Ayurveda for chemo-radiotherapy induced side effects in cancer patients.

Chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy are highly toxic and both damage adjacent healthy cells. Side effects may be acute (occurring within few weeks after therapy), intermediate or late (occurring months or years after the therapy). Some important side effects of chemotherapy are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mucositis, alopecia, constipation etc; whereas radiation therapy though administered locally, can produce systemic side effects such as fatigue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, alteration in the taste, sleep disturbance, headache, anemia, dry skin, constipation etc. Late complications of these t

Functional and Structural Correlates of Impaired Enrichment-Mediated Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis in a Mouse Model of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are associated with a wide range of cognitive deficiencies. OBJECTIVE: We previously found that gestational exposure to moderate levels of alcohol in mice throughout the 1st-2nd human trimester-equivalents for brain development results in profound impairment of the hippocampal neurogenic response to enriched environment (EE) in adulthood, without altering baseline neurogenesis rate under standard housing (SH). However, the functional and structural consequences of impaired EE-mediated neurogenesis in the context of prenatal alcohol exposure

Contributions of Letter-Speech Sound Learning and Visual Print Tuning to Reading Improvement: Evidence from Brain Potential and Dyslexia Training Studies.

We use a neurocognitive perspective to discuss the contribution of learning letter-speech sound (L-SS) associations and visual specialization in the initial phases of reading in dyslexic children. We review findings from associative learning studies on related cognitive skills important for establishing and consolidating L-SS associations. Then we review brain potential studies, including our own, that yielded two markers associated with reading fluency. Here we show that the marker related to visual specialization (N170) predicts word and pseudoword reading fluency in children who received ad

Therapeutics are needed to ameliorate neurobehavioral symptoms of developmental lead poisoning.

Developmental lead poisoning is a global problem and requires a global effort to remedy the environment and its effect on children. Until environmental lead is eliminated, therapeutics should be developed to alleviate symptoms of developmental lead poisoning. Memory and learning require adaptive oligodendrogenesis and neomyelination. Lead poisoning causes memory and learning deficits by targeting oligodendroglia lineage cells as well as other cells of the central nervous system. Though the etiologies of the various diseases and conditions that exhibit memory deficits being considered for treat

Marital relationship and the treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia: a critical review.

The purpose of this paper is (1) to specify, among studies on the links between marital relationship and cognitive-behavioral treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA), the conceptual and methodological limitations that may have produced inconsistent results in this field so far; and (2) to propose avenues of research that will help in remedying current weaknesses and answering important questions in this area. Following definition of PDA and a survey of its socioeconomic consequences, the authors examine results of the various ways research has tried to specify the links between mari

Why is learning to read a hard task for some children?

In this brief review of some of my research on reading disability, I argue that a child's development into literacy has two major ontogenetic roots, one involving early informal literacy socialization and one related to phonological awareness. Although failure in reading acquisition might be a question of cultural deprivation, the dynamic interaction between genetic dispositions and environment must be acknowledged, especially in a society providing rich sources of print exposure. The crucial transition in literacy development involves a step from implicit to explicit control of the phonemic u

Nonverbal learning disabilities and remedial interventions.

Adolescents with nonverbal learning disabilities who enroll in private, special secondary schools consistently present a pattern of behaviors which prevents achievement of their potentials in academic areas and impedes their abilities to interact effectively with others. With weaknesses in the fine graphomotor skills for writing and poor organization at all levels, they produce limited written output and often fail to complete academic assignments. Their response to pressure to produce is to become less productive. These students perceive social situations inaccurately; they are not successful

Lingguizhugan decoction ameliorates cognitive impairment in AD-like mice by influencing the microbiome-gut-brain axis mediated by SCFAs.

BACKGROUND: Lingguizhugan (LGZG) decoction, an ancient Chinese herbal remedy originating from the Eastern Han Dynasty, consists of Poria cocos, Cinnamomi ramulus, Atractylodes macrocephala, and Glycyrrhiza, as described in the Golden Chamber Synopsis. It has a history spanning over 1600 years, in which it has been primarily used for the treatment of inflammation, injuries, and fluid retention; however, the potential of LGZG decoction to ameliorate Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression by modulating the gut-brain axis through attenuation of gut microbiota and their metabolites remains unknown.

Cortical Structure in Pre-Readers at Cognitive Risk for Dyslexia: Baseline Differences and Response to Intervention.

Early childhood is a critical period for structural brain development as well as an important window for the identification and remediation of reading difficulties. Recent research supports the implementation of interventions in at-risk populations as early as kindergarten or first grade, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms following such interventions remain understudied. To address this, we investigated cortical structure by means of anatomical MRI before and after a 12-week tablet-based intervention in: (1) at-risk children receiving phonics-based training (n = 29; n = 16 complete pre-post da

Comparing options for screening of reading difficulties in middle school: Do teacher ratings improve accuracy?

