Neuropsychological functioning in adults with Asperger syndrome.

There is some consensus in the literature regarding the cognitive profile of people with Asperger syndrome (AS). Findings to date suggest that a proportion of people with AS have higher verbal than performance IQ, a non-verbal learning disability (NVLD) and impairments in some aspects of executive function (EF). However, there are few published studies on adults with AS and many have compared the AS group to an autistic control group alone. We compared cognitive functioning in 27 AS adults without a history of language delay and 20 normal controls who did not differ significantly in age, gende

Executive Functions in Alcohol Use Disorder: The Positive Role of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation-Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Executive functioning (EF) consists of basic components (inhibition, working memory [WM] and flexibility) and more complex components that depend on the proper functioning of the basic components. Deficits in EF are common in alcohol use disorder (AUD) and can impact treatment effectiveness and quality of life. This study examined the impact of neuropsychological rehabilitation (NR) on improving these functions. METHOD: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in an AUD treatment unit, with three evaluation points: baseline and after 3 and 6 months. The study compa

The underlying structure of EF in school-aged children with CHD was best understood by a two-factor model where inhibition and working memory represented one construct and cogniti …

Pharmacological or genetic inactivation of the serotonin transporter improves reversal learning in mice.

Growing evidence supports a major contribution of cortical serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) to the modulation of cognitive flexibility and the cognitive inflexibility evident in neuropsychiatric disorders. The precise role of 5-HT and the influence of 5-HT gene variation in mediating this process is not fully understood. Using a touch screen-based operant system, we assessed reversal of a pairwise visual discrimination as an assay for cognitive flexibility. Effects of constitutive genetic or pharmacological inactivation of the 5-HT transporter (5-HTT) on reversal were examined by testing …

[THE EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ON FIBROMYALGIA].

Fibromyalgia syndrome is defined as chronic widespread pain associated with sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and other somatic and psychological symptoms. Psychological symptoms can include mood disorders, anxiety and depression. Physical activity can be considered a safe non-pharmacological tool to alleviate fibromyalgia's physical and psychological symptoms. Physical activity that includes aerobic exercises such as swimming, walking, and dancing, combined with strength training, flexibility training and other mind-body exercises, have been proven to alleviate pain, an

Oscillatory control of cortical space as a computational dimension.

Flexible cognition depends on the ability to represent and apply relevant information to the current task at hand. This allows the brain to interpret sensory input and guide behavior in a context-dependent manner. Recent work has proposed "spatial computing" as a mechanism for this flexibility, suggesting that task-related signals organize information processing through spatial patterns of oscillatory activity across the cortical surface. These patterns are proposed to act as "inhibitory stencils" that constrain where sensory-related information (the "content" of cognition) can be expressed in

Spontaneous Fluctuations in the Flexible Control of Covert Attention.

UNLABELLED: Spontaneous fluctuations in cognitive flexibility are characterized by moment-to-moment changes in the efficacy of control over attentional shifts. We used fMRI to investigate the neural correlates in humans of spontaneous fluctuations in readiness to covertly shift attention between two peripheral rapid serial visual presentation streams. Target detection response time (RT) after a shift or hold of covert spatial attention served as a behavioral index of fluctuations in attentional flexibility. In particular, the cost associated with shifting attention compared with holding attent…

Comparing Tai Chi, Baduanjin, square dance, and Latin dance for cognitive and physical benefits in older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

AIM: This study aimed to compare the effects of four structured exercise interventions-Tai Chi, Baduanjin, square dance, and Latin dance-on cognitive function, physical health, body composition, and psychosocial outcomes in older adults. METHODS: A 12-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with 150 older adults aged 60 to 80 years (mean age: 69.7 ± 5.8 years; 62.7% female). Participants were assigned to one of five groups: Tai Chi, Baduanjin, square dance, Latin dance, or a health education control group. Psychological flexibility and role satisfaction as serial mediators between dispositional mindfulness and postpartum depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a major public health issue impacting women's well-being and infant development. Dispositional mindfulness has been linked to lower severity of postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS), but the mechanisms behind this connection remain unclear. This study examines the serial mediation of psychological flexibility and maternal role satisfaction in the relationship between mindfulness facets and PDS. METHODS: Participants were recruited using convenience sampling and completed an electronic questionnaire assessing sociodemographic background, dispositional mindfu

Explanatory flexibility and explanatory style in treatment-seeking clients with Axis I psychopathology.

Cognitive diathesis stress models of depression emphasize individual styles of attributing causal explanations to negative and positive events in life. The Attributional Style Questionnaire (ASQ) has traditionally been used to measure explanatory style, defined as an individual's habitual way of assigning causes to negative events. Explanatory flexibility, rather than focusing on the content of one's thoughts, emphasizes the extent to which individuals are able to make different attributions depending on the particular context of each event. The underlying notion is that individuals who are be

Proxy-reported quality of life in adolescents and adults with dyskinetic cerebral palsy is associated with executive functions and cortical thickness.

PURPOSE: Quality of life (QOL) is a key outcome for people with cerebral palsy (CP), and executive functioning is an important predictor of QOL in other health-related conditions. Little is known about this association in CP or about its neural substrate. We aim to analyze the influence of executive functioning (including cognitive flexibility) as well as that of other psychological, motor, communication and socioeconomic variables on QOL and to identify neuroanatomical areas related to QOL in adolescents and adults with CP. METHODS: Fifty subjects diagnosed with dyskinetic CP (mean age 25.96…

Functional Connectivity Changes in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Correspond to Interference Control and Obsessions Severity.

Introduction: Deficits in neurocognitive mechanisms such as inhibition control and cognitive flexibility have been suggested to mediate the symptoms in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These mechanisms are proposedly controlled by the "affective" and "executive" orbitofronto-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits with well-documented morphological and functional alterations in OCD that are associated with OCD symptoms. The precuneus region has been suggested in OCD as another key structure associated with the mechanism of "thought-action fusion." Our study aimed to elucidate the associat…

Inhibitory control mediates the effect of high intensity interval exercise on food choice.

Exercise is associated with changes in food consumption and cognitive function. The aim of this study was to examine the immediate effects of acute exercise on appetite, food choices, and cognitive processes, and the mediating role of cognitive functioning, namely inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility and decision making. We compared the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) to a resting condition on appetite and food choices, using visual analogue rating scales and a computerised portion selection task. Mediation analysis was performed with exercise/rest condi…
