Creativity, personality, and hoarding behavior.

Compulsive hoarding is a debilitating illness that is characterized by excessive collection of and failure to discard items, irrespective of their uselessness or hazardousness. Anecdotal evidence suggests that individuals who hoard may be more creative than individuals without hoarding behavior; however, this hypothesis has never been tested empirically. In the present study, we examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and performance on a series of creativity measures. We also explored the extent to which hoarding symptoms were associated with factors such as personality, impulsivi

Schizotypal and obsessive-compulsive traits: Co-occurrence rate and relationship with executive function, emotion experience, and emotion expressivity in college students.

Empirical findings suggest that there is an overlap between schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These disorders also have a high comorbidity rate. However, little is known about the impact of co-occurring schizotypal and obsessive-compulsive traits on executive function, emotion experience, and emotion expressivity in the normal population. The present study examined the prevalence of coexisting schizotypal and obsessive-compulsive traits and the relationship between these two traits in a sample of healthy college students. We also conducted a moderation analysis to explore

The Concept of "Hypersexuality" in the Boundary between Physiological and Pathological Sexuality.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of hypersexuality belongs to modern parlance, according to a predominantly clinical meaning, and is understood as a psychological and behavioural alteration as a result of which sexually motivated stimuli are sought in inappropriate ways and often experienced in a way that is not completely satisfactory. METHODS: Literature up to February 2023 was reviewed, with 25 searches selected. RESULTS: Forty-two articles were included in the review. CONCLUSION: Hypersexuality is a potentially clinically relevant condition consisting of one or more dysfunctional and pathologi

Factor structure, validity, and reliability of a Persian version of the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale.

This study examined the psychometric properties of a Persian translation of the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale. A total of 393 university students from Iran completed the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale, along with measures of depression, self-esteem, affect, body appreciation, physical self-perceptions, personality, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the four-factor structure had adequate fit. Further analyses indicated that the Body and Appearance Self-conscious Emotions Scale scores ev

Adolescent Compulsive Sexual Behavior: Is It a Unique Psychological Phenomenon?

Adolescent compulsive sexual behavior (CSB), and its associations with other personality predispositions (attachment orientations, temperament), gender, religiosity, and psychopathological tendencies, is the subject of this study. Five alternative empirical models were examined, all based on current theory and research on CSB. The sample included 310 high-school adolescents (183 boys, 127 girls), ranging in age from 16 to 18 years (M = 16.94, SD = .65) and enrolled in the 11th (43.4%) and 12th (56.6%) grades, who completed self-report measures tapping CSB and the above mentioned variables. Psychiatric comorbidity in anorexia and bulimia nervosa: nature, prevalence, and causal relationships.

Eating disorders are complex, multifactorially determined phenomena. When individuals with eating disorders present for treatment with comorbid conditions, case conceptualization is further complicated and, as a result, it may be difficult to determine optimal psychological or pharmacological treatment. This article reviews the evidence of the association between eating disorders (anorexia nervosa [AN] and bulimia nervosa [BN]) and Axis I depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance abuse, and Axis II personality disorders, for the purposes of increasing awareness about the diffe

Polyembolokoilamania with obsessive compulsive and related disorders: A case series.

Polyembolokoilamania is a condition seen in a medical or surgical emergencies where the person, sometimes repetitively, inserts various foreign bodies through body orifices or skin to obtain gratification often associated with background psychiatric diagnoses. We present three cases where one patient with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) presented with urethral polyembolokoilamania, one with Excoriation disorder presented with multiple pin-piercing behavior through the skin and one case of OCD presented with anal polyembolokoilamania. Open-label trial of anterior limb of internal capsule-nucleus accumbens deep brain stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder: insights gained.

BACKGROUND: For more than 15 years, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has served as a last-resort treatment for severe treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: From 2010 to 2016, 20 patients with OCD (10 men/10 women) were included in a single-centre trial with a naturalistic open-label design over 1 year to evaluate the effects of DBS in the anterior limb of the internal capsule and nucleus accumbens region (ALIC-NAcc) on OCD symptoms, executive functions, and personality traits. RESULTS: ALIC-NAcc-DBS significantly decreased OCD symptoms (mean Yale-Brown Obsessive Compu

Complex partial status epilepticus presenting as gelastic seizures: a case report.

