Auditory nerve-brain stem evoked potentials in cats during manipulation of the cerebral perfusion pressure.

In order to study the effects of various degrees of cerebral ischemia on the auditory nerve-brain stem evoked potentials (BAEP), the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), defined as the difference between mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and intracranial pressure (ICP), was systemically manipulated in anesthetized, paralyzed and ventilated cats. The CPP was varied by decreasing MAP, either by hemorrhage or by the infusion of a vasodilating drug, and elevating ICP by infusion of mock CSF into the cisterna magna, or by MAP depression and ICP elevation simultaneously. Even though the lower limit o…

Pressor response induced by local anaesthetics perfused through the cerebral ventricles of dogs.

1 The antihistamines mepyramine and halopyramine which have local anesthetic properties, produced a rise in arterial blood pressure followed by a fall, similar to that seen with procaine, when perfused in a 10 mg/ml solution from the lateral ventricle to the cisterna magna in dogs. 2 The pressor response produced by procaine perfused through the cerebral ventricle is due to an action on structures situated in the caudal half of the floor of the fourth ventricle because a pressor response was obtained when a few microlitres of a 50 mg/ml solution of procaine were applied to a small area of the …

Marked Reduction of Cerebral Vasospasm with Intrathecal Urokinase Infusion Therapy after Endovascular Coil Embolization of the Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Case Series.

Delayed cerebral vasospasms after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are a risk factor for poor prognosis after successful treatment of ruptured intracranial aneurysms. Different strategies to remove clots from the subarachnoid space and prevent vasospasms have different outcomes. Intrathecal urokinase infusion therapy combined with endovascular treatment (EVT) can reduce the incidence of symptomatic vasospasms. To analyze the relationship between symptomatic vasospasms and residual SAHs after urokinase infusion therapy, we retrospectively reviewed the records of 348 consecutive patients managed wi

[Fusion imaging of the 3D MR cisternography/angiography for the assessment of the intracranial major cerebral arterial stenosis].

The fusion imaging of the 3D MR cisternography (MRC) and 3D MR angiography (MRA) was applied for the assessment of the major cerebral arterial stenosis. The outer wall configurations of the stenotic lesions of the intracranial major cerebral arteries within a cisternal space were depicted by 3D MRC. Flow-related vascular structures were shown by 3D MRA. Fusion imaging was created by compositing volumetric data of MRC and co-registered MRA by using a workstation with transparent perspective volume-rendering technique. Stenotic lesions of the intracranial cerebral arteries were assessed as a dis

Malformative intracranial cysts: diagnosis and outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal investigations make it possible to follow up malformative intracranial cysts from their detection in utero through th … difficult to prognosticate, retrocerebellar cysts often being difficult to differentiate from mega cisterna magna and Dandy-Walker complex. In our hands, prenatal prognostication was correct in approximately 90% of the cases.

Intracisternal injection of somatostatin receptor 5-preferring agonists induces a vagal cholinergic stimulation of gastric emptying in rats.

We previously showed that the somatostatin receptor 5 (sst(5))-preferring agonist BIM-23052 injected intracisternally (i.c. ; 0.8 nmol/rat) stimulated gastric emptying of a non-nutrient meal in conscious rats. In this study, we investigated the neural pathways and specificity of BIM-23052 action. BIM-23052 (0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 nmol/rat i.c.) stimulated gastric transit; values of gastric emptying were 65.5 +/- 6.5, 77.4 +/- 5.3, and 77.7 +/- 1.9%, respectively, compared with 43.2 +/-3.2% in i.c. saline group. Intravenous injection of BIM-23052 (0.8 nmol/rat) had no effect. BIM-23052 (0.8 nmol/rat

Cisternal CSF levels of cytokines after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Cytokines are considered as mediators of immune and inflammatory responses. Cisternal CSF levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and of the soluble adhesion molecule E-selectin were evaluated in patients operated on for intracranial aneurysms. Cisternal CSF samples were obtained at surgery in 41 selected patients (31 with diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and 10 control patients operated on for incidental unruptured aneurysms); 14 patients were operated within 72 h after SAH (early surgery) and 17 were operated after day 10 after the hemorrhage

CT cisternography in congenital perilymphatic fistula of the inner ear.

