People in prison have multiple complex health and social care needs. These are likely to be the result of a combination of overlapping, and sometimes interlinked, risk factors for infection, ill-health, and incarceration, such as problem drug use. Incarceration can represent a unique opportunity to make high-quality health care available to people in prison and to target socially deprived groups who are often medically underserved when living in the community they originate from. In recent years, international and European institutions have increasingly acknowledged the importance of treating

OBJECTIVE: To understand the changing trends of immune-related diseases. Disease patterns from both pre-and post-immunization plan and after the immunization program were described, in order to provide evidence for the formulation and revision of immunization program and policy, in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
METHODS: According to the time order descriptive method was used to analyze and compare the reported data on infectious diseases in Ningxia, between 1958 and 2014.
RESULTS: From 1958 to 2014, both incidence and mortality of infectious diseases and four diseases related to the immuniz

We have purposely expanded on the well-known ATLS paradigm to aid EHCPs in their approach to a potential bioterrorism event. By building on a process that is already familiar, we hope this will aid the EHCP to remember a systematic approach to such an incident. By following this ten-step process, we believe that all EHCPs, and especially those practicing at the first echelons of care in urgent care clinics and EDs, can approach the daunting problem of biological defense with a good deal more confidence. This same model advocated for bioterrorism also may apply to natural infectious disease epi

In the South West Pacific region, the striking geographical correlation between the frequency of alpha+-thalassemia and the endemicity of Plasmodium falciparum suggests that this hemoglobinopathy provides a selective advantage against malaria. In Vanuatu, paradoxically, alpha+-thalassemia increases the incidence of contracting mild malaria in the first 2 years of life, but severe disease was too uncommon to assess adequately. Therefore, we undertook a prospective case-control study of children with severe malaria on the north coast of Papua New Guinea, where malaria transmission is intense and

Integrating the management and care of communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), and non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes mellitus (DM), may help to achieve the ambitious health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3.3 and 3.4) by 2030. There are five important reasons to integrate. First, we need to integrate to prevent disease. In sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, HIV infection is the main driver of the TB epidemic, and antiretroviral therapy combined with isoniazid preve

Pantoea agglomerans, a gammaproteobacterium of plant origin, possesses many beneficial traits that could be used for the prevention and/or treatment of human and animal diseases, combating plant pathogens, promotion of plant growth and bioremediation of the environment. It produces a number of antibiotics (herbicolin, pantocins, microcin, agglomerins, andrimid, phenazine, among others) which could be used for combating plant, animal and human pathogens or for food preservation. Japanese researchers have demonstrated that the low-molecular-mass lipopolysaccharide of P. agglomerans isolated by t

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effect of the black film covering combined with niclosamide on Oncomelania hupensis snail control in marshland and lake regions.
METHODS: A ditch with snails in Anxiang County was selected as the experimental sites. The ditch was divided into 3 groups: a film group, a niclosamide group, and a niclosamide and film group. The snails were surveyed before the test and 1, 3, 5, 7 days after the experiment.
RESULTS: After the film covering, the highest temperature of the surface of soil was 63.7 degrees C on the first day, and the temperature higher than 40 de

Human disease and health issues are globally significant and closely related to environmental and social factors. However, the interaction effects of such factors on diseases are unclear, which has resulted in a lack of targeted prevention strategies. By taking infectious diseases in China as an example, this study uses an interpretable machine learning method to analyze the impact of environmental and social factors on disease, including industrial SO2 emissions, sanitary toilet coverage rate, and sunshine duration. The modeling results confirm the existence of a nonlinear relationship betwee

Several human adenoviral (Ad) vectors have been developed for vaccine delivery owing to their numerous advantages, including the feasibility of different vector designs, the robustness of elicited immune responses, safety, and scalability. To expand the repertoire of Ad vectors for receptor usage and circumvention of Ad vector immunity, the use of less prevalent human Ad types or nonhuman Ads were explored for vector design. Notably, many nonhuman Ad vectors have shown great promise in preclinical and clinical studies as vectors for vaccine delivery. This review describes the key features of s

BACKGROUND: Half of the estimated annual 28 million non-communicable diseases (NCDs) deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are attributed to weak health systems. Current health policy responses to NCDs are fragmented and vertical particularly in the African region. The World Health Organization (WHO) led NCDs Global action plan 2013-2020 has been recommended for reducing the NCD burden but it is unclear whether Africa is on track in its implementation. This paper synthesizes Africa's progress towards WHO policy recommendations for reducing the NCD burden.
METHODS: Data from the W

Since the 1950s, medical communities have been facing with emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, and emerging pathogens are now considered to be a major microbiologic public health threat. In this review, we focus on bacterial emerging diseases and explore factors involved in their emergence as well as future challenges. We identified 26 major emerging and reemerging infectious diseases of bacterial origin; most of them originated either from an animal and are considered to be zoonoses or from water sources. Major contributing factors in the emergence of these bacterial infections are:

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this survey was to describe the evolution of economic evaluation studies on vaccines available in Spain.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the economic evaluations published by Spanish researchers in major bibliographic databases available online from 1990 to 2012. For all references identified, we limited them to full economic evaluation carried out in Spanish vaccine programs. The following variables were analyzed: type of study, year of publication, vaccine evaluated, the herd immunity and the main methodological aspects proposed by international guid

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Due to their different virulence and infectivity, both severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and H1N1 09 revealed different strengths and weaknesses in our ability to contain new viral threats over the past decade. This review focuses on recent literature around attempts to contain the impact of these two viral epidemics that have refined our approach for the future.
RECENT FINDINGS: Attempts to contain emerging epidemics at the site of origin have so far failed, in part due to resourcing of surveillance. H1N1 09 revealed major problems with rigid pandemic planning a

BACKGROUND: It is presumed that medical students are travelers who can take care of their health, and thus the present study was conducted to elicit the attitude and practice [AP] of medical students from two different countries toward travel health issues.
OBJECTIVES: To elicit the attitude and practice of medical students from two different countries toward travel health issues and identify the reasons for any variations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An anonymous pre-tested structured questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic details, travel aspects, travel health issues, and precautions [med

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a so-called neglected tropical disease, currently overshadowed by higher-profile efforts to address malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Despite recent successes in arresting transmission, some 40 million people who already have the disease have been largely neglected. This study aims to increase understanding of how this vulnerable, neglected group can be helped.
METHODS: We used purposive sampling to select 60 men and women with filarial lymphoedema (45 with filarial elephantiasis and 15 men with filarial hydrocoele) from the south of Sri Lanka in 20