A middle-aged man, who presented to the emergency room because of bizarre outbursts of laughter, was found to be in partial complex status epilepticus. His seizure disorder had been misdiagnosed, at various times, as a variety of "functional" psychiatric disorders. Despite proper diagnosis and aggressive treatment, management was difficult, being complicated by postictal agitation and confusion, postictal psychosis, and interictal compulsive and paranoid personality features. This case is described, and issues of diagnosis and management in partial complex epilepsy are briefly discussed. The i

Effects of axis I and II comorbidity on behavior therapy outcome for obsessive-compulsive disorder and agoraphobia.

The impact of concurrent axis I diagnoses and axis II traits on the efficacy of a 22-session exposure-based treatment program for 43 outpatients with panic disorder and agoraphobia (PDA) and 63 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was examined. Trained interviewers used the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) to assess axis I diagnoses and the SCID-II to identify the number of axis II criteria met for anxious, dramatic, and odd clusters. Among axis I diagnoses, secondary major depressive disorder (MDD), dysthymia, social phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) were pr

Habitual Routines and Automatic Tendencies Differential Roles in Alcohol Misuse Among Undergraduates.

There is a debate over whether actions that resist devaluation (i.e., compulsive alcohol consumption) are primarily habit- or goal-directed. The incentive habit account of compulsive actions has received support from behavioral paradigms and brain imaging. In addition, the self-reported Creature of Habit Scale (COHS) has been proposed to capture inter-individual differences in habitual tendencies. It is subdivided into two dimensions: routine and automaticity. We first considered a French version of this questionnaire for validation, based on a sample of 386 undergraduates. The relationship be

Predictors for switch from unipolar major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder type I or II: a 5-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: In this naturalistic study, we investigated the rate, time course, and predictors of a diagnostic switch from unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder type I or II during a 5-year follow-up. METHOD: The Vantaa Depression Study included at baseline 269 psychiatric outpatients (82.9%) and inpatients (17.1%) with DSM-IV MDD, diagnosed using structured and semi-structured interviews and followed up at 6 months, 18 months, and 5 years between February 1, 1997 and April 30, 2004. Information on 248 MDD patients (92.2%) was available for analyses of the risk of diagnos

Diagnostic progression to schizophrenia in 35,255 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a longitudinal follow-up study.

Evidence suggests a continuity between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia. However, the factors that may predict diagnostic progression from OCD to schizophrenia remain unclear. A total of 35,255 adolescents and adults with OCD (ICD-9-CM code: 300.3) were enrolled between 2001 and 2010 and followed up at the end of 2011 for the identification of de novo schizophrenia (ICD-9-CM code: 295). The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate incidence rates, and the Cox regression was used to determine the significance of candidate predictors. At the end of the 11-year follow-up peri

A Brief Measure of Worry Severity (BMWS): personality and clinical correlates of severe worriers.

This report describes the development of a brief and valid self-report measure to assess severe and dysfunctional worry (the Brief Measure of Worry Severity or BMWS). Using three independent subject groups (clinical and non-clinical), the measure was used to examine the differential severity of worry in depression and anxiety and to examine the clinical and personality correlates of severe worriers. Preliminary psychometric evaluation revealed that the BMWS possesses good construct and clinical discriminant validity. Subjects reporting greater worry severity tended to be more "introverted" and

Advances in diagnosis and treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

This paper reviews four areas of research into anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). First, in terms of diagnosis, the psychological concerns about weight and shape are now addressed in BN, bringing it more in line with the related disorder, anorexia nervosa. Second, studies of psychiatric comorbidity confirm the overlap between eating disorders and depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse, and personality disorder. Nevertheless, there are reasons to accept the distinct qualities of each syndrome, and eating disorders are not merely a variant of these other conditio

Alexithymic and autistic traits differentially predict personality disorder dimensions.

Alexithymia and autism are variably characterized by social cognitive and perceptual deficits, which can lead to profound social interaction difficulties. Such difficulties are also the hallmark of personality disorders (PDs), but the potential link between alexithymia, autism, and PDs remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether autistic and/or alexithymic traits are associated with specific PD dimensions as measured by the Assessment of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) Personality Disorders Questionnaire (ADP-IV). We included individuals with a
