The rabies epidemic in Trinidad of 1923 to 1937: an evaluation with a Geographic Information System.

BACKGROUND: Rabies, although not preeminent among current infectious diseases, continues to afflict humans with as many as 55,000 deaths annually. The case fatality rate remains the highest among infectious diseases, and medical treatments have proven ineffective. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes the rabies epidemic of 1929 to 1937 in Trinidad from a geographical perspective, using Geographic Information System (GIS) software as an analytical tool. SETTING: A small island developing country at a time when infectious diseases were rampant. METHODS: A review of the literature was undertaken, an

Bats that walk: a new evolutionary hypothesis for the terrestrial behaviour of New Zealand's endemic mystacinids.

BACKGROUND: New Zealand's lesser short-tailed bat Mystacina tuberculata is one of only two of c.1100 extant bat species to use a true walking gait when manoeuvring on the ground (the other being the American common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus). Mystacina tuberculata is also the last surviving member of Mystacinidae, the only mammalian family endemic to New Zealand (NZ) and a member of the Gondwanan bat superfamily Noctilionoidea. The capacity for true quadrupedal terrestrial locomotion in Mystacina is a secondarily derived condition, reflected in numerous skeletal and muscular specialization

Repeated detection of European bat lyssavirus type 2 in dead bats found at a single roost site in the UK.

In August 2007, European bat lyssavirus type 2 (EBLV-2) was isolated from a Daubenton's bat found at Stokesay Castle. In September 2008, another bat from the same vicinity of Stokesay Castle also tested positive for EBLV-2. This is the first occurrence of repeated detection of EBLV-2 from a single site. Here, we report the detection of low levels of viral RNA in various bat organs by qRT-PCR and detection of viral antigen by immunohistochemistry. We also report sequence data from both cases and compare data with those derived from other EBLV-2 isolations in the UK.

Cimex pipistrelli (Heteroptera, Cimicidae) and the dispersal propensity of bats: an experimental study.

Previous results have shown frequent movements of crevice-dwelling bats between different shelters. Low roost fidelity of some dwelling bat species reduces the reproductive success of ectoparasites. The question of whether high densities of bat bugs (Cimex pipistrelli) represent a cost for crevice-dwelling bats (Pipistrellus pygmaeus), resulting in roost switching, has been examined. Sessions in a volary equipped with two bat boxes were carried out. One of the boxes was loaded with ectoparasites (low and high densities), the other served as a control and new roost for bats, which left the load

Development of a real-time, differential RT-PCR TaqMan assay for lyssavirus genotypes 1, 5 and 6.

A number of RT-PCR methods have been reported for the detection of rabies and rabies-related viruses. Here, a single, closed tube, non-nested RT-PCR TaqMan assay to distinguish between Classical rabies virus and European bat lyssaviruses 1 and 2 in real time is described. The TaqMan assay is rapid, sensitive, specific and allows for the genotyping of unknown isolates concomitant with the RT-PCR. It can be applied quantitatively and the use of an internal control enables the quality of the isolated template to be assessed. The efficiency and dynamic range of the PCR has been established using i

Litomosoides yutajensis n. sp., first record of this filarial genus in a mormoopid bat.

Twenty-five bats were trapped in Yutaje (Amazonas, Venezuela) and examined for Litomosoides (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae). Of the nine recovered bat species, only Pteronotus parnelli was infected; it is a cave-dwelling species belonging to a family, Mormoopidae, which has not previously been included in the host range of the genus. The new species, L. yutajensis n. sp., has two median cephalic bosses covered with rugosities and differs from the 15 recognized species and subspecies from bats in several characters. Human rabies--Tennessee, 2002.

On August 31,2002, a boy aged 13 years residing in Franklin County, Tennessee, died from rabies encephalitis caused by a rabies virus variant associated with silver-haired and eastern pipistrelle bats. This report summarizes the investigation by the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH). Persons should avoid direct contact with bats, other wildlife, and stray or ill domestic animals; however, if direct contact with bats has occurred, exposed persons should see their health-care provider, and the exposure should be reported to local public health officials.

Australian bat lyssavirus infection: a second human case, with a long incubation period.

