Improving Executive Function and its Neurobiological Mechanisms through a Mindfulness-Based Intervention: Advances within the Field of Developmental Neuroscience.

Poor executive function (EF) has been associated with a host of short- and long-term problems across the lifespan, including elevated rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, drug abuse, and antisocial behavior. Mindfulness-based interventions that focus on increasing awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, and actions have been shown to improve specific aspects of EF, including attention, cognitive control, and emotion regulation. In this article, we apply a developmental neuroscience perspective to review research relevant to one specific mindfulness-based intervention,

The Implications of Moral Neuroscience for Brain Disease: Review and Update.

The last 2 decades have seen an explosion of neuroscience research on morality, with significant implications for brain disease. Many studies have proposed a neuromorality based on intuitive sentiments or emotions aimed at maintaining collaborative social groups. These moral emotions are normative, deontological, and action based, with a rapid evaluation of intentionality. The neuromoral circuitry interacts with the basic mechanisms of socioemotional cognition, including social perception, behavioral control, theory of mind, and social emotions such as empathy. Moral transgressions may result

Cerebral correlates of psychotic syndromes in neurodegenerative diseases.

Psychosis has been recognized as a common feature in neurodegenerative diseases and a core feature of dementia that worsens most clinical courses. It includes hallucinations, delusions including paranoia, aggressive behaviour, apathy and other psychotic phenomena that occur in a wide range of degenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, synucleinopathies (Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies), Huntington's disease, frontotemporal degenerations, motoneuron and prion diseases. Many of these psychiatric manifestations may be early expressions of cognitive impairment, but often

Morphine disrupts long-range synchrony of gamma oscillations in hippocampal slices.

Oscillations in neuronal population activity within the gamma frequency band (>25 Hz) have been correlated with cognition: Gamma oscillations could bind together features of a sensory stimulus by generating synchrony between discrete cortical areas [Eckhorn, R., Bauer, R., Jordan, W., Brosch, M., Kruse, W., Munk, M. & Reitboeck, H. J. (1989) Biol. Cybern. 60, 121-130; Singer, W. & Gray, C. M. (1995) Annu. Rev. Neurosci. 18, 555-556]. Herein we demonstrate that morphine and beta-endorphin disrupt this long-range synchrony of gamma oscillations while leaving the synchrony of local oscillations r

Exploring the role of the left DLPFC in fatigue during unresisted rhythmic movements.

Understanding central fatigue during motor activities is important in neuroscience and different medical fields. The central mechanisms of motor fatigue are known in depth for isometric muscle contractions; however, current knowledge about rhythmic movements and central fatigue is rather scarce. In this study, we explored the role of an executive area (left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex [DLPFC]) in fatigue development during rhythmic movement execution, finger tapping (FT) at the maximal rate, and fatigue after effects on the stability of rhythmic patterns. Participants (n = 19) performed six

Effectiveness of two video-based multicomponent treatments for fibromyalgia: The added value of cognitive restructuring and mindfulness in a three-arm randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of two video-based multicomponent programs (FIBROWALK) and the Multicomponent Physiotherapy Program (MPP) for patients with fibromyalgia (FM) compared to treatment-as-usual (TAU) only. We posit that FIBROWALK, due to inclusion of specific psychological ingredients (cognitive restructuring and mindfulness), can produce additional clinical benefits when compared to TAU or MPP alone. METHODS: A total of 330 patients with FM were recruited and randomly allocated (1:1:1) to TAU only, TAU + FIBROWALK, or TAU + MPP. FIBROW

Peripheral cancer attenuates amyloid pathology in Alzheimer's disease via cystatin-c activation of TREM2.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cancer are among the most devastating diseases worldwide. Epidemiological data indicate that the incidence of AD significantly decreases in patients with a history of cancer. However, whether and how peripheral cancer may affect AD progression is yet to be studied. Here, we find that peripheral cancer inhibits amyloid pathology and rescues cognition via secretion of cystatin-c (Cyst-C), which binds amyloid oligomers and activates triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) in microglia, enabling microglia to degrade the pre-existing amyloid plaques in

The role of left anterior temporal lobe in basic linguistic composition: Evidence from stereo-electroencephalography.