Reading problems may emerge beyond the primary grades when the linguistic and cognitive demands of reading comprehension increase in middle school. The accurate identification of students requiring supplemental reading instruction is critical to provide remediation and decrease the prevalence and likelihood of reading problems in secondary settings and beyond. Nevertheless, research guidance on middle school reading screening is scarce. This study analyzed data from 193 sixth-grade students across 12 classrooms to examine (a) how well various reading screeners predicted proficiency on the year

The effects of chronic alcohol consumption or thiamin deficiency on radial-arm maze performance in the rat.

Experiment 1 tested the hypothesis that chronic consumption of ethanol, in the presence of good nutrition, is associated with impairments in memory. Rats were fed a vitamin-fortified ethanol-Sustagen diet with 35% ethanol-derived calories for 150 days. Two control groups were used. The first was pair fed a Sustagen mix in which sucrose had been substituted for ethanol. The second control group received ad lib access to standard laboratory chow and water. All animals were then placed on the chow and water diet for six weeks prior to testing in an eight-arm radial maze. There was a significant,

Alexithymia and Bipolar Disorder: Virtual Reality Could Be a Useful Tool for the Treatment and Prevention of These Conditions in People with a Physical Comorbidity.

Background: Alexithymia, a predictor in chronic illnesses, like cardiovascular and bipolar disorder (CD-BD), could be improved with a virtual reality (VR) cognitive remediation program. This secondary analysis of a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluates alexithymia improvement and its factors in an experimental group versus a control group, exploring extensions to individuals with comorbid non-psychiatric chronic conditions. Methods: A feasibility cross-over RCT (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05070065) enrolled individuals aged 18-75 with mood disorders (BD, DSM-IV), excluding those with…

Emotions in play: young people's and clinicians' experience of 'Thinking about Emotions' group.

PURPOSE: Emotional difficulties in young people (YP) with anorexia nervosa (AN) are well recognised. Improved strategies are needed to support inpatients to tolerate group therapy and to help them to better identify and manage their emotions. Cognitive Remediation and Emotion Skills Training (CREST) for AN adults, aimed at improving emotional processing skills, has been found beneficial in adult AN groups. A case series of CREST was conducted in an inpatient ward for YP (CREST-YP) to evaluate its suitability for a younger population. METHODS: A mixed-methods assessment was used. Thirty-two YP…

Continuous performance test impairment in a 22q11.2 microdeletion mouse model: improvement by amphetamine.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) confers high risk of neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. These disorders are associated with attentional impairment, the remediation of which is important for successful therapeutic intervention. We assessed a 22q11.2DS mouse model (Df(h22q11)/+) on a touchscreen rodent continuous performance test (rCPT) of attention and executive function that is analogous to human CPT procedures. Relative to wild-type littermates, Df(h22q11)/+ male mice showed impaired attentional performance as shown by de

Participation in Social Skills Therapy is Associated With Enhanced Recall Memory by Children With Down Syndrome: An Exploratory Study.

Participation in social skills therapy (SST) facilitates cognitive functioning in children with developmental disabilities. The present pilot study examined whether participation in SST was associated with enhanced encoding and 1-month delayed recall in children with Down syndrome (DS). Children were presented with novel three-step event sequences in an elicited imitation procedure. Immediate imitation was permitted as an index of encoding; long-term memory was assessed 1 month later. Parents completed questionnaires inquiring about children's participation in SST. Participation in SST was ass

Effects of bottom-up and top-down intervention principles in emergent literacy in children at risk of developmental dyslexia: a longitudinal study.

This longitudinal study focused on the effects of two different principles of intervention in children at risk of developing dyslexia from 5 to 8 years old. The children were selected on the basis of a background questionnaire given to parents and preschool teachers, with cognitive and functional magnetic resonance imaging results substantiating group differences in neuropsychological processes associated with phonology, orthography, and phoneme-grapheme correspondence (i.e., alphabetic principle). The two principles of intervention were bottom-up (BU), "from sound to meaning", and top-down (T

Foundational Number Sense Training Gains Are Predicted by Hippocampal-Parietal Circuits.

The development of mathematical skills in early childhood relies on number sense, the foundational ability to discriminate among quantities. Number sense in early childhood is predictive of academic and professional success, and deficits in number sense are thought to underlie lifelong impairments in mathematical abilities. Despite its importance, the brain circuit mechanisms that support number sense learning remain poorly understood. Here, we designed a theoretically motivated training program to determine brain circuit mechanisms underlying foundational number sense learning in female and m
