regional child protective services (CPS) office. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, we reviewed encounters of c…

The Hidden Pandemic of Family Violence During COVID-19: Unsupervised Learning of Tweets.

BACKGROUND: Family violence (including intimate partner violence/domestic violence, child abuse, and elder abuse) is a hidden pandemic happening alongside COVID-19. The rates of family violence are rising fast, and women and children are disproportionately affected and vulnerable during this time. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide a large-scale analysis of public discourse on family violence and the COVID-19 pandemic on Twitter. METHODS: We analyzed over 1 million tweets related to family violence and COVID-19 from April 12 to July 16, 2020. We used the machine learning approach Latent D

Mothers with acute and chronic postpartum psychoses and impact on the mother-infant interaction.

BACKGROUND: Maternal postpartum psychoses pose a serious risk to the mother-infant interaction. It is unclear how different subtypes of postpartum psychosis, including acute and chronic, might differentially affect the mother-infant interaction. METHOD: A systematic search of electronic journal databases was performed. RESULTS: This systematic review yielded 17 studies with adequate overall study quality. They focused on child custody and involvement of social services as indirect indicators of the mother-infant interaction, observed mother-infant interactions as direct indicators, or potent

Socio-ecological factors associated with becoming street-connected among working and homeless children and youth in Namibia.

Although Southern Afrikan governments implement child protection programs, children and youth who work and/or live on the streets remain a persistent challenge. Guided by Ubuntu and Adaptive Calibration frameworks, this cross-sectional survey examined socioecological factors at individual, family and street levels to inform child protection interventions that is linked to the UN sustainable development goal 1 (SDG). Bivariate analyses of 217 purposively sampled street-connected participants aged 6 to 21 in urban Namibia showed that early adolescence (mean age 13.5) remains a high-risk period f
