PURPOSE: Collagen cross-linking (CXL) is a safe and effective procedure to stop progression of keratoconus. However, corneas with a maxK of more than 55 to 58 diopters (D) have been suggested to have an increased failure rate. We report results of CXL for progressive keratoconus in corneas with a maxK of 55 D or more.

This work shows a retrospective evaluation of the patients with progressive keratoconus, stadium I, II, III, to which corneal collagen cross-linking was performed to stop the evolution. The patients were monitored by refraction, visual acuity, keratometry, pachimetry and topography. In all cases it was noticed an improvement or the maintenance of the followed parameters.

Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is a quite rare complication of gynecological surgery. The first attempt to repair the fistulous tract offers the best opportunity for cure. We report the successful repair of VVF in 2 patients using a combined anterior vaginal approach and porcine dermal collagen grafting as interposition tissue. Favorable results confirm technical simplicity, safety and efficacy of this procedure.

The authors review the case of a fifty-three-year-old cirrhotic patient. He was admitted to the emergency unit with symptoms of acute abdomen and haemorrhagic shock. Abdominal bleeding of unknown origin was revealed by UH and CT imaging. After circulatory resuscitation, urgent abdominal exploration was indicated. During operation arterial bleeding of a ruptured cirrhotic nodulus was found. Tacho-Comb (a human fibrinogen/thrombin coated collagen patch) was applied onto the hepatic wound. Prompt haemostasis was achieved. The patient was discharged after an uneventful postoperative period.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a difference in collagen metabolism between comparable urinary stress-incontinent and -continent women.
METHODS: Fibroblast cultures from skin biopsies were established from seven stress-incontinent and four continent women. Collagen production was investigated in these cultures between passages 3 and 7 by incubation with 3H-proline, followed by quantitation of 3H-proline and 3H-hydroxyproline after hydrolysis of proteins and separation by high-pressure liquid chromatography.