In December 1998, a 37-year-old Queensland woman died from a rabies-like illness, 27 months after being bitten by a flying fox (fruit bat). Molecular techniques enabled diagnosis of infection with Australian bat lyssavirus (ABL), the second human case to be recognised and the first to be acquired from a flying fox. It must be assumed that any bat in Australia could transmit ABL; anyone bitten or scratched by a bat should immediately wash the wounds thoroughly with soap and water and promptly seek medical advice.

Adiposity and androstenedione production in relation to delayed ovulation in the Indian bat, Scotophilus heathi.

Observations on body weight, circulating androstenedione concentrations and morphology of ovarian stroma were made in Scotophilus heathi during the period of delayed ovulation to make a comparison with polycystic ovarian syndrome in women. Body weight of bats increased from a level of 31.00 +/- 0.30 g in August and reached a peak of 45.00 +/- 0.46 g in November. This increase in body weight was due to accumulation of adipose tissue. The body weight declined gradually from December onwards and finally reached a basal level in March. The circulating androstenedione concentration showed a gradual

Melatonin rhythms and pineal structure in a tropical bat, Anoura geoffroyi, that does not use photoperiod to regulate seasonal reproduction.

It has been hypothesized that pineal structure and function might differ between temperate zone and tropical species of mammals because of lower amplitudes of seasonal change in photoperiod and, in some areas, less seasonal climatic variation. Anoura geoffroyi produce a single offspring in November or December of each year on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, at 10 degrees N latitude in the deep tropics. Previous work has shown that this population lacks reproductive responses to photoperiod, and must be enforcing seasonal breeding using a non-photoperiodic cue. Anoura geoffroyi have a minute,

Histoplasmosis--Kentucky, 1995.

Histoplasmosis is an infection resulting from inhalation of spores from the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum; the condition primarily affects the lungs. During August 1995, the Department for Health Services, Kentucky Cabinet for Human Resources (KDHS), and local public health officials investigated two unrelated outbreaks of acute histoplasmosis in eastern Kentucky. This report summarizes preliminary findings of the investigations of these outbreaks.

Immediate and chronic changes in responses of somatosensory cortex in adult flying-fox after digit amputation.

The somatosensory cortex of adult mammals has been shown to have a capacity to reorganize when inputs are removed by cutting afferent nerves or amputating a part of the body. The area of cortex that would normally respond to stimulation of the missing input can become responsive to inputs from other parts of the body surface. Although a few animals have been studied with repeat recording, no attempt has been made to follow the time-course of changes at cortical loci and the immediate effects of a small amputation have not been reported. We have followed the changes in response in the primary s

Contribution of bats to the maintenance of Histoplasma capsulatum in a cave microfocus.

Bracken Cave, a large natural cavern located 25 miles northeast of San Antonio, Texas, serves as nursery roost for millions of Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis). Ten days after spending several hours in the cave in early May 1979, three graduate students presented with signs and symptoms compatible with acute pulmonary histoplasmosis. A study was initiated to determine the presence and location of Histoplasma capsulatum in the cave and its inhabitants. The fungus was cultured directly from guano at five of nine sites sampled. Sentinel mice left for several hours at one of three

Lyssaviruses and rabies: current conundrums, concerns, contradictions and controversies.

Lyssaviruses are bullet-shaped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA viruses and the causative agents of the ancient zoonosis rabies. Africa … All mammals are believed to be susceptible to rabies virus infection. Besides reservoirs among the Chiroptera, meso-carnivores also serve as major historical hosts and are represented among the canids, raccoons, skunks, mongooses, and ferret badgers.  Perpetuating as a disease of nature with the mammalian central nervous system as niche, host breadth alone …

Genetic diversity of alpha and betacoronaviruses in cave and temple-roosting bats in Vientiane Province, Lao PDR.

The emergence of MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV-1, and SARS-CoV-2 highlights the significant public health and economic threats posed by coronaviruses. In Lao PDR, SARS-CoV-2-related bat coronaviruses capable of binding to human ACE2 receptors have been found in northern regions, but little is known about coronavirus diversity in anthropized environments like temples. This study investigated coronavirus circulation, diversity, and prevalence in bats from caves and temples in Vientiane Province, Lao PDR. A total of 648 guano samples (505 Chaerephon plicatus, 100 Hipposideros spp., 43 Taphozous spp.) were c