Perilymphatic fistulas of the inner ear constitute abnormal leaks of perilymphatic fluid into the middle ear or mastoid air cell system and represent a rare cause of otorrhea. We report the case of a 5-month-old child presenting with sudden otorrhea. High resolution CT cisternography showed a malformation of the middle ear and a passage of contrast-enhanced CSF into the tympanic cavity through the left oval window. Surgery confirmed a tear of the tympanic membrane as well as a stapes malformation with aplasia of the crura and an associated perilymphatic fistula through a defect in the stapes f

Relationship of neurologic status in macaques infected with the simian immunodeficiency virus to cerebrospinal fluid quinolinic acid and kynurenic acid.

Increased concentrations of the excitotoxin quinolinic acid (QUIN) have been implicated in the neurologic deficits and brain atrophy that may accompany infection with the human immunodeficiency virus type-1. Key neuropathologic features of the AIDS encephalitis are replicated in some macaques following infection with the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). In the present studies, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) QUIN concentrations increased within 2 weeks following infection of 11 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) with a neurotropic sooty mangabey isolate of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVsm)

Opioid and non-opioid central cardiovascular effects of ketamine.

The cardiovascular responses to ketamine injected intracisternally were examined in chloralose anaesthetized cats. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at different time intervals after intracisternal injection of drug or saline vehicle. The low doses of ketamine (0.5 or 1.0 mg) elicited dose dependent increase in blood pressure and heart rate. In contrast the high dose of ketamine (4 mg), produced a fall in blood pressure and heart rate. The cardiovascular response elicited by the low dose was naloxone insensitive and completely blocked by haloperidol, but not by dopamine antagonist pi

Analysis of changes in intracranial pressure and pressure-volume index at different locations in the craniospinal axis during supratentorial epidural balloon inflation.

During experimental supratentorial epidural compression of the brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and pressure-volume index (PVI) were measured in the supra- and infratentorial compartments of the craniospinal axis in anesthetized ventilated cats. A transtentorial gradient of CSF pressure developed when CSF pressure in the lateral ventricle exceeded 20 mm Hg at balloon volumes of 0.4 to 1.2 ml. The shapes of both the pressure vs. volume and the pressure gradient vs. volume curves were exponential. PVI in the supratentorial compartment was lowered more rapidly as brain compression advanc

Analysis of cardiovascular effects of morphine in the cat.

In cats anaesthetized with chloralose, the effect of morphine on arterial blood pressure and heart rate was examined by injecting the drug through different routes. When injected into the cerebral ventricles, it acted on structures in the walls of the third ventricle and produced a naloxone resistant tachycardia through a sympathetic discharge to the heart. When injected into the cisterna magna or subcutaneously, it produced a naloxone sensitive long-lasting fall in blood pressure and bradycardia resulting from inhibition of sympathetic tone to blood vessels and heart; increased vagal tone pla…

Effect of methamphetamine on norepinephrine metabolism in various regions of brain.

The effects of methamphetamine on tritiated and endogenous norepinephrine metabolism was examined in various regions of brain. In acute experiments, 30 minutes or 5 hours after methamphetamine i.p., 3H-norepinephrine was injected into the cisterna magna. In chronic experiments, rats were administered increasing doses of methamphetamine twice a day for 17 days, then 18 hours after the last dose of methamphetamine, 3H-norepinephrine was injected intracisternally. All rats were killed 5 minutes after the intracisternal injection and their brains removed, dissected into five parts and assayed for …

Impact of infusion conditions and anesthesia on CSF tracer dynamics in mouse brain.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI has become an invaluable tool for mapping cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and delineating solute tr … Gd-DTPA as a CSF tracer. The effect of infusion rate was assessed by administering Gd-DTPA into the cisterna magna (ICM) at two different rates under isoflurane anesthesia. The influence of anesthesia was evaluated by comparing tracer transport patterns under isoflurane versus ketamine/xylazine and low-dose isoflurane at the slower infusion rate. To examine the …

Intracisternal sauvagine is more potent than corticotropin-releasing factor to decrease gastric vagal efferent activity in rats.

Consecutive intracisternal (ic) injections of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) (21, 63, and 126 pmol, ic) or sauvagine (2.1, 6.3, and 21 pmol, ic) decreased gastric vagal efferent multiunit discharge (GVED) to 82%, 75% and 69% and 71%, 40% and 21%, respectively, from preinjection basal levels (taken as 100%). The inhibitory action was dose related (magnitude and duration of the response, 7-45 min). The CRF antagonist, [D-Phe12,Nle21,38,Calpha-MeLeu37]-rCRF12-4 1 (6.25 nmol, ic) increased GVED by 43.5+/-4.3% and blocked the decrease in GVED induced by CRF (21 pmol, ic) for >90 min with a co