Determining the neural bases of basic linguistic composition is central to research on the cognitive neuroscience of language. The left anterior temporal lobe (LATL) is widely reported during linguistic composition of visual stimuli in magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies. However, this effect is less reported during the linguistic composition of auditory stimuli in intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) studies. To further test this discrepancy, we directly examined the composition effect in LATL by combining the iEEG technique with visual stimuli. Participants were asked to read minimal …

Rabbit Maternal Behavior: A Perspective from Behavioral Neuroendocrinology, Animal Production, and Psychobiology.

Rabbit maternal behavior (MB) impacts meat and fur production on the farm, survival of the species in the wild, and pet welfare. Specific characteristics of rabbit MB (i.e., three-step nest building process; single, brief, daily nursing bout) have been used as models for exploring particular themes in neuroscience, like obsessive-compulsive actions, circadian rhythms, and cognition. Particular hormonal combinations regulate nest building by acting on brain regions controlling MB in other mammals. Nonhormonal factors like type of lodging and the doe's social rank influence nursing and milk prod

Neuroscience and education: Cerebral lateralization of networks and oscillations in dyslexia.

Liaison between neuroscience and education has resulted in significant advances in our understanding of the neurobiological learning requirements of individuals with reading disability, the neuroplasticity of the developing brain, and the participation of the right hemisphere in reading. Research in neural network theory and cortical oscillations suggests that the hemispheres collaborate in high-level language processes. The right hemisphere specializes in coding low frequencies of the speech envelope and interhemispheric cognitive control, while the left is specialized for local high frequenc

Transneuronal tracing with neurotropic viruses reveals network macroarchitecture.

A major challenge in systems neuroscience is to unravel the complex matrix of connections that characterize functional circuits within the central nervous system. Retrograde transneuronal transport of rabies virus has proven to be especially useful for this purpose. Here we provide specific examples in which transneuronal transport of rabies virus has been used to unravel multi-synaptic pathways within motor, cognitive and autonomic circuits. Tracing with rabies virus defined: first, the closed-loop organization of cerebellar and basal ganglia circuits with the cerebral cortex; second, the pre

Recent advances in neurobiology of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder with variable phenotypic expression, due to a mutation in one of the two genes, TSC1 and TSC2, and a subsequent hyperactivation of the downstream mTOR pathway, resulting in increased cell growth and proliferation. The central nervous system is consistently involved in TSC, with 90% of individuals affected showing structural abnormalities, and almost all having some degree of CNS clinical manifestations, including seizures, cognitive impairment and behavioural problems. TSC is proving to be a particularly informative model for s

Dyslexia, learning, and pedagogical neuroscience.

The explosion in neuroscientific knowledge has profound implications for education, and we advocate the establishment of the new discipline of 'pedagogical neuroscience' designed to combine psychological, medical, and educational perspectives. We propose that specific learning disabilities provide the crucible in which the discipline may be forged, illustrating the scope by consideration of developmental dyslexia. Current approaches have failed to establish consensus on fundamental issues such as theoretical causes, diagnostic methods, and treatment strategies. We argue that these difficulties

Inflammatory Factors Derived From Metabolic Dysfunction-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Inducers of Anxiety and Spatial Memory Impairment.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has emerged as a global epidemic, with growing evidence suggesting its adverse impact on brain function. However, the underlying mechanisms linking hepatic metabolic dysfunction to neurodegeneration remain unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated the liver-brain axis by integrating genetic epidemiology, experimental neuroscience, and transcriptomics techniques. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis revealed a potential causal relationship between MASLD and cognitive decline. These findings were validated

Association between abnormal brain oscillations and cognitive performance in patients with bipolar disorder: Molecular mechanisms and clinical evidence.

Brain oscillations have gained great attention in neuroscience during recent decades as functional building blocks of cognitive-sensory processes. Research has shown that oscillations in "alpha," "beta," "gamma," "delta," and "theta" frequency windows are highly modified in brain pathology, including in patients with cognitive impairment like bipolar disorder (BD). The study of changes in brain oscillations can provide fundamental knowledge for exploring neurophysiological biomarkers in cognitive impairment. The present article reviews findings from the role and molecular basis of abnormal neu
