Previous work suggested that domestic animals could act as a reservoir of epidemic typhus. To test this hypothesis, sera from buffaloes, camels, donkeys, goats, pigs and sheep in different parts of Egypt were submitted to the complement-fixation test, using the common soluble typhus antigen. The highest percentage of positive results was obtained with camel and donkey sera and the positivity rate was higher towards the end of the year than in June and July. Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from cloacal swab pools from ducks in processing plants, and from cloacal and conjunctival swab pools from ducks on farms, in a small proportion of the samples examined. The rate equation correlating kinetic data for immune-mediated clearance of RBC in guinea pigs was extended to human studies. Rate constants were evaluated for clearance of IgG, IgM, and cold agglutinin-sensitized RBC in normal human volunteers as well as for clearance of IgM-sensitized cells from a small group of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. By performing genotyping, a laboratory contamination involving Q fever was traced back to the antigen preparation used in a commercially available complement fixation test. It was established that such antigen preparations contain relatively high loads of DNA/RNA, making them potential sources of contamination but also convenient preparations for control material.

In September 2002, facsimiles were sent to 360 primary-care physicians alerting them to a local outbreak of Q fever. The physicians subsequently submitted serology samples on significantly more patients than in a previously comparable period in 2001. Human IgG possesses four main subclasses, namely IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4, of these IgG1-IgG3 fix complement, but IgG4 does not. We have studied the IgG subclasses of intercellular antibodies in the sera from 20 patients with Brazilian pemphigus foliaceus by immunofluorescent staining using mouse monoclonal antibodies against human IgG1-IgG4.
